A large hand pulls you out of your dreams of home and onto the sands. The Roman, clad in armor, quickly grasps the shackles between your wrists and shoves you into a lineup with the others.

Covered in dust from the road and bruised and bloody from the treatment of the Roman guards you await your new Dominus along with your fellow future-brothers.

A Roman man dressed in brilliant colored robes and accompanied by a larger man wielding a whip entered the room.

The Roman began to speak, "I am your Dominus, your master. And you..." he looked down the lines, "Are but slaves... gladiators, who will fight and die for the honor of this House. Do as I and your Doctoré commands, and see yourself elevated! Bring honor to this House, and see yourself well rewarded. Dishonor us, and see yourself face down in a pool of your own blood!"

He walked down the line, inspecting his new acquisition, "Doctoré!" The man who entered with him approached, "Yes, Dominus!"

"Begin their training..."

Official Rules & Game Mechanics:

Winning the game:

Become Champion of your House
- Winning battles in the Arena is the only way to achieve the title of Champion. Also, training during your free time to increase your attributes is necessary to be able to stand a chance against your superiors.

Buy your Freedom
- Earn money through winning battles in the Arena, place and win wagers on other battles, maneuver your Loyal Servant for your gain, get creative!

Escape your House
- Telling you how to escape wouldn’t be any fun! Get creative, grasshoppa!

Getting Started:
Your role PM will have some randomly generated character information like what House they are in and their height, but most aspects of your character will be chosen by you! Here's some details...

Name: Player chosen (must be accurate to setting and accepted by me)
House: Determined randomly
Height: Determined randomly
Weight: Determined by Strength attribute with Height
Physical Attributes: Strength, Agility, Endurance, & Perception - 20 points allocated over 4 categories, max 10, min 1
Gladiator Type: There are 4 choices here, Gallus (Heavy armor, Shield and Sword), Hoplomachus (Heavy armor, Shield and Spear), Dimachaerus (Two swords), or Retarius (Net and Trident). Each have their strengths and weaknesses. Take a look at the "Battle" section for more information.
Battle Tactics: Here is where your creativity and strategy can shine! You will have the opportunity to enhance your character's fighting style as you see fit by describing how he fights. You may get as detailed or be as general as you want, but it never hurts to cover all bases. Giving this aspect some time will prove quite useful in the Arena. You have the opportunity to edit your Battle Tactics any time, it's not set in stone!

Types of Gladiators:
All four of the gladiator types are each unique in their own way, and each boast their strengths and attempt to hide their weaknesses. Here is a quick list and some details on each.

Gallus
- Shield & Sword, Heavy Armor (Strength >6) -
Strengths: Heavy armor, good damage dealing capabilities
Weaknesses: Slowed down by heavy armor, helmet limits vision, no long distance weapon
Major Attributes: Strength & Endurance
Best versus: Retarius
Worst versus: Dimachaerus

Hoplomachus
- Shield & Spear, Heavy Armor (Strength >6) -
Strengths: Heavy armor, good damage dealing capabilities
Weaknesses: Slowed down by heavy armor, helmet limits vision, no close combat weapon
Major Attributes: Strength & Endurance
Best versus: Dimachaerus
Worst versus: Retarius

Dimachaerus
- Two Swords, Light Armor -
Strengths: Speed, good damage dealing capabilities
Weaknesses: Vulnerable to damage, no long distance weapon
Major Attributes: Perception & Agility
Best versus: Gallus
Worst versus: Hoplomachus

Retarius
- Net & Trident, Light Armor -
Strengths: Speed, long and short distance weapons
Weaknesses: Vulnerable to damage, no close combat weapon
Major Attributes: Perception & Agility
Best versus: Hoplomachus
Worst versus: Gallus

Gameplay:

Life of a gladiator was very much structured; the majority of your time is not your own. That is time used by the Doctore to keep up your training and prepare you for the Games.

Unrealistically, in this game, you will be given an allotment of time per turn to use for your own. Use this time to develop your character as you see fit. Strength isn’t high enough? Spend your time doing extra training, but beware, you will also be fatigued.

Chosen to follow the path of the money-maker? Plan to buy your freedom? Fight in Exhibition Matches. Though not always easy, these prove to be even more spectacle for the crowd, and pays even more. These fights will not result in an increase in rank, so if you wish to stay under the radar as a lowly veteranus, this is your path.

Chosen a character bent on escaping? Muse over your surroundings and learning the habits of the guards, eventually your chance of a successful escape will be high enough to attempt it (if you dare).

The typical Ludus had a large network of servants and slaves to attend their masters. Some never left the Dominus and the Domina’s side. Others did the running, delivering food to the gladiators in their cells and dealing with the merchant when he came from town. One of these servants is especially loyal to you all as gladiators, and has your best interest in mind. Beware though, you may ask him to do whatever you want, but he too has limited access to resources and if he’s caught doing something he shouldn’t be doing, he could be put to death, or worse. Use caution when seeking help from your Loyal Servant.

This is a time of creativity, use it as you see fit. Give me details of your actions and what you expect the results to be, usually I will agree and grant the benefits to you. Be realistic, however. You are a slave, you cannot waltz out the front door, nor can you sleep with the Domina. (All actions of sexuality will be omitted from this game, although the reality is gladiators and sex were synonymous…)

Examples of what can be done, and what cannot be done, will be listed.

Order Phase (48-72 hours) – During this phase, you will inform me via PM as to what you wish to do during your free time. Your very few hours per day will be devoted as you see fit, and the results of your efforts will be posted during the next phase.
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/107487965@N04/10760584433/" title="Ludus2 by zainanduin, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5503/10760584433_014a2de0e3_o.jpg" width="655" height="368" alt="Ludus2"></a>

Discussion Phase (48-72 hours) – During this time, your PM’s from the previous phase will be taken into account and the results posted. It is recommended HIGHLY that as much relevant discussion takes place in thread as possible during this time. Why? There is a “Luck Factor” involved in this game that governs every event and all aspects of it. The “Luck Factor” will be determined directly by the amount of relevant discussion you posted. The player with the most discussion (gloating about character stats, debating fighting styles, plans/goals they have set, ideas on how to get ahead in game, etc…) will get the highest boost from the “Luck Factor”. More will be explained on the “Luck Factor” later and will be mentioned many times by the host. Also you may make a “Challenge” this is a public announcement that you wish to challenge any player in the Arena. That player then must respond with giving his acceptance/denial. Challenges won’t always be carried on into the Arena, the Dominus wasn’t always persuaded by his men, but everybody enjoys a good rivalry and to see them carried out.
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/107487965@N04/10760588936/" title="Discussion 2 by zainanduin, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm3.staticflickr.com/2893/10760588936_b89af2c685_o.jpg" width="655" height="361" alt="Discussion 2"></a>

Arena Phase (<24 hours) – Selected gladiators from both Houses will be sent to the Arena where they will fight an equal or lesser opponent. You may challenge others or request to fight in an Exhibition match. How to do these things are covered in the rules section below. The matches that will be taking place in the Arena will be posted publicly in thread for the opportunity to make wagers with your fellow players. The majority of losers will be allowed to live but sometimes they will not, once dead a player has lost the game. If a player wishes to challenge a higher ranked player, they must do so during the Discussion phase and fight him in the Arena. Also winning matches in the Arena will earn you Denarii which you can use as you see fit, more detail on that later.

Free Time:
Use this time to manipulate how your character progresses.

Major directions:
1. Becoming Champion - Train your Strength, Endurance, Agility, and Perception (You must say HOW you train these things when you send in orders. An order that says, "Train Strength" will get you nowhere)
2. Buy Freedom - Maneuver your Loyal Servant towards your goals. Many things can be ATTEMPTED, but remember a servant is a servant... if he is caught doing something they're not supposed to be doing, death could be the result. Don't get your Loyal Servant killed, he isn't just yours. He's helping everybody, he wants you to succeed. Get creative in what you get him to try to do, but use caution.
3. Escape - Your Loyal Servant will be important here too, but it's not limited to just him. Get creative here too.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Be creative and tell me every detail. Then tell me what you expect the results to be. I may agree with you, or I may just have you executed. We'll see :2thumbsup:

The Ludus

http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3768/11548066443_3d80ed83a7_z.jpg

The ludus is the enclosure for all gladiators, where they are trained and housed. It was passed on to the Dominus from his father, who was in the same profession. The ground level is a gladiator ludus whilst the upper levels are the Dominus' villa.

The building, being situated on the edge of a mountainside, boasts a brilliant view over all of Capua.

The Layout:

The lower parts of the ludus are the areas for the gladiators. The entrance gate is here, which leads directly onto a training ground. One edge of this square is unwalled and falls off to a sheer cliff. Beyond the training ground is the eating area for the gladiators, and on this floor are their cells/rooms (only the gladiators of higher worth are allowed rooms of their own). The trainee gladiators and others sleep with a few others in cells similar to those in a prison. There is also a bathing area on this level.

A barred gate separates the gladiators from the living quarters above the ludus, which house the Dominus, his wife, and their slaves. The gate is locked every night when the gladiators are shut away for sleep. This upper area is far more lavish than the ludus below, befitting for a Roman citizen of moderate standing. The house burrows into the mountain behind and has a balcony overlooking the gladiator training area.

There is a general social area with an ornamental pool in the center and leading off from this are various other rooms, including the Dominus' sleeping quarters and a large pool that serves as a bath.

Living Quarters:

Aside from the House Champion and Doctore, who has their own separate rooms from the rest, all other gladiators share a cell with one or more others. They sleep in a barred cell, all under lock and key and guarded nightly. The only exits from the living quarters are two barred gates, one that enters the training grounds and one that enters the Lanista's Villa. Both of which are guarded nightly as well.

Training Grounds:

Wooden weapons and shields are typically used for training, which are openly available. Also heavy objects like logs and others sit available as well. Training is guided by the Doctore, who pairs gladiators for battle training, sets aside groups for weight training, and so forth.

As shown in the graphic as well as in the description, the training ground serves as the official entrance into the ludus which is heavily guarded at all times. Also the grounds has only 3 walls, as the fourth side is open to the vertical cliff which displays a spectacular view of the city.

This cliff is not scalable, the Romans of ancient times had not the equipment necessary to do so.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

(Both Major Ludi have the same layout, this is both for simplicity's sake and for the most part historically accurate)

Arena:
Gladiators from each house will compete in the Arena per turn.

NOTE: You MUST post in the thread saying you wish to compete in the Arena during the Discussion Phase. This gesture must also be in Bold. This way, you have a say in whether you compete (and possibly die) and inactive people have no chance of improving because they'll never compete.

You may also elect not compete (if you feel you aren't ready, etc) and will get a chance to conduct extra training, Loyal Servant actions, etc. Like always, creativity is key.

The scheduled battles will be announced at the beginning of the Arena Phase and wagers (posted publicly) may be made.

Entering the game, you will be a Novicius, which will quickly change to Veteranus once you have won a battle in the Arena. Winning a battle as a Novicius is worth 5 denari. Veteranus is 10d. Tertius Palus is 15d, Secundus Palus 20d, and Primus Palus 25d.

The payment is low for a slave in every case, but Exhibition Matches pay well. A regular Exhibition Match pays as much as a Primus Palus battle at 25d, but doesn't add to your rank and only that one battle can take place per Arena phase.

Regular Exhibition Matches (25d) - All stats for these opponents are 7 and are randomly selected between the listed below.
Lion
Tiger
Panther
Bear
Bull
Gorillas (x3)
Wolves (x6)
Prisoners of War (x3)
Criminals (x5)

Advanced Exhibition Matches (50d) - All stats for these opponents are 9 and are randomly selected between the listed below.
(3x) of Lions, Tigers, Panthers, Bears, Bulls, or a combination of them to equal 3
(5x) Gorillas
(12x) Wolves
Lower Level Gladiators (x3)

IF you wish to fight in the Arena:
Challenge - You may challenge a fellow player by publicly posting in thread Challenge: Zain and the challengee must accept Accept Challenge: ATPG
Request - You may request to fight in an Exhibition match by publicly posting in thread "I would like to Request for a Regular Exhibition Match in the Arena" or "I would like to Request for an Advanced Exhibition Match in the Arena." It is suggested that you be specific...

NOTE: Not all challenges or requests will be honored, the Gods may have other plans... such is the life of a slave.

Rules:
1. You are limited in what you can accomplish on your own, such is the life of a gladiator.
2. Inactivity will surely end your life.
3. Trash talking is permitted but keep it respectful.
4. The dead may post in thread, this isn't a game of secrets anyway.
5. Unrealistic orders will be ignored as I see fit. You will be given the chance to change them if time permits.
6. All Arena challenges and wagers will be posted publicly, no private transactions will be allowed.
7. You MUST post in thread during the Discussion Phase if you wish to compete in the Arena. Example: "I would like to Compete in the Arena this phase."
8. If you wish to challenge someone to a battle in the Arena, you must post it publicly and they must accept. This format must be used. Challenge: Zain and Accept Challenge: ATPG
9. If you wish to request to fight in an Exhibition Match, you MUST post it publicly. Example: I, Zain, Request to fight in an Exhibition Match.
(Note: Not all Challenges or Requests will be honored in the Arena. Sometimes the Gods have other plans...)
10. If you wish to place a wager on one of the publicly announced Arena matches, you MUST post it publicly in this format Wager: 10d on Zain
(Note: Losing a wager will result in the loss of your money every time.)
11. Do not wager money you do not have.
12. More to be added later.

FAQ: (To be added to later)
Explain the phases again and what I can do during them?
Order Phase: This is when you PM me and tell me what you wish to do during your "Free Time". This can include trainings for attributes, dealing with your Loyal Servant, and any other creative avenue you can come up with. Remember, give me all the details and what you're expecting the results to be, and I may just agree. Also remember, all pertinent discussion in the thread governs your individual "Luck Factor". The more discussion that takes place in thread, the higher your "Luck Factor" will be. Talk away!

Discussion Phase: This is when you post in thread any and all discussion you wish to have (battle tactic ideas, gloating about stats, etc) Also if you wish to compete in the Arena in the next Arena Phase you MUST say so in bold during this phase. You may also challenge other players (who must accept your challenge) or request to fight in an Exhibition match. If you wish to avoid the Arena, you may by saying so or saying nothing, only players who wish to compete and say so in bold will compete. Lastly, your results from the Order Phase will be sent to you and any public information from them will be posted as well.

Arena Phase: This is when the battles are publicly posted and wagers, gloating, etc may take place. Results of the battles (who wins, who's injured, who died, who won/lost wagers) will be posted at the end of this phase.

(It is highly recommended that you subscribe to this thread and the Story Thread (https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showthread.php?146412-Gladiator-Houses-Collide-Story-Thread), and check back to them for regular updates)

Character Creation prologue PMs have been sent out! We will take as much time as we need within reason to get that process completed. Timer below is for tentative ending of this phase and beginning of the first Order Phase!

Feel free to begin discussion, asking questions, complimenting my work, complaining about my work, etc. :2thumbsup:

Gaius Tullius Ahenobarbus greets you my fellow gladiators. Where is the exquisite corner for the educated Roman.

I used to be part of a great Roman family, but on my cursus honorum, I got into a bit too much debt, forcing me to sell everything including myself. But who thinks hecan mess with me, well, he better thinks twice !!

EDIT: Do we need to chose a name from the names that were already listed?

Double A

Your role PM will have some randomly generated character information like what House they are in and their height, but most aspects of your character will be chosen by you! Here's some details...

I didn't get height or a House.

Zain

EDIT: Do we need to chose a name from the names that were already listed?

No, the Prologue PM requests that you choose a name that has not already been listed. Thus, "Gaius" has already been taken. Your character will be referred to as "Tullius" and your surname will be forfeit to and by the title of slave/gladiator.

I didn't get height or a House.

The PM you received was a Prologue PM, in which you make your decisions. Once officially accepted by Host, your true Role PM (Character Card) will be sent to you containing all of the extra information (Height, House, etc)

Hope that answered your questions

Oh bugger, I wanted to base my class on how the champion of my house fights.

Good point, however if this information were available, everybody would choose the same class, thus removing the mystery and excitement of variation.

Edit: Further, advancement matches don't necessarily have to be against members of your own House in case you choose the wrong type... *Easter Egg*

Also, I am a bit in denial about my new state, so don't mind if I refer to myself with the wrong name

So do our names have to be Roman sounding, or just of the Roman era? In other words, can we be foreign gladiators?

Zain

Romans renamed their gladiators as slaves, giving them familiar names for the crowd.

"Hardened by the frozen wastes of Ultima Thule comes the mighty barbarian Berno Ferrolatus, as powerful as a bear and fast enough to strike with iron in your side!"

Hey! My name is Björn Ironside, a name worthy of legendary kings. Simply because you weaklings can't pronounce it properly doesn't mean I'm called anything else.

"For that, you'll lose your surname. Who's the man with an army and a whip? I'm sure you'll agree who's calling the shots here... Berno."

*Angry mutterings*

Stumbled upon that Björn Ironside is supposed to been an old king according to the legends, so I had to.

Order Phase has begun!

Allow me to give you the perspective:

You have begun your first series of training. You're tired and sore, you're used to a better diet, and you sleep on the ground in a cell. Life isn't exactly great.

From sunrise to sunset you're on the training grounds as demanded by your Dominus. You are allowed an allotment of free time to do as you wish. Your job as the player is to PM and tell me what that is. (If you'd like more information refer to the Official Rules & Game Mechanics section on Post #1 or ask via thread)

Also, for the 4 players who have not completed their characters, feel free to do so at any time, there is no time limit.

NOTE: The "Luck Factor" has now taken effect. ALL pertinent discussion that takes place in the thread will count in your favor. If you are typically a lurker, now is NOT the time to do so, as you will slowly become disadvantaged in comparison to your more enthusiastic counterparts.

Let the building begin! PM me once you decide, and give me as much detail as you wish plus what you hope to accomplish.

Gentlemen, it is my intent to buy my way out of this prison. I will of course train to the best of my ability (so I don't get killed to quickly lol) My understanding is there will be arena battles for exhibition. Could those victories yield more profit? Challenge me and I will leave you lying in a pool of your own blood in the middle of the arena, but would rather maintain the utmost respect for my fellow slaves. I am not as interested in outranking you because of battle as I am taking your money! :laugh4:

I, Sextus from house Avidius, was born for greatness. I didnt think it will come in the shape of being gladiator, though. But when evil fate throws me into this situation, I have no other choice but become first among many. Beware!

As for perception... maybe concentrating and trying to count all little waves that are created when sand is thrown into the water? or observing small changes in some kind of natural phenomena? Or comparing two, seemingly identical things, in order to find differences between them? One can even contemplate his own hands in this way!

I, Amulius of House Lucilius am looking forward to slitting your throats. If that's what it takes to get out of this bloody prison, then I will do it. After I'm free the one who put me here will die!

Perception can of course be improved by seeing women do certain things...

Discussion Phase has begun!

What is the point of this phase?

Well, given the nature of this game, a lot of variables are being crunched at the same time. So to guarantee a write-up exactly at the end of every Order Phase would be highly unrealistic. The primary reason for this phase is to give your Host a chance to bring you your results and a quality write-up when he has time to do so.

What's your job while I do all the work?

Discussion to influence your Luck Factor is YOUR primary objective. Role play (I know you want to).

What else?

The phase after this one is the Arena Phase. You all will get the chance to join us there, but you MUST tell me. As per the rules, you have three options...

1.) You may Challenge... Want to fight another player? Challenge:Zain then the "challengee" must Accept Challenge:ATPG. Odds are, you will get what you want IF both of you agree. Wish to challenge a particular NPC? Say so! You may get what you want. (Note: Challenging a higher ranked NPC will dramatically decrease your odds of success)
2.) You may Request... Want to fight in the Arena or an exhibition match but don't care who you fight? Then say "I wish to Request to fight in the Arena" or something to that effect. You may also Request an Exhibition Match or Request an Advanced Exhibition Match.
3.) You may choose not to fight in the Arena. Do this by saying so "I wish to Decline my attendance in the Arean" or just say nothing.

So get to posting! I will work on the Private and Public Write-ups and post them before the end of this phase. Any Requests, Challenges, etc that are placed after the deadline will not be taken into account.

Any questions? Go ahead and ask

I suggest we here at Lucilius extend the olive branch to Avidius and band together and destroy Maxentius and Quintinius! That will help build our rankings and wealth. It seems I remember reading there is a rivalry between our two houses but our host chose to remove that. Not sure if that still exists, but I'm assuming we can all agree to play our characters as united together. There are plenty of other NPC's to pick on. :whip: Thoughts?

Spoken like a true Novicius! Foolish talk cometh from those who rush quickly into battle with one of the superior houses! It is not from cowardice that I speak, but from ambition. If the two of you go to battle, surely one of you will die - most likely, Ambustus (Ishmael). You are no match for my house brother, Tullius (Darth Feather). Write-up 1

House of Avidius

"The House of Avidius swells with new blood for the sands." Doctore Titanius commented, greeting his Dominus.

Hadrianus Marianus Avidius, a man of arrogance and pride, responded with a smile on his face, "To be spilled by none other than Lucilius' men, no doubt."

The two walked together, viewing the stock, "Do any show potential?" Dominus inquired.

Doctore sighed, "Most are mediocre at best, soft from lack of sword or whip."

Dominus eyed a tall lean man wielding a net, "What of that one?" Doctore glanced over, "Festus is his name, training as a Retarius. He shows potential, but none to rival our Champion."

Dominus laughed, "None in this House could stand an equal to Terentius! Save for yourself of course, a past Champion who's brought much glory to this ludus."

Doctore bowed his head, "Dominus."

Avidius strolled a bit more, his bright robe the only sign of color in the yard, "What of that one?" He pointed to a tall man, not quite the stature of Festus, wielding a sword and shield. "We call him Valentinus but he insists on calling himself "Getinbetarix" and commonly mentions the forest from whence he came and his Gods."

Dominus laughed even harder, "Slave needs to forget his past, he is who we say he is now. This is his home."

House of Lucilius

"He said what!?" Dominus Livianus Septimius Lucilius yelled, slamming his fist down on the table at which he sat.

His wife Livia, standing next to him, spoke boldly, "No slave shall deny his dominus, not without punishment!"

Doctore Ovidius bowed his head, "What would you have me do, Dominus?"

Lucilius stood up and walked around the desk, indirectly speaking to his Doctore, "I command respect and honor from my gladiators..." He looked Ovidius in the eye, "Go open his eyes."

Doctore bowed quickly, "Yes Dominus!" and left the room. He walked quickly, down the staircase and to the left, through the courtyard, then down two stories to the cells where the new slaves were kept who had yet to receive the mark.

He approached the guard at the door, "Orders of the Dominus, open cell."

The guard hesitated, then opened the gate where the five were. Doctore reached in and grabbed Decimus, the thinner man training to be a Retarius, and threw him onto the ground of the training area.

"Doctore..." Decimus began, but Ovidius denied him speech by a kick in the face. He bent down and landed a few solid punches to the nose and eye of the man, leaving him bleeding and cowering. "Dominus demands your cooperation, or die a faceless slave! There will be no "peace", there will be no "friendship" with Avidius' men. There will only be glory and honor in the Arena!" Doctore landed one more kick to finish the job. He looked at the guard and pointed to the bleeding man, "See him to the medicus..."

He looked at the guard and pointed to the bleeding man, "See him to the medicus..."[/I]

OOC: Ok, that didn't go as planned. :whip::whip::whip::whip::whip::whip::whip: I'll be sure and use OOC from now on!

Having spent a little time wrestling (with those of his House who were willing to grapple the Gaulish giant), Valentinus found himself mildly fatigued and certainly no richer for the experience: Yet his overall humours had improved. The Gods had clearly chosen him a path on which a warriors skills might surely be improved. Valentinus lay back and fell into a deep and restful sleep: His dreams hidden - buried beneath exhaustion - were troubled, only slightly, by visions of finding himself in the arena, armed with naught but a copper-haired young beauty and spinning in some kind of dance with the carefree abandon only achieved by those who have never suffered the defeat and bondage, that a victorious Rome inflicts upon its foes.

Pre-Arena 1

"The magistrate will join us momentarily." his wife announced as she and her ancillae entered the room. Hadrianus Avidius and Livianus Lucilius, along with Lunistae from other Houses including some from other cities, had gathered to dictate who would offer their men in the Arena. Avidius and Lucilius shared the proper pleasantries while simultaneously imagining the other at the end of a gladius.

After some time, magistrate Sabinas Tiberius Gaius Appius entered the room adorned in Rome's finest of drapery. "Apologies dear friends, pressing matters delayed my return." He obtained a cup of honeyed wine from his servant and beckoned his guests to do the same. "The games are upon us once again, Rome's finest gladiator city smiles once more. Any new acquisitions clamoring for position?"

Avidius responded first, "I have six new men, all showing promise. Capua would be dishonored by refusal of their attendance in this month's games."

Lucilius stole from the silence, "As do I, five new men. I would wager the magistrate would enjoy a friendly rivalry between Novicii?" He glanced at magistrate Appius and smiled at the request.

Appius responded hesitantly, "I would wager the crowd would prefer matches with gladiators they are familiar with, wouldn't you agree?"

Lucilius nodded, his smile not fading, the last thing he wanted was to offend the man who chooses who fights in his Arena, and who didn't. "Of course, we wouldn't want to starve the crowd of their heroes."

Avidius spoke again, "If I may suggest, with your approval magistrate, let us pair our veterani of lower standing against the others' novicii. Give our men a chance to prove themselves against a more seasoned opponent."

The magistrate laughed heartily, eyes bright, "Excellent idea Hadrianus! Let us compare your men and choose the matches."

Arena Phase has begun!

Because no one has any money yet, this will just be a 24 hour phase. I would just like to see a post from everyone if possible, another indication that you're here with us. Comment on the matches, make predictions, etc. Tomorrow night I'll post the results. Not every match will get a blow for blow write-up, but some will if someone dies or if something of note happens.

ALSO, a certain player is working on ways to get money in unconventional ways. This is possible for other players as well via dialogue with your Loyal Servant, Doctore, Dominus, etc

Imagine you're a rockstar or a professional athlete. How do they get money aside from their salary? Use that as a route (If money is any of your concern)

Cicero sat quietly, in the corner of the arena dungeons as the roar of the crowd overhead swelled and subsided in reaction to whatever festivities were going on above them.... But Cicero heard none of that, nor did he hear or notice the numerous gladiators, servants and other people around him... No... For he had his mind locked in... Locked in on but one man... ... ... Aulus...

Every since the matches were announced back at the barracks, Cicero had been studying Aulus, almost stalking him to the point of a few confrontations... He had watched Aulus train, watch him move, watched what he was eating, what he was drinking... Ciceros keen mind and eyes had taken it all in, and he continued this even now as the day of combat had arrived...

Aulus noticed the stares once again and shouted a dumb taunt across the room... Cicero didnt react... Except for a small sly grin and the corner of his lips... His deathly intense stare unwaivering, unrelenting...

Retreating into his mind for a moment, Cicero thought over all he knew of Aulus... A small Gallus Cicero thought, barely V.II pes, mediocre in most ways... He was stronger than Cicero, and his smaller stature would mean he had more stamina, but he was slow, and dumb... At least compared to himself...

He noticed Aulus donning his heavy armor, really too heavy for his strength... He picked up his shield and sword and gave them a few swings as he began his warm up... Cicero smiled, the armour, the weapons, his limited size and strength for a Gallus, all of these worked in Ciceros favour. Light on his feet Cicero will dance around this under sized brute, finding the weak sides and backs of the armour, cutting his legs with his duel swords... It would be quick... ... ...

Decimus had made it a habit to watch everything that went on around him. He wished he had the advantage that Cicero had - a fellow new comer to the ludus. He had been starring Aulus down since the announcements, watching his every move. At times, Cicero was humorous with his taunting stances. Some noticed as well, most didn't care. The feeble attempts of the Novicii were all but ignored in the gladiator world. "Foolish", Decimus thought. "To weaken one's own House!" It was such a conflict in his mind, but yet, Cicero had the bigger advantage.

Aulus began swinging his sword. The realizaion that soon he too would be in the ring battling a veterani struck again cold, as it had all day. He picked up his trident and gave it a powerful thrust. He was ready. The moment had come. It was the moment he had thought about since he was in prison. He eyed Cicero once more, still gazing at Aulus. It made him chuckle. He was thankful for it, for he had not so much as cracked a smile in a very long time.

But, deep in his heart, Sextus was affraid a bit. Berno seemed to be as potent as himself, but he had longer arm's reach. Fortunately, they were not going to fight in close distance! And lower height also meant, that Sextus was harder to catch with the net.

Arena Write-up 1

The lanistae from Capua and nearly a dozen from surrounding cities congregated in the pulvinus along with the magistrate and a few other Roman elites.

Many brought along their wives and servants. They were the shining light of wealth among the common folk in the Arena.

The magistrate extended a hand to Avidius, “Care to make introduction of our first match?”

The morning sun had already risen and began to peak above the Arena wall, casting a beam of light over it, Avidius answered enthusiastically, “You honor me, magistrate, but surely you are most qualified.” The magistrate quickly responded, “You are correct, and I reserve the right to bestow that right to whom I choose.”

Avidius responded with a smile, "Then you elevate me above my status, gratitude," and stood up, placing one hand out to signal the crowd to be silent. A few moments later not a soul spoke or shuffled, the stage was his.

He breathed in slowly, and then began, “Dear citizens of Capua… Romans! The gods have seen it fit to bless us with yet another month, let us now bless them with our very own sacrifice. Gladiators trained and beaten for this very day to spill their blood unto the sands! Let us begin!”

The crowd roared with the announcement. A thousand or so souls filled the stands, and none remained seated. He put his hand up again, and they slowly ceased, “Our first match is a challenge between Novicii of two cherished sons of Capua... myself, Hadrianus Marianus Avidius and my counterpart Livianus Septimius Lucilius. Let our offering to you and the gods be accepted and honored as we bless the sands with their blood!”

Again the crowd erupted, and again Avidius silenced them. “From the House of Avidius, I present to you… Ambustus the Gaul!”

The man, freshly shaven and hair cut short, adorned in armor and weapon sporting Avidius’ color entered the Arena through the opened gate. He raised his arms, shield and sword, and the crowd rejected him. Novicii are never accepted.

Not allowing the crowd’s discontent to discourage him, Ambustus smiled proudly, and prepared for the gate to allow his opponent in.

Avidius then announced, “And from my respected opponent, the House of Lucilius, Tullius!”

Tullius bursted through the gate, and the crowd responded accordingly. Once again, novicii are never accepted.

The two men, both gallus style fighters, faced the pulvinus for the signal to begin, and when it showed they erupted towards each other. Strike, parry, counterstrike, the two men stood as equals. Ambustus relied on his defensive expertise, while Tullius remained offensive by dishing out wide swings and keeping his body covered by his shield.

The battle raged, no man backing down. Tullius continued his wide sweeping attacks and in response to his repetitive attack plan, Ambustus had grown accustomed to his fighting style and automatically began to over exaggerate his blocks. When he noticed this, Tullius stopped mid-swing and planted a hard kick into Ambustus’ plexus solaris, sending the Gaul flying back. He immediately lunged towards him, using his shield to knock the sword out of the man’s hand and placed his own blade against the defeated man’s neck.

The crowd surged at this point, an incredible display of excellence from the new gladiator. Tullius placed his foot on the man's chest and looked to the pulvinus as the defeated raised the missio.

The magistrate clapped excitedly, “Looks like your man has the victor, Livianus. Why don’t you choose the fate of the fallen?”

Livianus Lucilius caught eyes with the defeated Hadrianus Avidius and saw the desperation for his man’s life. He stood up, wishing his man to end the Gaul’s life, but he heard the crowd, “live… Live… LIVE!”

He held his hand out until the crowd had silenced, and he announced, “Let him live!”

A sigh of relief fell from Ambustus as Tullius stepped away, his first match denying him the title of Veteranus…

“Excellent showing!” the magistrate said, “What’s next?”

Avidius responded, “First I’d like to express gratitude to Livianus for the life of my man.” He nodded to Lucilius, who waved him off and said, “I aim only to please the crowd.”

Avidius continued, “There are many matches yet to be had, magistrate. Shall we continue?”

They continued the announcements, embellishing and exciting the crowd, blood being spilled. Sextus besting Berno, Decimus over Seneca, Lugo taking Optimus…

The matches continued, and at the break of the midday sun, all of the lower-class matches had commenced. A lunch time hour would commence before the evening sun would cover the upper-class matches between champions.

You all remain alive, for now…

I would like to apologize for those of you who were not mentioned in the write-up. I simply cannot write that much for all of the matches. I will be featuring different gladiators per turn, and possibly may include more than one when time is bountiful.

For those of you who lost your matches, you remain Novicii, while the victors now hold the title of Veteranus. Also the winners were awarded 5d for winning as a Novicius.

ALL gladiators, regardless of the results of their matches, were injured at least minorly. No one sustained “life threatening” injuries, aside from Aulus and Seneca who died on the sands.

Order Phase 2 has begun! I will be sending out a PM to all combatants with some quick advice (as I feel it may be necessary) please respond to that PM with your order.

The Ludus

http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3768/11548066443_3d80ed83a7_z.jpg

(Both Major Ludi have the same layout, this is both for simplicity's sake and for the most part historically accurate)

I will be updating Post #1 to contain this information too.

Valentinus marked the neck of the fallen Retinarii with nothing more than a thin red line. As the cries of the crowd called for the veteran to keep his life, the powerful Gaulish Gallus lifted his blade and saluted the crowd. Valentinus silently gave thanks to his gods for watching over him and allowing him to overcome his first trial in the arena. He looked forward to the next, and was thankful for the victors purse which would no doubt make the coming days more comfortable, but in the meantime decided it was time to make some real money.

When Valentinus sips water from the dusty clay cup, he dreams of honeyed mead. While the Gaulish warrior drills in the yard of the Ludus, he dreams of sliding himself between the thighs of a noble Roman matriarch, and while the big moustachioed barbarian sits and prays to his Gods for guidance through his coming tasks, he dreams of a fearless mind, a strong arm and a sharp sword.

With a light heart and jovial manner, Valentinus sets about getting to know his 'house mates'. Any of House Avidius who frequent the yard and armoury outside formal training hours, will be subject to invitations from the humungous Gaulish warrior into dares and bets of increasingly ridiculous physical prowess. Valentinus uses comedy and sign language to make his point, despite having fluent conversational Roman. He speaks Latin only when necessary and embraces the cameraderie between those of Northern European heritage. Valentinus attempts to befriend the Veteranus Lugo - a house retinarius of similar status to Valentinus, and hopes to increase his abilities through regular sparring with his gladiatorial opposite.

Standing in the center of the ring, Decimus used his trident to remove his fallen opponents helmet and lift it high toward the heavens. The noise of all who were in attendance increased with intensity. He slowly stepped over his foe and pointed his trophy toward the crowd. That section cheered even more. He stopped and looked to the south, still holding trident in front of him. A few in the southern section clapped and waved. Decimus pointing his free hand at them and the cheers increased. With a slow rotation the helmet made its way toward the south section and all the citizens of Rome began to take notice. Pointing his trident the victor began a slow pace toward the south. The crowd cheered and some began to stand. The east and west waved with invitation for the gladiator to acknowledge them. Section by section Decimus randomly engaged the arena. The stadium seemed just as animated as if a Champion had just won a fierce battle. Finally, a section was chosen. Holding Agron's helmet high, Decimus made his way to the north section and held the helmet up to a young man in the front row. Valentinus managed a dry smile. Having been on the receiving end of more than a couple of beatings in his time, not to mention being on the defeated side in battle, he didn't recall ever 'bowing down' at any point, but it appeared his life at least had been spared so far despite that. As we (both Tullius and Valentinus) are of different Houses I imagine that the 'exchanges' above were communicated in some way after the fights below the arena - before the Gladiators returned to their respective Ludi. Needless to say there is clearly a fine rivalry brewing between the two veteran Gallus (Galli?!) and as the pair look quite evenly matched, I am sure that the powers that be shall soon give the crowd what they want.

Valentinus regarded Tullius with an assessing eye, as the Gallus from House Lucidius continued his eulogy to Roman spirit. There was no doubt of his rivals strength, but he lacked Valentinus' size and reach. The Gaulish giant merely grunted and gave silent thanks to the Hooded Spirits (The figureheads of his warrior cult), for placing such a worthy challenge on the path before him.

How is that? In any legend or tradition, the victor in a fight gets the armor and weapons of the vanquished. From the top of my head for example Hector who took Patrocles' weapons and armor. Or Hercules who took the skin of the lion he slayed.

mmyeahhh - it was a joke ;P. I'd certainly be surprised if the Lanistas and guys who actually ran the show used to let the Gladiators take possession of the kit after the scrap, - they were slaves after all. But then; I have never studied Roman history (although I've seen the exhibition of Gladiators arms and armour in the Colesium in Rome). It would be cool to be able to personalise our equipment as we achieve further success in the game.... assuming we survive :)

OOC: Is anyone still reading this thread.

Tullius got some extra whips for stepping up for his fellow gladiator. You could hear the Lanista shout:" AND ARE YOU GOING TO PAY FOR THE HELMET? WELL.. ARE YOU?"

As it were, the exploits of Decimus had caused some controversy. Some in attendance were shocked by the gall of a slave who clearly went beyond the boundaries of his roll. While others were in awe of the display of showmanship and counted the entertainment value as among the best of the day. Decimus gave Tullius a nod of appreciation for his support. Although the whip may finds its way to his back, Decimus smiled. His popularity had increased that day. Maybe his bounty would as well.

Hey all, no I haven't died of some horrible natural disaster, nor has a pack of wild camels trampled me to death. I'm alive and well, now here's my excuses...

My final semester as an undergraduate started today, and like a good son I had traveled home to visit my family and take a break from all things scholastic. All technological uses vanished as well, as I found myself actually... outside! :hide:

I plan to kickstart this story within the next day or two, I look forward to continuing this adventure with you all, if you will have me back from my unannounced hiatus.

OK. I'd sent a message to Zain, but with no response as yet. As the game has clearly stalled, I've also PM'd the moderator known as Chatois. Hopefully he can get it bump-started. I'd like to keep playing if Zain is keen to persevere, but the lack of information has left me feeling like it won't. As such, I shall withdraw from this game, so I can play others. Zain - please let us know if the game will continue at your earliest convenience.

My fellow gladiators, I am ashamed...

I feel as a host I can be pretty exceptional. Always on time, fairly entertaining write-ups, the occasional witty comment, etc... But I have ultimately failed you all by neglecting my duties and leaving you all in the dark. I apologize. :shame:

Here's the update on my life. Things got difficult to keep up with during my break at home when, while I had a lot of free time, it was spent with my family and friends. Then things got worse when I came back to University for my final semester. I didn't expect it to be this intensive...

For the time being I must cancel this game which myself and Stildawn put so much time into. There no doubt will be another start-up seeing as to how the tools are all here, but for now I must remain focused on other matters.

I apologize once again to all of you who remained excited and active, to Stildawn for working so hard on the programming, and to the moderators for creating more forum clutter. Perhaps someday soon we can resurrect this idea, which I feel could have been very successful.

Thank you all, see you soon.

Give me a nudge when you want to start it up again Zain. It certainly shows a lot of promise.

Dont stress about it too much Zain, loved do the programming for this, its something I geniunely love to do and it was a great expanding and learning experience for me to, coding in new ways, new processes and ways to handle things, would do it again in a heart beat.

In saying that the tool is there and it would be easy to jump start again. Hell with the tool as it is, it could even be a community modded game with a few tweaks lol.
