when i am playing the game, usually the first christian to attack me gets away with wageing war with me by killing my ships. so...why doesn't the pope say anything about that?
i do end up fighting back with boats, and the pope doesn't ask me to stop fighting. one would think that the pope would try to put a stop to that as well.
It might be that you have to actually conquer someones territory (and be stronger) to get the Pope to step in. I have been excomunicated, however, for continuing the war on the seas alone after the Pontiff told me to do timeout.

Same here found that one out a little while ago and was a real bugger But i have never been excom for just sea battles.
Off Topic: why do other nations attack you with their fleets when you have no land borders and they have ships around their lands???? They are not allied to any of my enemies aswell, i pose no threat and they still ruin my trade http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/frown.gif
Chunkynut,
I know what you mean. The Italians seem very territorial and will jump a lone fleet in their home waters. The Sicilians are bad too but I guess it makes sense. They risk little in the short term and deny a rival thousands of florins a turn by disrupting your trade. They rarely follow up with an all out assault and often go back to neutral if you pull back your fleets.
In my present campaign, Egypt/High/GA, I've left the Byzantines Constantinople, Nicaea, and the Balkans to waterdown the crusaders and have concentrated on reducing the Sicilians and the Italians. Sicily, Venice, Antioch, Tripoli, and Egypt makes a medium sized trade net very lucrative. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smokin.gif

usually if you sink the offending ship, and then offer a ceasefire, it works. i tend to have alot of trouble from the Sicilians with random boat aggression, and sometimes can't reach their king's island due to their excessive navy. It's only really a big problem if you're, say, England, with long, single-boat fleet stretching from the Island to the Middle East.

these sea battles i had were during a campaign in which france, italy, sicily and hungary were all breathing down my neck, and on my borders(poor little poland), so i couldn't revert back to neutral. it seems that you can attack by sea without retribution year after year, unless you got the warning because you attacked a land target first, then sea battles will get you excommunicated. sea battles are still fighting with fellow catholics, so continued attacks on your shipping lanes should get your enemies excommunicated, wether you attack a province or not.

Bothers me to no end when another nation you've been trading with for nigh on 200 years suddenly decides to attack one of your ships. Not only that, but by the time it usually happens, I have massive reserves of money, whereas their attack on me deprives them of necessary trade goods which would drive them into bankruptcy. Generally its best to get as many ships in the water as possible, overwhelm them with numbers and dedicate a few territories to getting the highest naval technologies available (though it is difficult teching up to fortress just to get the best ship)
Even though you get to Fortress, you need compass and it takes a while with Early setting. Get to fortress is not so hard: just seige it from the Byzantine http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif.

i think from now on, before establishing a trade route, i'm gonna build one big fleet of 16 ships and sail around the world destroying every ship i see.
