Ok so I am making a separate thread because maybe some people who might want to donate towards the plaque and the charity might not be following the main thread which is stickied.

So basically we are making a stainless steel (to resist the harsh Norwegian weather) memorial plaque (http://www.plaquemaker.com/stainless-steel-sign-8x10?sc=2&category=182825) to put by his grave (which I will do when I visit in early February. I would like to get all donations in by the end of this week, latest next week.

The sign costs $50, which we have gotten pretty close to covering with the few donations Ive gotten so far, so the remainder of whatever we get to the Strømme Foundation (https://strommestiftelsen.no/english). To quote their website, they are a "Norwegian rights based development organization helping poor people in the global South climb out of poverty through microfinance and education." HoreTore (Erik) was an educator, and went to Africa for a few months a while back to teach there so I think he would really like people donating to this foundation.

As for the text, the current draft looks like this:

14800

If you have any more suggestions, please dont hesitate to put them here.

If you can donate via paypal, PM me and I will give you the information. If not, we can figure something out.

Many thanks!

So are people happy with the wording for the plaque? We now have more than enough donations and I will go ahead with ordering it if there are no objections.

Can we not get it cast in Bronze?

I only ask because I'm dubious of the ability of even stainless steel to last, though I suppose bronze might shatter in the cold.

I like the quote, is that actually how he wrote it?

I asked the company which we will order it from and they said that stainless steel should last, though I guess we could do titanium? Though its much more expensive.

And yes that is his quote about crying on the pitch, its in his signature.

Ok so we actually now have a decently large amount of donations which is awesome, over $170 at least (since some cannot do paypal, they will be donating to the charity directly).

So my question is, do we want to upgrade our plaque to one which is a bit thicker (.125" or 3.175 mm) compared to the cheaper one which is only .0250" or 0.635 mm. On one hand the thinner one is cheaper but its also really thin and might not withstand the harsh Norwegian elements for too long (or it might, Im not sure). On the other hand, the thicker one is twice as expensive, $100.

Thoughts?

His signature feels out of place somehow. It may seem weird or disrespectful to anyone outside the Org. I'd leave it out, personally.

Admittedly, the context does make the quote more powerful, as if we're suggesting they were his last words on the football pitch of life.

I will go with the consensus in this thread. Personally I like it, I dont think anyone would get offended by it as it is a quote we are remembering him by. People will understand.

I still like "All men are greater than dead men".

Meh, that one seems too solemn for the kind of person HoreTore was.

I like the "crying on the pitch" thing... It's very "him", and no, I don't think his relatives would take offense...

It's a personal gesture, people will get that.

BTW, cheers Hooahguy for the effort :)

Alright so I got a rough draft from the plaque maker:

Any final thoughts before I purchase it? I wasnt able to put his avatar on it, the low resolution made it not look very good so I decided to scrap it.

Alright so I submitted the order. I ended up going with the thicker metal and I will pay the extra $50, its a small price to pay for more durability. I will take a picture when it arrives, probably in about 2 weeks.

A very nice gesture Hooahguy, exemplifies how the Org really is. Kudos to you.
