The three remaining survivors had agreed on some ground rules before they began the day's voting, since it was certain to be a messier affair than on the previous days. First of all, it would be voice vote only. On previous days they had gotten by with makeshift pencils and paper and handed all of their votes to a mutually agreed-upon votemaster to tally everything up. Today, however, given the circumstances this would prove to be folly. Second of all, the method of execution, for means of convenience, would be a 2-on-1 flaming log beatdown due to the nature of how the outcome would be. Thirdly, and most importantly, the voting would conclude when the last sliver of the sun disappeared over the Mississippi, no matter what.

They three sat around the campfire. There had been little discussion at first - most people had made the decision in their heads. Yaseikhaan voted for johnhughthom, half-heartedly joking around as he did so. Askthepizzaguy backed up khaan on this and also voted for JHT after a 17-minute discourse on why exactly he was doing this that left the other two more confused about why Pizza was voting for JHT now than before he had started speaking. johnhughthom, outnumbered and sensing defeat, placed his vote on khaan without comment. ATPG, sensing closure, picked up his log and brought it closer to the campfire.

However, that's when khaan spoke again. "Ah ah ah, not so fast, Pizzaguy. I'm switching my vote over to you. First one to blink is scum."

And that's where the waiting began. ATPG just laughed, partially out of shock, and partially out of pure amusement. Of course it would come down to this, after all. JHT simply sat in silence, noting his change in fortunes without comment.

Hours passed in silence.

The small sounds of nature, the background, ambient noises that people had failed to notice for the first week they were the "guests" of the campground in Clinton, Iowa, finally came to the forefront in the absence of any other sound since the only three people to make them sat and waited, monitoring the progress of the sun. The rushing of the Mississippi River, that great American landmark, dividing the country into East and West, finally having returned to its usual height after the freak storm of the past week. The slow, soft crackling of the fire against the wood that it ate to sustain itself. Nobody made any move to add more fuel to the fire, since after tonight, there would be no point to it. The rustling of the trees that framed the campground and the creatures that lay within. Those woods had been deadly, claiming their share of victims over the week, some who had penetrated them deeper than others.

The sun crawled its way to the horizon.

Despite the slow drop in temperature, sweat beads were starting to form over the three survivors' faces. There was a possibility that this was due to the fact that they had been so close to the fire for so long, but the fire was not that strong. Everybody knew the real reason was nerves. So close to the end, the pressure was getting to all of them, innocent or guilty. One of the three moved to wipe away his sweat. Time marched on.

Inch by inch, second by second, the sun continued its dip.

Three pairs of eyes flickered across the campfire to each other now, each waiting for the first to make the first move. Still though, there was silence. Even the ambient sounds now had dropped off, as if the entire world had stopped what it was doing to watch and wait, watch these three men who had been through so much and wait for the sun to finish its descent in the meantime. There were only seconds left now.

The sun dipped some more... and then it was gone. The earth was now only illuminated by twilight and the campfire.

And finally, the silence was broken. "So now what?"

The question went unanswered. However, something had changed. All three men went for their logs and dipped them into the fire. The flames caught on all three, and now all three of them held them up, only steps away from each other.

Tick.

The sweat was pouring down everyone's faces now. Nobody was quite sure what to do. A million options went through everybody's head individually per second, but it all came down to the one horrible truth for each of them: all of them were too frozen with fear to make the first move. There would be no tricks; nobody would pull out a gun and waste one of their competitors when people weren't looking. All they had was their wits.

Tick.

Every second was an eternity. Children were born, lived their lives, raised families of their own, and died in the time it took for the seconds digit on a watch to flick.

Tick.

Finally, the silence was broken. johnhughthom raised his log and his voice. "I change my vote," he said. "I'm going for Pizza."

Suddenly, everything broke. The spell that time seemed to have over the three of them ended instantly, and things happened very quickly in the next few instances, as if to make up for lost time.

Askthepizzaguy looked crestfallen. There was no time to react, no time to talk his way out of this one. All he barely had to do was lift his own fiery log in self-defense. JHT looked determined, ready to put and end to the round that should have finished several days ago, and moved in for the kill against ATPG. But nobody saw the expression on Yaseikhaan's face, or even where khaan was at all. With ghostly speed, he crossed over the fire, raised his log, and thwacked JHT over the head with a lethal blow before JHT had the time to move against Pizza for good.

As johnhughthom's corpse lay bleeding over the ground, ATPG looked over at khaan, in wordless shock.

"Three things," khaan said. "One, I change my vote to JHT. Two, I was just enforcing the rules. He voted after sunset."

It took ATPG a second or two to find his voice, his eyes still unimaginably wide. "...a-and three?" he stammered out.

"He blinked first."

The two men retired to their tents for the night.
