morning all, good to see the MTW forums as busy as Shogun ever was http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

the question i have is, can you use ships to blockade the fixed sea crossings - like the one between Flanders and Wessex, Southern Spain and Algeria, Denmark and Sweden?

Playing as the English, I've got the Almohads in Spain and North Africa. I've got ships all the way around Spain, and there is no sign of any Almohad navy. The Almohads are my allies... for now...

Once I attack the Almohads through France, can I blockade Spain completely, even the fixed crossing, or will he still be able to bring in reinforcements from Africa that way?

No the lines on the campaign map are classed as a 'land bridge' so these are accessable always.

I believe someone has a mod (its their own one) that removes the land bridges and gives the english and almos a fleet to begin with(amongst other things). Quite interesting gameplay i'd imagine.

thanks chunkynut.

guess its time for plan B... take and hold the territory around Gibraltar to cut the land bridge, establish a blockade, then invent the Club 18-30 Crusader tour and large it all the way to Benidorm

oh we're all off to sunny Spain, a viva espagna

is plan b a crusade to cordoba, effectively controling the northend of the land bridge?

well I haven't had chance to try crusades yet, and as the Elmos decided to attack me last night and cut my sea lanes, I'm not sure now. I was thinking more of a sea assault against the south eastern tip of spain (if that's Cordoba) then linking up with a land-based push from France. Trouble is, that leaves the men in southern spain getting attacked from Spain and North Africa until the Elmos are beaten back.

I'll save the queries about crusades until I've had chance to experiment, but they sound a bit flakey - question is, would you recommend it?

you don't need ships to move across the "connected" lands like Morocco to Granada, so having sea superiority in that ocean section won't block troops from moving between the two, only enemy units coming to them via sea-lane connected ports from somewhere else.

if you have a clear sea route to drop an aproximately three army crusade at the halfway point of his lands, (or however many armies you think you might need) and enough armies to hold the point into your lands, you can effectively hold at his half way point. then march your extra armies back toward your lands as you advance your home front into his. effectively squeezeing him out of half his lands.

ps, if you can, find out where he can build his jihads and take them out.

pps, the reason why cordoba (i think that's the name of it)is best, is because it's next to portugal. anyone who has played spain or the elmos can tell you portugal is a pain in the but, so it will cause him problems if he brings in reinforcements from there.

or you can try the mod i just uploaded to the .org which completely eliminates ALL land bridges. no more jesus walking the english channel or denmark to sweden or morocco to ganada and cordoba or sardinia to corsica or naples to sicily.....all gone

i dont know when they'll have it processed for download, but i stuck it up there today. makes playing the english or almohads or danish quite a bit different.

imho the best is to retain the bridges but make the passage blockable from enemy fleet. I mean that you don't have to have a fleet to pass your army from Flanders to Wessex, you can do it with small *one use* boats but if there is an enemy present, then you should not be able to manage it. Also another feature would be that a lost battle after passing a bridged province should result in the total destruction of the invadors army.
