Last night the AI actually got around to defending both bridges across a river
It made for a much more interesting and bloody battle trying to force his infantry ack and then getting my weakened unit smashed by his waiting knights :o

Pre-patch the AI defended both bridges the couple of times i was in that situation. However, on the occasions i was defending it would always come across only one bridge (making it easier obviously).

The tactical battle AI is much improved. I wish however that they would do more work with the strategy map AI, the computer retreats from provinces too much.

Interestingly I attacked a 2 bridge map and the AI chose to defend only one. The Horde attacked Muscovy and I held their entire army with 60 militia sergeants http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif
You guessed it...they attacked only one bridge. This is post patch btw

Im my opinion the AI is very stupid in bridge battles...
Alls u have to do is get cannons or pav arbs and pinn them with arrows or cannon balls. The AI seems to stand by the bridge where I can do so^.
I killed 65 men including a French King with one Demi cannon http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smokin.gif

I agree, though improved the AI still makes tactical errors defending multiple bridges. I haven't been attacked in a bridge province, post patch, yet. In my two battles they had too many ballistas, 4-5, which are more a nuisance than anything. Several catapults would have been more effective.
At least now they do move to defend both bridges.
hmm, i recently attacked accross a bridge and the A.I. split their forces for me. no bridge stopper, not even one unit. cake walk.

the MUST have unit in bridge battles has to be naptha throwers , i hated those guys until i saw the stats after a bridge battle when they stayed behind my spearmen throwing their bombs. 1 team of them killed about 180 of my enemies. Enough to turn the tides on defending or attacking on a bridge.
I have not been impressed with bridge defense AI in M:TW. Each time they deploy their army far back with one archer unit (if any) to stop my crossing. I am able to get most my army across before they decide to start moving.
The S:TW AI was far superior defending bridges. They usually set up rows of archer units just within bowshot of their side of the bridge. Then as your unit was neary across, they would activiate 2-3 units to attack that arrived just as your lead unit started to form on the far side. They would then feed in units slowly to keep you pinned in the bridgehead while their archers pincushined your troops on the bridge. Great challenge.
I always dreaded having to fight opposed river crossings in S:TW. I made sure I had the best armored troops available. I have been known to fail to win S:TW bridge attacks due to running out of troops or taking disproportionate losses. Realize, this is a good thing. Bridge assualts should be tough, especially when the defender has 2000 troops and you only have 900. In M:TW, I have yet to lose a bridge assualt (maybe 8 battles) and had a rough time only once.
Best way to beat Shogun bridges is massive overwhelming numbers, with topped out armour/weapons, lead by a great general.
Make them run at the mere rumor of your presence.
If not that then they will run at the mere sight of you.
Of course this is not foolproof, particularly if the enemy has a particularly large army and is in direstraights.
