Well I mean we here in Bulgaria knew it since the discovery of 6000 year old gold in burial mounds (attributed to Thracians). Now that an American is saying it, perhaps others will beleive it too.

From the look of the figurines and the use of those shells it strikes me as it was a major cultural force that only evolved into later cultures. The Cycladic Culture from circa 5200bc would appear to be something of an off shoot.

Complex area when deciding the oldest wikipedia has a very good article on the subject https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Civilization some dating as early as 9000 BC
Well civilization as a term I think encompasses complex social and cultural relations such as religion, organized rule, craftsmanship etc. Having only agriculture, animal husbandry and and some form of settlements is hardly a civilization IMO. Still, if we weren't such a poor and corrupt country I'm sure we could find fascinating discoveries.
Instead, illegal digging and desecration of archeologial sites is rampant and under the wing of a bigtime rich guy who is buying off politicians. Just in the valley of the Thracain Kings we have over 100 mounds that are waiting for proper archological work...
I'm almost tempted to say we need the English or someone to help us with this stuff.

But it's a matter of European Pride, not bulgarian pride, with all the movements of tribes, cultures and people that happened since then you can hardly claim that modern bulgarians are descendants of that ancient culture. It's a European Heritage but we really didn't need anymore proof of our inherent superiority after we colonized and subdued the entire world and then forgave ourselves by releasing them out of the goodness of our hearts.

If modern day "Macedonians" can claim to have spawned directly from the loins of Alexander the Great, then we can claim whatever the hell we want too! :laugh4:

Well, its a sad fact, but history ain't was happened, it isn't even what we think happened. Its what you can get people to believe happened. I wish it wasn't so, but it is.
