It was the year of the Mongol Invasion (their year to try at least). I was holding Khazar as the Byzantines.
Was playing my MOD to try it out.

My forces: The 5.th Byzantine Legion of Doom

2 Units of Bulgarian Brigands (with Longbows / 74 Arrows)
2 Units of Arbalesters (74 Bolts)
4 Units of Almughavars (12 Javelins)
2 Units of Byzantine Infanterie
2 Units Varangian Guard
2 Units Steppe Cavalry
1 Unit of Spearmen (reinforcements from Georgia)
1 Unit of Cataphractoi (General of Royal Blood / Command 8 )

The Mongols had 3 full stacks of Troops :

16 Units of Mongolian Heavy Cavalry
6 Units of Archers ( 74 Arrows)
6 Units of Spearmen
16 Units of Urban Militia
4 Balista Units ( 80 Balista Javelins)

It was a beatifull, midspring Morning. During my crusades of past Campaigns, I learned the advantages of what I call "Forward Defense", especialy during Battles vs. much larger Enemie forces, so I decided to deploy my forces around the half circle border of my deploymentzone. The Advantage is that the Enemy has not much room for maneuvering around without being peppered by ranged units. But you have to take care that your forces are deployed in a safe way to avoid an enemy rush. Since the Mongolians had a great amount of Cavalry I decided to deploy my Spears in the first row. The Spearmen I moved in from Georgia took the Center, both their Flanks were being held by 2 Units of Almughavars. The set up my Archer Units in the second row. Bulgarian Brigands with Longbows on the Flanks, Arbalesters in the center. 3 line was 2 Varangian Guard on the Flanks and Byzantine infanterie in the center, to reinforce the first line in close combat if needed. I placed my Steppe Cavalry on both Flanks and my General behind the Center of my Formation. As I was satisfied with my deployment I hit the "Start Battle" button and the "Pause" button immediately thereafter to take a look upon the enemies deployment. I was terryfied, horrified, petryfied 16 Units of Mongolian Heavy Cavalry deployed in a Quader directly in front of my frontranks. I realized that all they would have to do was to walk a few steps ahead and start massacaring my Men. But what did they do ?
The started moving slowly to form a long single line directly in front of my Formation. As their first Units started moving the screams of my Archer Captains hailed over the Battlefield. " TEINAR ENTENDITY "
The impact of the first volley was devestating, two units on the flanks of the enemy starting formation were hit and reduced to below 70 men. The center of the enemy formation was deployed first and took heavy losses by my ranged units, while the enemy units taking the flanks were still on their way. The enemy Center stood dead ahead of my frontrow, a bit out of range for my Javelins. Realising that the enemy Center would break against my Spearmen since the Enemy units there had been greatly decimated already (20-30 Men, including the Unit of the Enemy General), I decided to direct my Archerfire to the Enemy Flanks that havent suffered many losses yet. Also I started moving my Almugahvars to keep up the pressure on the center and to react to the enemy flanking moves. The Almugahvars moved into range and started to throw their Javelins causing heavy casualties. After the 2nd volley of Javelins 2 enemy Units in the center that already took heavy losses by my Archers routed. I ordered the 2 units of Almugahvars I had ordered into the Center to attack the remaining 2 units that had already been decimated to about 23 men each. By that time the Enemy had outflanked my Formation to the north. I moved my Kataphractoi to the right Flank to hold it since the enemy greatly outnumbered me. They started to move around my flank that was held by a unit of Almugahvars, one unit of Steppe Cavalry, my Cataphractoi and a Unit of Varangian Guard. My Almugahvars were set on hold formation and as they followed the enemy unit they had been attacking with their Javelins, they had a collision with that unit. Close combat started and the enemy charded a second unit into the flanks of my Almugahvars and started to close in with more of his units. I charded my Unit of Varangian Guard into the Flanks of the Cavalry Unit attacking the flank of my Almugahvars and also send my Cataphractoi after them. The Steppe cavalry attacked the last enemy Unit of that Flank that was trying to charge my General. After a few 20 seconds of close combat the Enemy Cavalry in close combat with my Almugahvars, the Varangian Guard and my Cataphractoi broke and routed. My Cataphractoi immediately charged to help the Steppe Cavalry that was holding its ground but recieving many casualties. I ordered the Almugahvars back into the center, since the Enemy was now advancing on the whole frontline. By that time the enemy General died, being hit by an Javelin thrown by one of my brave Almugahvars. The Enemy attack upon my left flank was quickly repelled as my ranged units took aim upon the advancing enemy and the Almugahvars that had taken the Center began to Flank the remaining enemy Cavalry on my left Flank. When the enemy Infantery arived my Forces were back in Formation. The enemy Urban Militia had no chance against my powerfull ranged Units and the Spearmen were taken down by the javelins of my Almugahvars. My Cavalry chased them off as they routed. The Field was mine.

Why, oh Why is the AI as dumb as a Toast and maneuvers around like this ?? Unbeliveable ... any child would have simply overrun my Position. I had 5 Anti Cavalry Units and one Unit of Heavy Cavalry. The Rest would have been no problem for 16 Mongolian Heavy Cavalry Units with an Genral Command 5 and the "Great Warrior" v&v.

Anyway battle was funny , from my point of view http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif .

PS: Juchu Jaret now is a Knight ... funny I thought the Character would be an Assasin http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif .
