I posted this under the HRE hints but I thought it was worth repeating for others:

Also, another hint based upon a bad, bad experience which seems more so with the HRE than other factions I have played:

Constantly check your generals/heirs' loyalty. I had a civil war break out, rebels with 2,000 troops, 2 provinces, while the king had 10,000 troops, all the other provinces. I think, ok, I'll take the king, I can handle this. Bah

One turn later, ANOTHER civil war breaks out The loyal forces split again, 50/50. I'm doomed at that point . . .

Reloaded, tried to figure out what happened. Well, duh The king had three sons, one with two loyalty shield, two sons with NO shields. They were civil wars just waiting to happen - and that is exactly what happened So, as Emperor, I now keep, as they say, my enemies close to me

Just for the record, it doesn't always work keeping them close. I had a disloyal heir in my kings stack once, and he still rebelled. It was only his unit that rebelled along with the unit I had coming out of the training queue.

I think he meant close as in "within reach of my assassins" http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

two things to pay attention to with loylty to really pay close attention to. Basically don't lose battles, but when you do ALWAYS ransom the troops back if you have the money, even if they are two useless peasants. also don't kill too many captives, your generals missing out on ransoms can seriously annoy them. I played an egyptian game once and didn't follow these rules, pretty soon everyone had no loyalty and i was getting warnings and rebelions all the time. Follow them and even merc. & bribed generals will become fully loyal in time.

The only good civil war is the one that happens to your neighbor allowing you to sweep in and "restore order" by relieving him of his troublesome provinces.

Wouldn't it be cool if the rebels of a civil war where factions? eg a Byzantines have a civil war. The rebels are called "Byzantine Rebels" or something historical like "Venetoi" or "Ikonolatres" and are a faction with the opposite colours of the actual Byzantines.
