Each year for the past 6 or so, I've been attending Eagle on the Danube (FB page (https://www.facebook.com/eagleonthedanube), official page (http://www.eagleonthedanube.org/)), a reenactment festival where we see Roman legions, Dacian barbarians, gldaitor fights, even the occasional real ballista (I helped the guys from Poland fix their ballista 2 years ago). It happens in a small city in Bulgaria on the Danube coast, called Svishtov. I'm there very frequently because my girlfriend attends the university there.

Now I read that the Roman settlement of Novae which is on the edge of town will be reconstructed based on the archeological foundations. According to this (http://svishtov-info.net/news/22132?fb_comment_id=fbc_529143713844683_3134729_532392916853096#f35cb2d8) article:

"A massive restoration and building project is ongoing at the moment in the Roman settlement Novae near Svishtov. The architectural remains from the settlement date back from late antiquity and will be completely restored under the "Novae - heart of the legion" project. This project has earned 5.8 million leva in financial aid from the "Regional development" EU fund (note: that's 2.9 million Euro), and nearly 300,000 leva (150,000 Euro) will be provided by the municipality of Svishtov.

The reconstruction should be completed by March 2014 according to deputy mayor Plamen Alexandrov. The construction work is on schedule, he assures us. The building site is massive - over 200000 square meters. We will see a restored headquarters of Legio I Italica, complete with the shrine of the standards. Restoration of the episcopal complex, the small basilica, the large episcopate and the baptistery are also included in the project.

Actions to socialize and display the site will turn Novae and the region into an attractive destination for tourists. Amphiteater like seats will be constructed, so that visitors can view the spectacles on the massive outdoor stage. Apart from seeing the already completed buildings, the visitors will also be able to observe the ongoing work of the archeologists who will continue to study the site."

So Legio I Italica had a barracks on the Danube in my country :laugh4: I have newfound sentimentality for them and will probably start a new game with Rome when the next patch hits.

Do any of you visit such festivals (medieval or antique) and watch/participate in reenacting? By the way, any people from Europe who can come are welcome to join this year!

I don't, or didn't, unless I am dragged there XD Does Tankfest count?

I've been to some sort of medieval re enactment thing in Bavaria last year while I was on a holiday there but I can't remember what it was called but these people they had posing as European knights in full armour along with their armoured horses looked really good, if a little scary at times :D

It sounds like something I'd enjoy going to but I've never really travelled just for something like that.

Well travelling from Germany or the USA for a (rather small) event like this doesn't make sense. Actually the only way to make sense of it for a US citizen would be to do a Euro trip thing.

For a German, you can go to our beaches (half of the tourists are German here. The other half are Russian.) as there are some pretty sweet resorts and hotels, and pubs that serve German beer, play German music and so on. Eagle on the Danube happens around the end of May or the beginning of June so provided the spring is warm you can combine this with a seaside vacation.

I'd recommend Sozopol (https://www.google.bg/search?q=sozopol&espv=210&es_sm=93&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ei=gG5xUtbKFoTcswa91YG4DQ&ved=0CAkQ_AUoAQ&biw=1280&bih=652) (the old name is Anthea - sound familiar? :laugh4:) although most of the Germans go to Golden Sands or Sunny Beach.
