When was Norway invaded? The closest I can think of were the Scottish mercenaries (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Kringen) who were defeated in ambush by a local peasant militia in 1612. The Scottish mercenaries were on their way to enlist for, wait for it, Sweden.

The claim in the OP is made with the widest possible definition of invasion, and I believe it refers to the actions taking place in WW2 and possibly the Napoleonic war.

I didn't make the list, stole it from a Swedish newspaper who stole it from some book published in the UK... But from the reception of the book, it seems legit and well researched.

With Norway I would guess WW2...

To everyone else: NO I will never make any excuses for bedding people who wants to be bedded. But please do note that that is a far cry from trying to trash marriages or whatever else I have been accused of. I am like a damn token machine, insert some love and attention and you will be bedded (if you have some looks and character).

Token machines are however not known for running around chasing people. And yes, that is just how shallow and meaningless most vacation sex is, before anyone thinks I act all high and almighty.

I have been happily engaged the past few years, and would like to be so again. But if I am tossed a freebie once in a while...

Not that surprising, really. After a long period of being a very minor power for most of the period of British expansion, they picked the right side in the Napoleonic Wars (strange given Bernadotte's loyalties as a French Marshal prior to being given the throne) and they didn't have enough useful resources to really form a tempting target for the British. Combine that with neutrality for most of the 20th century and it makes sense that the British just never saw a purpose in it.

Im already listening to Sabaton, whose most recent album, Carolus Rex, is pretty much all in Swedish, so Im trying to match up the lyrics with the sung words.

The Vikings didn't shy from Spanish girls mate.

I honestly question the logic behind learning a new language to understand a metal group though?

But if you talk about songs like:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_wSBIaeHJ6w&feature=related

Then I am sorry, manliness like that can't be translated without drawing dicks to the extent where you cant comprehend the original letters anyway.

Hooahguy

I will agree with you that songs like that with incredible manliness are hard to translate, but still, it would be awesome to actually understand what they are saying.

11-06-2012, 03:20
Well, they have an English version of the exact same song... I guess the band itself did its best to translate it for you.

But then it is a bit like translating doggish into cattish...

EDIT: Translating lyrics are actually next to impossible, as good lyrics exist more of connotations than anything else. And eventhough you can translate the actual words, you cant translate the connotations of the words.

As an example, one of the sentences in this song refers to a well known Swedish poem from the 17th century or so. You can translate the sentence, but you can never translate the feel that sentence gives someone being grown up with the poem.

I honestly don't believe good lyrics can be translated:

San Quentin, you've been livin' hell to me
You've hosted me since nineteen sixty three
I've seen 'em come and go and I've seen them die
And long ago I stopped askin' why

St. Quentin, du har varit ett levande helvete för mig.
Jag har varit inneboende hos dig sen nittånhundrasextiotre.
Jag har sett dem komma, och jag har sett dem dött.
Och det var var längesen jag slutade fråga varför.

I have no problems translating the song... But can I translate Johnny Cash? **** NO!!

The claim in the OP is made with the widest possible definition of invasion, and I believe it refers to the actions taking place in WW2 and possibly the Napoleonic war.

In the officer programs, I was taught that an invasion technically is 10+ guys, in uniform, on service, crossing a boarder without being welcomed. I also got taught that the number 10 was based on a normal honor guard for dignitaries.

Anyway, you might find it somewhat humorous that I actually lead the last Swedish invasion of Norway. Many a history book has it down to being some stupid Swedish king, but nah, it was me.

Long story short, I lead a combat group (if I remember it right 2 squads with specialists from 4 squads) in our northern arctic mountain regions, a HELL of a hard simulation btw. Anyway, sneaky bastard as I am, I took a detour to outflank the opposition. However, weather hit us HARD with storm winds and -40 degrees, so we sought shelter digging down in the snow.

I was gently awakened by one of my troopers rappidly poking me with his gun, informing me someone would like to have a word. Dug my way out to find my 4 lookouts playing the happy trigger game with Jegerkompaniet guys.

The boarders up there are rather sketchy at best, but we had obviously crossed it. They had been out on a simultaneous training thingy, and had observed us.

We all just had a laugh though, and exchanged rations and souvenirs :)

STILL, I am technically responsible for having invaded Norway :)

My platoon also invaded Sweden.

Old news, happens every year. Mostly because of excercises between Bardu and Finnmark.

And yes, the widest possible definition of invasion is the uninvited border crossing of a military ground unit, that was what I was referring to.

While I agree with Kadagar that good lyrics takes quite a bit of experience to fully get, it helps with exposure.

In general, watching programs in Swedish with English subtitles would probably be best for general exposure. Not the easiest to get though, a few movies I guess. Swedish texts for English programs should be quite easy to find (we subtext everything), but you'll get quite a bit of accent. We have long vovels that's a bit rare.
At least some parts of the US it shouldn't be so hard to find people interested in Swedish that can help. You're at a university correct?

Grammar and word order shouldn't be to hard to catch up on, it's mostly the same.

Overkill is of course an exchange student, but you'll learn a lot if you want to. That said, you have to want to, you can live perfectly fine with only English in Sweden.

Song translations is really hard. Rythm and rhyme are essential and you still need to translate the meaning of the text.

Edit: We lose out on the list if you include Russia. The others have never invaded Sweden.

I'm guessing here, but:

For Brazil and Peru I'm thinking minor actions during colonial times. For Georgia and Armenia I'm guessing at either the wars against Russia or ww1.

Sweden is a bit iffy if you get into technicalities.

They were at war with Britain from 1810 to 1812. But British ships were stationed at Hanö.

This was officially allowed but if British sailors went into town, could that not be considered an invasion in the broadest possible terms? But then again if a British sailor got to town he was likely deserting anyway.

No, they have to cross uninvited in their capacity as a military force.

For example, when our supply trucks took the shortcut through Sweden to get to an excercise in Finnmark, that counted as an invasion. When we were on leave and crossed the border looking for cheap alcohol and cheaper women, it did not count.

But I would hazard a guess that the count in question here only counts instances where the force is also looking to do some killin' and such... Especially when considering how rubbish British military drivers are at navigating and driving in general. I'm quite sure they've got lost and crossed the swedish border several times during excercises in Norway.

I cant find anything about Georgia per say but after they declared independence from Russia after the first world war they were under British protection for 2 years (1918-1920) so maybe that counts

Actions by British privateers were also counted. And I'm sure the British have attacked Spanish harbours and ports in Peru and perhaps Portugese or Dutch in Brazil.
