just one more thing...

is there any way of predicting when an enemy will pay ransom?

I took Brittany from the French, partly because I had it surrounded and partly because the French king was there with several nobles and I wanted the ransom (earlier in the game I'd got over 10,000 florins for the Aragonese king and some of his mates). any way, the French refused to pay the ransom, somehow the King wasn't included? not sure if he escaped or I killed him. in both cases the enemy factions only had one or two provinces left, so they couldn't have had a massive revenue. does anyone know how the AI decides to pay or not?

They don't need to save any money to pay for the ransom. They can go into debt just like you.

It`s funny when they don`t pay for their ruler. Turkey did that once in my Egyptian campaign and they had surely enough money. Seems to be the same trick John Lackland tried with Richard I.

i wish i could see how much ransom my prisonors would get and then make the decision wether to send them back home or kill them. sometimes you dont know wether you have killed the nobles or captured them.

agreed - you should at least be able to tell if your prisoner count includes any nobles. it is really annoying to spare a few hundred troops because you want to ransom the general and then find that you hadn't captured him or that he isn't worth much.

I almost wonder whether the AI chooses whether to pay the ransom based on how much they hate you. I've had wars that dragged about 100 years or so, and by about the middle, the AI just flat out refused to pay for any more troops' ransom. Might not have needed them...but you'd think they wanted those two heirs...
