Word - it also shows our ancestors weren't joking when they were talking about sea-monsters.

Kinda makes you wonder about the Dragons.

I remember watching a documentary about dragons and how they are real. Turns out it was fake. I was pretty disappointed, even though I knew it was fake while watching it.

The one where they were discussing how they might have had a flammable gas (like methane) stored inside them?

Yeah. And they said that it was ignited by using minute amounts of platinum acting as a catalyst in their mouth. It was at that point I knew it was definitely fake. It is not activated in any way, so it would spark a reaction. And a catalyst helps a reaction along, it does not start a reaction. Duh.

EDIT: After some thinking, here's more proof it was fake. Dragons are believed to be carnivourous. Which means they are not ruminants. Which means they will not be making methane in huge quantities, or any at all for that matter.

Well I did not ponder upon the hows and whys of it a lot, all I remember thinking was that if they were real dragon-husbandry would be all a rage these days, considering the growing prices of fossil fuels.

To be picky, it lowers the required activation energy or increases the probabillity for a specific reaction to occur. I don't know about this case, but it's possible for a catalyst to start a reaction at room temperature that would start at a much higher temperature normally.

Although biologically, it's probably easier with 2 chemicals igniting when mixed to create dragon fire, rather than a catalyst.

It's not like people fairly commonly finds fossiles of giant creatures that resembles reptiles is it?

There. I need to revise my chemistry. I've been in the biomedical industry for too long... I'll probably revise it later.

Also, I'm pretty sure that when methane comes in contact with platinum, it does not ignite immediately.

Yeah, I checked on the net, methane should still be stable in room temperature with contact to platinum. Hydrogen starts to burn though, so the principle works.

I remember a time when people thought giant squids were a myth.
Actually, we still haven't seen a squid large enough to bring down a ship. But still the giant squids discovered in modern times are what people didn't expect just a decade ago.

They like to abduct maidens alive.
