I'm aware this has probably already been answered, but my searches didn't turn anything up on the forums.

Is there any way to upgrade a unit? Like, say you have a good unit of Spearmen from the early game and now Feudal Sergeants are available....it seems like a waste to relegate this unit to garrison duty or disband it. Could you upgrade it to FS?

Same goes for generals. I have a wonderful general in my game, but he's urban militia. I'd love to spend some money to at least give him a cavalry entourage.

No, you can't.

Even though it's called retraining, it only refills and/or upgrades the unit.

Oh I thought this thread said final question. (j/k) http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Anyway, it's unfortunate that soldiers can't be upgraded, or generals and their units be changed over to different and/or better units as the game progresses. But that is the way of things People have complained of how unrealistic it is to have kings that die but generals that stay young forever; making good generals/heirs' units/ etc. obsolete for later-age combat may be a way of helping to balance that.

Hey Guys,

Now that raises an interesting idea.

What if there were certain "high value" units in the game that could only be aquired through experienced soldiership?

i.e. once a Unit acheives a certain amount of kills or battle experience, you have the option of upgrading them to a sort of "elite" type force.

Just an idea that popped in my head when I read this thread. Don't really think it's a realistic patcheable feature.

Add on perhaps?

What would actually be interesting is that the better a unit becomes (gains Valor, etc.) it increases in upkeep price.
A leading unit (General) of a banner would also cost more or less depending on select V&Vs.
That might be doable.

Azrael,

Is that not represented by Valour??

although feudal seargants are good, spearmen can still hold their own against most cavalry types.upgrade their armour and attack if you really want to make use of them..
