Which faction if the most difficult to play if I start a campaign with :
-early settings ?
-high middle ages settings ?
-late middle ages settings ?

Have you tested both ?

I think that England is far more easy than France in every period. They choose their opponents while the French will have to put up with 3 major powers (Germany, England, Spain)and one minor (Aragon) and beside that there are no nearby rebel provinces for easy conquest. France does not have the luxury of special units and do not have any safe grounds (provinces protected from all sides).

I started early period with the french, normal difficulty. Withing 20 turns I had conquered all english provinces, the ones in france I took within 10 turns.
I love mercs. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif
Never seriusly tried the english though, the highlanders are a very effective suicide-but-do-much-damage unit, and the longbowmen are great for quick decimation of the enemy.
The english french provinces are surrounded by the french, I would say france is easier to play. Just don't pick a fight before you are ready.
I also managed to conquer most of HRE in two turns from my positions in eastern france.
The spaniards are usually too busy with the arabs to bother you, either they fight the Almohads, and if they win, they pick a fight with Egypt.

English are easier than Frence. But, being English myself, this is of no concern to me. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif
