Pronunciation of Arquebusiers

[Koga No Goshi]

I have seen every possible shorthand, nickname, and heard every possible pronunciation of this word. They were all different, lol.

I've heard Busies, Argos, Arks, "ghetto muskets", "the cheap guns", Tenki's own beloved WarPriest even calls them "Aqua Busters!!!!" on our clan Roger Wilco channel.
So does anyone know the correct pronunciation? Since the word comes from Portuguese or Spanish (I assume), I always thought it was

ar-kay-boose (arquebus)
ar-kay-boo-zee-ers (arquebusiers)

Anyone know for sure?

I may be wrong, but I believe both the words arquebus and arquebusier have French roots (like grenade and grenadier). Given that, I would venture to say that the pronunciation I favor the most is something like:

ar(as in 'you are')-kuh(as in 'duh')-bus(as in the vehicle)...and arquebusier, being the same, plus the sound at the end of grenadier.


But, just to be sure, I just decided to find an online dictionary that pronounces it.

The American Heritage Dictionary (http://www.bartleby.com/61/50/A0435000.html) has an entry for Arquebus...and I'm not too far off, although the word is truly rooted in old Dutch, but by way of French. They don't like arquebusier, but I feel my grenade-grenadier comparison is valid.

I just read in the Encylopaedia Nipponica that arquebusiers are pronounced as follows:

ARC-DE-BRA-ZEERS

Ya'see, the 'U' is pronounced as a 'D' when following a C or Q, but is pronounced as 'RA' when following a 'B'. These rules are only for the verbal expression, but excluded from the caligraphic manifestation.

Don't complain to me! Complain to the Dutch/French, who came up with their accents...

I think I might have coined ghetto muskets... I was on Roger Wilco with my clan in an allied game and when I saw the opponent facing off against me, I saw he had three arque's to my three muskets, and I said on Roger Wilco "maaaaan.... he didn't even bring muskets, he brought GHETTO muskets! Does he think I'm that incompetent!?"

Anyway, I figured arquebusier would be pronounced "ark-e-bu-si-ay". Because French is weird like that, and the term came into use by way of France, so that ought to be the proper pronunciation. I'd think, anyway.

many friend words are incorporated into the English language and more often than not they lose their french pronunciation

arquebus is pronuonce either:

are=keh=bus or
ark=bus

its a matter of personal preference
