Aaanddddd here we go!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=blAIH_mYvIk

According to the latest Rally Point, our beloved Medieval Total War is coming to Steam.

That means no more video card problems and dozens of fixes, plus you can have it alongside your other Total War games. Plus, more players to this incredible game, hopefully the MP will work out as well.
Woo woo woo :bounce:

If they have fixed the problems with the video cards and newer OSes, this is really something to celebrate!

I wonder how the Steam version will work with mods...

I also wonder how multiplayer will work. STW/MTW were more about MP battles (and player clans) than the later titles.

I suppose that's better then nothing; Steam sucks. I'd been much happier if they went with GOG.

Technically, it should allow the MP scene to play on hosted servers, given that the game is now reworked for the modern video cards and Steam.

Yeah, I definitely noticed that bit when I was watching the video. (I thought I was hallucinating at first!) Definitely outstanding news! :2thumbsup:

Indeed. I really hope they have; that would be simply fantastic!

That was my other main question/concern as well (other than the compatibility with modern machines/OS's). Here's hopin'!

I'm not so sure about that,as I've been trying to get a clear answer from them on that regard on the Total War official forums, and they haven't replied to my question/s as of yet. I'd like to think they know better to release a game in this condition but after Rome 2, I'm doubtful let's just say.

Apparently, Medieval TW will get Windows 7 & 8 compatibility, along with large screen usage (16:9 and 4:3) and some form of MP through LAN.

Ah. My inept google skills can only find Med II links, an old totalwar.com thread, and this thread. It would be nice to see something official.

It was posted on reddit by Nico, unfortunately because this is a new account I can't link it yet, but searching for this quote + Last Roman Campaign pack should turn up the reddit thread.

Both games will now support wide-screen, high resolution (16:9 & 4:3), Windows 7 & 8 if purchased through Steam.

There hasn't been much information the last few days, so I just hope everything works later today ;-)

Purchased. The old version runs for me, but for $10 I can switch machines on travel without worrying about graphics cards and such. Work isn't leaving me much time now, but I'll start looking into installing mods onto the Steam version soon.

Could someone who has already bought the new steam version make some tests and write a short review? I wanted to buy it but screenshots like this (http://cdn.akamai.steamstatic.com/steam/apps/345260/ss_34a268d07d1ea398e8904ee1594f3d19fdc3f659.600x338.jpg?t=1435251514) tell me that not all problems were fixed for the steam release. I wonder if there are more of them left.

Steam does have a reasonable return policy. You have 14 days from purchase, as long as you don't play the game for more than 2 hours.,

I got that problem from time to time with the CD version. I could always fix it by:

1: Pause

2: Group some units, even if I didn't want them together

3: Return the Grouping setup to how I liked it

4: Unpause

So it might be a MTW problem rather than a steam problem.

I'd like to know that as well, and also,is modding it on steam easy? As I've had problems with other games in the past on this matter. In the Old one I could load up Gnome Editor and change the units as I felt fit,but this may not be the case if it's on Steam.

I modded out peasants and ballista without any problems, so you can edit game files and run. Not sure how to manage multiple mods, maybe just do the same as non-Steam, except you would need to copy the desired mod into your Steam dir before running?

I know that trick but I expected they put a little more interest in fixing basic game bugs, not only resolution/system problems. Would be nice to get some kind of MTW Enhanced Edition.

Or we could hope that they release the basic game code now that they have said they don't intend to update MTW anymore for for the future maybe? After all if we had that, I'd guess that modders could at least take a try at fixing some of these bugs.

No, it will get installed in your Steam apps directory. You can have both versions ready to go.

So far so good
Campaign running smoothly. One CTD; I had left the game for a little over an hour (smoking and making coffee) game crashed when I went to do a hard save.
No complaints so far, perhaps I will have the original game discs bronzed and erect a shrine

Yeah, the only issue I've noticed so far is that the game freezes/crashes if left running with no activity for long periods of time -- say, 45 minutes or more. Otherwise, I've not had any problems yet. :2thumbsup:

It is - my MTW ( +VI ) Gold Edition does this now and then ( and I use the same fix ), and I don't have Steam !!

The problem Stazi displayed still happens even with the steam version.
I have only seen it happen when I switch to desktop from a battle screen and come back.
Just group and ungroup 2 units (any two units) and the display should fill out.

Well, it was too good to be true.
MTW from steam was working as good as the disc installation.
I was playing it earlier, shut it down to do some browsing. When I came back to continue conquering the world: (app already running) Cannot access Steam
Blah!

Just a wee word of advice to anyone with the Steam version, don't upgrade to Windows 10.

It was working fine for me on 8.1, after upgrading building and unit construction queues in settlements only open in Windows XP compatibility mode, and unit tabs and a few others won't open at all.

I can't find any way around it, did find one person claiming he got it working in 800x600 resolution, made no difference for me.

I got my old installation of XL mod to work using the Steam version like this:

1. Installed MTW from Steam into the Steam folder
2. Copied the entire folder containing XL mod from my old computer into a separate folder (not Steam) on my newer computer
3. Copy/pasted the Medieval_TW.exe file from the Steam folder into the folder containing XL mod, replacing the old .exe file with the same name
4. Started the game. IT WORKS! And with all the high resolution stuff and I haven't detected any bugs, though I haven't played long periods yet

I also got the "cheat lines" to work by creating a shortcut onto my desktop and added the -ian and -strictserver lines there.

When Win10 first came out, I don't think the Steam version worked with it. That may have changed since, but I haven't heard that is does work, and cannot verify it personally.

How has it been going since this post? I'm thinking I'll need to try getting it from Steam as I was rather annoyed after yesterdays efforts;

In an attempt to free up some space on my c: (Win7) , I thought I'd move MTW and MTW2 to another drive. I had last played MTW and MTWXL probably two years ago. I uninstalled them and then couldn't find one of the original install disks. I then found another unused set of disks from a RTW combo pack that my brother or I bought at some point. Installed but no dice. Tried back in c: and no dice either. Annoyed. It used to work. I've tried compatibility options and as admin (an error I get is "Please login with administrator privileges and try again") which prompted me to have a look for that issue mid post and it seems that it's related to a Windows update (https://forums.totalwar.com/discussion/162617/please-login-with-administrator-privileges-and-try-again-error). I think I'll try removing / disabling it and see how I go - and it's a success.

Anyway, I'd want to play MTW, VI and MTWXL so given that the Steam version is so cheap, I figured it might be worth while trying. There's quite a few comments that it's not worth getting, probably due to the CTD? I only experienced that a few times and it wasn't necessarily repeatable.

Steam version (2.01 PE) is even more affordable than original MTWVI 2.01
I've tried to run with a simple mod (Peasants stats, unit choice of AI, all mounted units dismount, playable Novgos, 2 more units in original unit file and some graphics of frontend menu) and it runs greatly.
XL mod Tyberius patch runs fine too; don't dare to launch my Hyborian age mod, not yet.
All supported resolution of AMD Radeon R7 370 (from 1440x900 to full HD 1920x1080) successfully tested
That machine washed info panel, change it with the one of Tyberius mod

Camera moving speed (campaign map) is increased significantly too, especially, late game when there are hundreds of stacks on the map. Original version can still cripple even strongest GPUs.

I wonder if an expansion(or small dlc rather) would be commercially successful.

Well, the Vikings Invasion expansion pack is included, so that's a good thing.

DLC for a 14 year old game... unfortunately that won't happen.
