I recently bought Medieval Total War gold Edition and installed it on my desktop. I have had no problems running it even though I have a Windows 7 machine. My question though is, how do folks think MTW would play on a netbook. I can install it from the desktop's disk drive via the shared network, but I am wondering about a few things. First, while I know that the netbook's system can handle it (the video card, memory, processor speed are all up to specs for the game), do you think there would be problems with screen resolution? Second, even if there is no problem with screen resolution do you think the screen would be too small to make out the action on the battle screen? Has anyone tried playing MTW on something so small as a netbook?

I came up with a solution myself. I can get an external DVD drive for about $10 to $20. The next question is, are gaming DVDs set to regions like movie DVDs? The desktop is set region 2 so we can watch British movies (since the TV's DVD player only plays region 1). My DVD is from Sega Europe so if games are set by regions it would be region 2. Would I be able to use an American external DVD drive with the MTW Gold DVD?

So that solves the game checking for the DVD. I still need to know about the screen resolution and such though.

Hello, Wodening, and welcome to the Org!

I don't believe there is any region restriction on game DVDs, You can easily install the game by just copying a fresh install from your desktop (either over the network or on a thumbdrive). Just take the whole Medieval - Total War directory, this is the best way to copy the game for installing mods and works for fresh machines as well. But you will need the drive for the disk check.

Whether the game works after the install will depend on the netbook, there are some known issues with certain video cards. The resolution shouldn't be an issue, the game can run on a pretty wide range (I think it's 800x600 to 1600x1200), as long as the unit cards are distinguishable it should be playable. Pointer control might be a little difficult, will you have a mouse or are you stuck with a touchpad or nipple?

I will be using a touchpad. That was something I got to thinking about too. The touchpad on the netbook sometimes clicks on it own (it thinks you tapped when you were just moving the pointer) which could be a bad thing in a battle. I searched the forums to see if anyone reported any problems with my video card, and could not find where anyone had reported any issues. I am thinking what I am going to do is order a cheap DVD drive and use it for installing. Too the game will hopefully check the external drive for the DVD. I figure if all else fails and it does not work on the netbook, all I am out is the money for the DVD drive (which I really need anyway). I do hope it works though as there are times my brother is on the desktop and I could be playing on the netbook. Thanks for responding.
