unfortunately it just keeps rebellions in check and loyalty up. There is no in battle effect, although i wish there was. This has been confirmed by the devs before but i can't find you a link.

Yeah... there was a long time where we asked and asked... Eventually the info was leaked, and it was a sad story indeed.

Yes it would be nice to know what dread does...
I wish the ennemy could fear a general with a high dread, because if they are captured by this guy, the worst could happen. I think it happen in history with people like Vladimir Von Drakul who was very famous for the way he kills is ennemy (the "pal" (not sure it's the same name in english and in french)). Of course his own troupe can be scared to... http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wacko.gif
I image also if a king have a high dread, people will fear is justice and then people will not revolt against him.
If someone from CA is around here, please answer http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif
Dude... It has been answered... Dread only affects loyalty of your peasants (not the unit).
The_Dude,
CA already answered this question. Dread has no effect in battle.
How much of an effect is Dread? One skull of Dread compared to, say, the "Occasional Mercy" 10% Happiness virtue you get for being nice after a rebellion?
If one skull of Dread = 10% Happiness, then it really wouldn't matter whether you killed everyone after a rebellion, or set them free...it would be the same either way, right? The only dumb choice would be to waffle and only execute the ringleaders.
My name is Azrael...
And I'm a Dreadaholic.
I love Dread. Maybe it's the skulls. Maybe it's the sound the game makes when I kill all prisoners.
As people have already mentioned, the higher the Dread, the more the people of the province will respect their governer.
Occaissional Mercy can provoke happiness amongst your population, and excessive Dread can be a bit upsetting for people.
As far as the population goes, who cares if high Dread makes them uncomfortable. They are less likely to rebel because they think you're the worst thing since Darth Vader.
However, high Dread can lead to vices, depending on the way you aquire it.
Killing all prisoners is a great way to chalk up the old Dread meter, however, it can lead to vices, such as Secret Bloodlust or Scant Mercy. This upsets your army a little, probably because they kind of know in advance they're not going to be getting any ransome money (which is silly in a way, since your treasury gets the ransom money anyway).
If you can capture and slaughter about 1000 prisoners in a single battle, you can be like one of my Generals, who has Butcher as a vice, and smile as you go to sleep at night knowing your deeds of infamy shall be remembered for generations.
Personally, I beleive that moderate to high Dread is a desireable feature in a governer.
If you take a governer with moderate to high accumen, let him lead an army into battle (win), and kill all prisoners, you can up your Dread rating, giving you a governer who offers sound financial management and can quell the desire to revolt with a raised eyebrow.
Thus, my personal advice would be to get your clever governers on a bit of a killing spree at the earliest opportunity.
Hope some of that was helpful.

That would seem to be a good strategy if it weren't for the morale hit that the troops under his command take. I guess I am kind of a morale junkie. Love hitting the F1 key and seeing all unit moral greater than 12. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

Hate to be a sour-puss, but wasn't dread explained in the
game manual? (I'd give you a page and quote, but my manual
is at my brother's house!http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

Dread can be a bit of false hope when keeping provinces under control...
A province with a high dread govenor can appear a quiet and peaceful, but if you lose that governor (assassin or battle) the the province can revolt fast...
If you have a low dread govenor and the province is loyal, that loyalty is likely to survive the loss of the govenor...
