Hey Guys,

You see you're in the Red, your overdrawn on Florins, and who can blame you. Crusading to the Holy Lands and then holding them is not cheap.
You've got enemies almost knocking at your doorstep at home. Give us some advice on Hack & Slash economics.

Do I want to Destroy a building? Do I want to disband some troops? Which building? What troops? What are the best little emergency actions to repair floundering finances?

Or is all already lost?

Let me know your thoughts.

Azrael

click on the florin icon in the left hand bar, this will list all territories with expensines and profit therein. trim the armies in the expensive ones.

for god's sake don't destroy your own buildings. do you have naval power? can you deploy some troops to the middle of nowhere? if so, deploy them, assault the castle then destroy all the buildings and move on to the next territory. in fact, taking any province will get you some quick cash.

before dismissing any armies, group up all your excess and send them somewhere to fight. kill them in your service, dont just send them home. there are no "best" units to dismiss.

build your bank up. if you have alot of spare cash then you can get away with a loss for a few years. the best way i have found to do this is not to use cheats(paticularly .worksundays.)

lastly, with proper trade routes set and merchants ready, the following territories are extremely profitable: flanders, lithuania, sweden, constantinople, antioch, venice(all have 3 trade goods). egypt and tripoli are also great at higher merchant levels as are 2 trade goods when the relative value of the good is high: egypt has ivory and some other rare good).

I have that very problem at the moment. Two mighty armies sitting side by side one in Constantinoble and the other in a province next door. Both were crusades. Major problems back home finances in the red. Lost all alliances with a war with Spain. I have no option but to bring my armies home. Destroyed all buildings in the foreign lands and combined the two armies together. Now on a slash and burn policy across Europe. The units are doing well..........there on their way home to be re-united with their loved ones...........AH. Finances greatly improved.

I have this kind of economics problem too. I am playing Byz. And now it is almost the end of the game. I kept most of the factions in a province each. But the troublesome Spaniard still has their control over Iberian peninsular and North Africa. They leave a huge army next door to my Egypt for almost a century. At the other end, the poor Aragonese formed a thin buffer between the Spaniard’s back door and me.

I also found that I had pumped too many troops and also hire too may machineries. To solve the problem of depleting coffer, I concentrated the excessive troops from several provinces at the Aragon bounder and also in Egypt. I think it is about 5500 in all (3000 in European bounder and 2500 in Africa). By the completion of preparation process, I was about 10000 in debt. The attack on Aragon is very easy. Their tiny army could not resist me then they withdraw to the castle. I did not bother to sack their lair but go further in to lightly defend Spanish’s provinces. There if they abandon provinces, I simply destroyed all building and get cash. On the other hand if they withdraw to the castle I sack them and then destroy all the building afterward. After get cash, I moved on the next province (don’t care if there is any rebel.).

When the Spanish tried to stop me by dispatching army from African bounder, I seized this opportunity. It seems to me that they don’t bother to keep it anyway. I pushed forward till Morocco. In Iberia, their huge army tried to catch up with my horde and some how managed to make one unsuccessful attack on me. But at last I cross bounder back to my province again via Aragon. The Spanish army could not follow me because it was allied with Aragon. In the process, I gained more provinces and reduce the size of my army. My budget was black again. Finally, I retired the depleted units and hope I shall have some money to rebuild my army and finish up the game soon.

it is a "normand knight" on the picture.
I'm from Normandy. And I agree that, especially during the 10th, 11th and 12th century Normandy was not french. But as more than 50% of the "Normand" army of Hasting (1066) was french, and because the Duke of Normandy was vassal of the King of France, ... mmm ... hard to say. After their victory they established an anglo-normand kingdom and the Duke of Normandy becomes more powerfull than the King of France. But, the french remains the langage of the noblemen in England for a long time. Ah Middle-Ages ... so complicated http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif
