I understood that under certain conditions warring states will fall into a state of peace automatically. These are, no adjacant provinces and no ships sharing the same sea area.

In my current game as the Spanish, Byzantium declared war on me and I sunk all their ships - definately none left. We are at opposite sides of the board, a long way from any touching provinces, and yet, turn after turn we remain at war.

My fleets are adjacant to Byzantium provinces - is this the answer?

Yes. Move your ships away for one turn and you'll be at peace.

if at any time you lose sight of your enemy, not with standing emmisaries and such, you revert back to neutral.

Especially important when like me in my current game, Your income dependes on trade with neutrals. If I need to conquer them, then I withdraw all my ships from their zones, to stop the war between me & the rebels. It does work only when I can't see any of their countries on the map.
