If, for the reasons elucidated or alluded to in my analyses, if we can discount Makrell, and then Visor, and then WE + BSmith - all at least for this round - then the only logical alternative is to vote either Riedquat or Chaotix.

Riedquat is perhaps a little less evident in the team-scenarios on this basis, but Riedquat is also inherently more dangerous if scum, and anyway it's the best shot we have for a unified front.

This is the ultimate gamble - we're going straight for the deadliest scenario(s).

It really is the biggest gamble possible here - if it pays off, the Mafia are more likely than not doomed. If it doesn't, well, in that case it was probably a scenario with Chaotix as the richest scum, and in that case I die at least a little more easily.

There is about an 8% chance of none of Auto, Chaotix, and Riedquat being scum. There is a 6.25% chance of all three being scum.

However, if we recall that WE + BSmith, or even WE alone OR BSmith alone, is sketchy.

If the other 4 players don't participate soon, I'm going to freak out. We don't yet have enough chips to lock in a vote; we need one more townie. Furthermore, if the scum sit this out entirely, we will never know what hit us, as one of two things could be the case:

1. Riedquat is the wrong guy and the Mafia just lurk for one more day as we mislynch.
2. Riedquat is the right guy and the Mafia don't want to plump openly for him, lest they galvanize the remaining two townies into action. So, here the best strategy would be to hope no one else joins the wagon, and then pounce at the very round-end with the full weight of their chips to lynch a townie and thus win the game.

Either way, I'm biting my nails. We have 18 hours and 45 minutes to decide this...

I've run through so many scenarios, but I can't calculate probability beyond the bare combinations.

Could be Chaotix-BSmith-WE playing us, snickering from the shadows.

Could be Auto-Riedquat-X, with X primed to bust in with seconds to spare.

Could be Visor planning to modify his wager at the last minute - and after all, if he is scum and Riedquat is not, then saving just one chip keeps him alive through the mislynch and into the endgame. And if he is partners with Riedquat after all, then dropping entirely would do the trick.

I've analyzed all the possibilities, but my failure has been my inability to infer the absolutely correct one. :shame:

Ah well, at least I tried. Ultimately, I couldn't even mobilize the entire town (unless it's Chaotix-BSmith-WE) - and even if I knew exactly what to do, it's not like I could have done the actual work of lynching scum singlehandedly.

Round Five



The stakes were high. This was the make-or-break round. What was strange was that Chaotix, BSmith, and White_Eyes:D all decided to fold before things really got going, making it difficult for them to contribute to a gambler win.

This didn't stop the determined gamblers, who were starting to become very experienced with card counting. Reidquat placed the largest bet, and stacked a devastating 70 chips in the pot. He was betting it all that he would win this hand, because if he did not, he lost everything.

Some murmurs suggested that perhaps, Reidquat was placing that bet because he knew his wiseguy partner was going to take the fall for him, and make him look great, on this clutch, perhaps final hand. Autolycus also stacked up his wager, on top of Reidquat's, planning to force the hidden gangsters to throw each other under the bus. Auto was betting heavily that Reidquat wins the game for the gamblers.

Montmorency, however, had gone into deep analysis. After counting all the cards, he determined that he had the winning hand. But his chips were not enough to counter Reidquat and Autolycus, so he took out a quick loan from Visorslash and Makrell, and triumphantly stacked their chips on top of his.

One of the wiseguys whispered to Don Pizzaguy, who had also been dealt into the hand, if that strategy was legal.

"Legal? Who cares? Do I look like the Attorney General? Let them play out the hand, you big wuss."

Finally, it came time to reveal the cards.

Reidquat flipped his hand over. He had a straight, running from Queen to Eights. A solid hand, and it make the other poker players at the table grimace. Had they all wasted their chips?

Montmorency, on the other hand, flipped over his cards. He had a full house, with Sixes over Sevens. A truly crushing hand. Don Pizzaguy sat in silence.

After several moments, he flipped over his hole cards.

Ace.

Ace.

Ace.

With an Ace already showing.

Reidquat stood up and accused Don Pizzaguy of cheating. So did Montmorency.

"Fellas, fellas. You were counting cards. I told you not to do that. And you weren't doing it very well, might I add. Now, let me ask you a question... who were the gangsters that I hired to make you lose?"

Reidquat pointed at Chaotix, who was sitting there grinning like a Cheshire Cat.

"Very good Mister Reidquat. Who else?"

Monty pointed at White_Eyes, who also did not bet anything, and who placed a wager which cost Jarema the previous hand.

And that meant that there was one more gangster.

Montmorency noted that White_Eyes wouldn't have placed that last minute scummy wager in the previous hand unless BSmith was the final scum.

Don Pizzaguy: "Excellent work. Truly masterful. And it looks like all your chips are belong to us."

All the gamblers remaining sat there, looking at their depleted chip totals, and realized that the gangsters had won the game, flawlessly.

There was no way they could out-bet the gangsters, who also would win the game by being 3 versus 2 on the next hand. Impossible for the gamblers to win their money back.

"Don't fret, everyone. I got what I wanted, which is my money. So I will spare your lives. Now all you have to worry about is those sleazy greaseballs across town that you owe money to. Tell you what, another round of drinks and a pizza on the house, courtesy of the Don Pizzaguy Hotel, Casino, and Delivery/Dine-In/Take Out Pizzeria Emporium of Total Gaming Madness."

Relieved at this news, they all took a bite of the pizza, and began drinking the fabulous drinks brought to the table.

Chaotix: "Hey, boss.... ain't you gonna kill these mooks?"

Don Pizzaguy: "Why? I got my money. This is not personal, it's just business. You should really lighten up."

So the penniless gamblers ate all their free food, and drank all their free drinks. And Don Pizzaguy was pleased.

But then there was an awkward silence, while the waitresses just stood looking at the remaining gamblers, as if anticipating something.

Visorslash: "Uh.... did I miss something?"

Don Pizzaguy: "I cannot believe the level of disrespect shown here. I offer you your lives. I offer you free food, and free drink, out of my own pocket. And this is the thanks I get?"

Makrell: "W-w-what do you mean?"

Don Pizzaguy: "What did I tell you to remember to do? Weren't you listening? I'm an insane, murderous tyrant, and when I tell you to do something, you'd better freaking do it."

A cold chill fell over the table. All the gamblers sat frozen. Chaotix, BSmith, and White_Eyes looked to Don Pizzaguy hopefully.

Don Pizzaguy: "I told you to tip your waitress at the end of the game. Do you not care about the plight of the working class? I cannot tolerate such disrespect.
Dewey, Cheatum, Howe, give them their check."

The three Made Men stood up, revealing tommy guns from inside their trenchcoats.

Montmorency: "TRENCHCOATS!?! WHY DIDN'T I SEE THOSE UNTIL NOW!?!"

Don Pizzaguy: "Would have made this whole game pretty easy to solve if I mentioned it earlier. I truly hope you enjoyed your stay at the Don Pizzaguy Hotel, Casino, and Delivery/Dine-In/Take Out Pizzeria Emporium of Total Gaming Madness."

You three are my most experienced and toughest wiseguys. But the life of a goon, no matter how moderately well-paid, is not everything you ever dreamed of. Sure, there's plenty of cash, and sure, women are attracted to men with power. But power and money isn't everything. For example, you could stand to have more power, and more money. That would be twice as good.

You don't want to be goons the rest of your lives. And there's plenty of room for advancement in this organization. You see, some of my top guys went and did something stupid and started working for a rival family, and now, they're taking a dirt nap. So, opportunities open up, whenever a door closes, a window opens, because you gotta let out the dead body smell somehow.

I could use a trio of Made Men, and I think you three are just the wiseguys for the job.

Being a Made, now that's something special. You'd practically have it made, in fact. You'd have goons of your very own. Power, prestige, and a larger cut of the money. We pay off the cops to leave our Mades alone. Unless you run off somewhere and shoot a judge in front of a senator, or are dumb enough to be caught on camera doing something illegal, you'll be fine. Remember, you pay your goons to get their hands dirty. You've already paid your dues.

But I have one final task for you, before I decide to make you one of the untouchables. You see, there's this group of compulsive gamblers what owe me a lot of money, and in spite of my polite insistence that they pay their debts, they've gone and gambled it all away.

Now, it's true that I ended up getting my money back one way or the other, since they lost the funds at my casino. But if something unthinkable had happened, and they actually won some money, they'd be obligated to pay me my money out of their winnings. Nobody should get a free chance to win money from us. Even though they lost the money here, they still owe on their original loan.

So, I have informed them that they have one last chance to leave this casino with their thumbs still attached: They've got to find another loan shark, borrow more money, and come back to this casino and win back the money they owe me, and repay their debt. If they don't, well, they sleep with the fishes.

But there cannot be a chance in hell that they win money at my casino. That's not how the system works. If they win money, I don't get paid. And if I don't get paid, you don't get paid. But worse than that, I will personally feel very disrespected.

Your job is to bring them to our "exclusive" VIP tables in the back, where you will carefully supervise their most unfortunate losing streak, wherein they pay back all the money that they owe me, by losing it at our card tables. And if you wiseguys aren't as wise as I think you are, and go and do something stupid like lose MORE of my money, that will be a very bad thing for you.

If some of these gamblers start thinking that they're going to count cards or work together to beat you three at MY tables, I need you to start pulling them aside, and snapping some necks. MAKE SURE you get every dollar they have on them, and then toss their broken bodies in the dumpster out back.


Each night, so long as two of you are still in the game, you'll be offered a chance to whack two deadbeats.


If only one of you are left standing, you'll only get enough time to whack one deadbeat.


The other rules are simple. When you bet my chips, you've got to blend in and look like you're compulsive gamblers. These deadbeats can't know the game is rigged. So you will lose chips if and when you bet on our valued guests. You'll get your chips back if you're forced to throw a fellow goon under the bus and you succeed.

Here's 300 betting chips, split three ways. That's 100 betting chips apiece.


If you lose all of my betting chips, then you have failed in your task of milking these deadbeats dry, and they turned the tables on you. At that point, I'll have to find myself another three goons.


You need not worry about detectives or other nonsense in this game. These are our private tables in the back of our casino, and I've personally spoken to all of these deadbeats who owe me money. If they were in law enforcement, I'd have been able to sniff that out. Just concern yourself with swindling these deadbeats out of their money, and not losing all of your money.

And be sure to whack the deadbeats that you feel stand in the way of me getting all my money.

Do this, and you will have it made, in the shade, with a glass of lemonade.

Fail, and you'll be whacked, sacked, and tossed in the dumpsters out back.

It has come to my attention that you're all about to default on the loans that you acquired from this fine establishment. We certainly appreciate your business, but it is quite imperative that you honor your agreements here at this hotel, casino, and family dining establishment, because not paying your bill can cause you to accidentally slip and fall and break your necks, one by one.

But there's a rival casino across town, offering similar loan services. I would recommend you call them up and do whatever it takes to procure one of their fine loan products. How you pay them back, is none of my concern.

The issue you will run into is that their loan limits are a bit stricter than ours. Ergo, you will need to win back the remainder of the monies that you owe me, at our exclusive VIP card tables that we have set up in the back. It's totally legitimate. All you have to do is win a few hands, and you'll have all the cash you need to pay me back.

I would caution you that if you lose all of the money that you borrow from the casino across town, then I will be forced to conclude that you'll never pay me back, and that you're nothing more than a deadbeat. And as such, I will be forced to revoke your status as a valued guest, and you'll be more like an unwelcome trespasser. Not to worry, in such an instance we will show you the way out, and make sure you get there as expediently as possible.

If I think you're counting cards or trying to pull a fast one on me, those large, burly men in the corner holding various heavy, blunt objects will start earning their rather impressive paycheck. And they do enjoy their work, so I would recommend keeping things on the up and up. I promise you, on my honor as a ruthless and untrustworthy greaseball mobster, I will not rig the game to ensure that you fail, by say, stacking the deck with three of my best wiseguys playing against you and making sure you lose every hand that you play.

It's a totally legitimate game. All you have to do is win, and pay me my money, and uh, you'll be awarded one additional complimentary slice of pizza, and an injury-free ticket out of my casino. You will be welcome back any time.

You'll still have to pay back the greaseball mobsters across town, but hey, that's not really MY concern, now is it?

This had all the hallmarks of a close game. White_Eyes and I should have been the obvious lynch choices for town. WE’s save of me was a pretty blatant move, and one with a ton of risk. When Monty fingered Chaotix out of the blue, it could have been really tough for us to win, but thankfully there was a little too much analysis and you guys went down the wrong path.

Ultimately, it really was the case that I was too soft. I caved as soon as I saw that Visor and Makrell were not playing ball, and decided to ride the outcome on voting my second candidate. All that analysis was mostly to convince myself that I was doing the right thing, and if you go back over it you'll see that it never really shows Riedquat to be any likelier to be scum than Chaotix.

I should have forced the issue - taken a principled stand. Had I managed it... I only would have needed Riedquat and Auto on my side. You guys only had 131 chips, so 160+ would have overwhelmed you for sure. And eventually I would have brought at least Visor along with pure reason: "Better to vote the leading candidate and bet on getting the money back, as in any other scenario we lose"...

With that, you two would have been the only remaining candidates, and as the poorest players would have lost all chance at sudden-death victory. Townie triumph would have been assured, and the glory seized for ourselves!
