Right playing as turkish I have been suppressing rebellions in Portugal for about 10 years now. Its teh only province I own on the Iberian pennisula & I took it with a sea invasion. I was unable to send a large army so I sent a small but very capable army. I am now cutoff from it & unable to send anymore reinforcements to it. I have been having massive revolts & 2 faction respawns in it ever since. My general was rank 6 when I sent him & he is still rank 6 & has not gained any battle vices from the constant wars. In every single battle I have been outnumbered 6-1 & more. This has happened in a number of my campaigns where generals either defending or attacking against the odds are not gaining the battle vices consistently.
Btw has anyone ever got expert last stand or expert risky attacks?

what is the difficulty level?
perhaps you're not enggaging your general in combat, which is why he's not going up in level.

Yeah sure. My Byzantine commander in Naples got the first one when he defeated the inevitable rebels with his 100 Byz inf and 12 Naphtas.
The second he got when he was cut off in rebel lands and another rebellion rose to fight his small army. Both battles had him outnumbered about 10-1.
So see it is possible to get the second Last Stand.

hey Sir Soly http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif
Expert(always) & my generals always engage in combat even if they are only a 1 man unit or urban militia(i'm careful about what they melee with). I don't think it matters if the general gets involved in melee for the battle vices such as skilled defender or skilled attacked. Btw the general in question is a 45 man unit of janissary heavy infantry with full armour upgrade & kills 300+ every single battle. This has happened a lot lately.
Another campaign as the turks I bribed william wallaz(valour 11 urban militia) he suppressed 3 big catholic rebellions & one attack by the english in Scotland. I eventually managed to bring him home & retrained him in Aragon(full weapon & armour). I then sent him off with 4 janissary HI's to Portugal where he suppressed 8+ rebellions where his army was outnumbered 10-1 everytime & he didn't get any battle vices from the 4 wars in scotland or the 8+ in Portugal.
I alos played Bohemmed's Teutonic order mod & I had a general in lithunainia who has suppressed an awful lot of revolts(double figures) & has not got any of the battle vices instead he got teh fecking vice honest http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

Actually, I've been thinking about it and I think he may in fact have the vices/virtues from the combat. The problem is he is so far away from you that you cant tell.
If you send a spy over to the Portugal to check up on him, I'll bet you find he has been accumulating vices/virtues.

I've had countless generals that have fought countless battles either attacking or defending when been massively ountnumbered & I have never been able to get past skilled last stand or skilled risky attacks.

No he dosen't as I have said I have had a lot of problems with this feature of late. At the start of my campaigns my generals have no problems accumlating battle vices but I find once I'm about 50+ years into the campaign they seem unable to gain them.
Another one about the camapign where I had william wallaz I wanted to train one of my heirs so I let the rebels(mostly pesants) take Portugal. I then sent my heir with 3 jannissary heavies & a khwarzian HC & took back Portugal with virtually no casulties. The Heir was only rank 3 & gained no battle vices from that battle when he should have gained 2 skilled attacker & skilled risky attacker.
Well insolent, as the patch readme states there is a chance the general might get a Vice or Virtue if put in these conditions. Well at least that is how I read them. It is the same as building farmupgrades, the given governor might get the Virtue Steward.

I agree. It seems to me that it is random. I have governers that pick up steward or builder after the first completed project. I also have governers who never picked up these virtues even though they have been governers just as long and have built all of the same upgrades.

I have never had a problem with govenors ganinig the steward vice so long as I build at least 2 farm upgrades. I understand a battle vice no been gained after 1 or 2 battles but some of these generals have fought 10+ in same amount of years & have not gained any battles vices

But battle vices shouldn't be random due to the way they perform in battle, if a very small army beats a massive army the general should be awarded the appropriate vices. Vices like utterly fearless shouldn't be random they should be related to they way teh general performs in battle example when he hits a certain amount of kills. The game keeps track of every single kill each man gets in a unit so it should have been implemented this way. I would like to see some of my post patch battle logs as I had some mad battles where single man unit killed 200+

Are you saying you have sent a spy over to examine the general in portugal and you still didn't see any vices/virtues? The manual says that you may have to spy on your generals to see their v&v's. You don't always get to see the v&v's, even if the general has acquired them. Sometimes you can see that he have some v&v because in battle the F1 list of morale is super low (or super high) even when you cant actually see the v&v.
I really think you should send a spy out to Portugal to see whats going on.
Dion the Spies are finding secret Vices, such as Secret Heretic. Not Vices that are completely hidden, you can see all Vice of your own generals. Further, putting a Spy on your own general makes the Spy orchestrate a trial... the feature is meant for enemy generals.
I agree that when th general reaches a certain something (amount of kills, number of retreats, how eagter to fight), he should get the Vice fitting that, like with killing prisoners and rebels. Killed 25 enemies = Great Warrior, killed 50 enemies = Mighty Warrior... ect ect
