I've noticed that post-patch the Almohads have it written as "enslave" captives, instead of execute them.
Anyone seen this? Is it just for the Moslem factions or does it say it for Catholic/Orthodox ones, too?
I can't recall specifically for the Almohads but both pre and post patch my recollection is that Moslem factions had the option to enslaved some or all and Christians could kill some or all of their pows after a rebellion.

pithorr,
what this mostly affects is the dread rating for the general in charge and perhaps his v&v's, one way or the other depending on how you handled it.

Another useless option...

It is not a useless option ;-/
Your decision affects how your faction leader is perceived by the population and by your other generals.
Execute everyone and it'll come back to haunt you in the long run, is my experience of it.

If you kill captives during a battle it gives the v&v "Scant Mercy" to your comanding general. This gives 1 dread and is a good thing. If this same general continues to kill'em all it adds a negaative v&v (don't remember name)that lowers morale because there's no ransom to split among the troops.
When you retake a captured province and get the three options to release all, execute ring leaders, execute all (Moslem factions substitute enslave for execute)its the faction leader that gets the results of your decision not the comanding general. The middle choice has no impact while the the other two add to your leader's dread or the populations happiness. I think the first kill'em all decision gives your leader the "Swift Justice" v&v but I don't recall the mercy one but like I said it probably gives him a plus 10% on population happiness. The more you do one or the other the greater the impact on the populace.

but if you continue to massacre your prisnors evetually you will get the butcher v&v which is actually quite handy.
Butcher
He is famous for the massacre of thousands of prisoners in a single battle. Few can match the horror of this deed. +2 Dread.
note the no negative vices http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif
so the trick is not to kill a few but to slaughter thousands and then there is no morale penalty only good stuff

Wrong.
Butcher is obtained by killing 1000 prisoners in one battle. Keep killing prisoners and you get Scant Mercy, followed by No Mercy (I think). (It might be Swift Justice, sorry, been a while since I played a campaign.)
The first one is +1 Dread, the second is +1 Dread, -1 morale (a bad thing).

From what has been posted before and from my own experience:
Execute/Enslave All;
Scant Mercy (i think) but definatly +1 dread.
Execute Ringleaders;
Neutral (no change to anything(it seems))
Release All;
Mercy (i think, cant remember the names only the change in stats) +10 Happiness
So if a teritory rebels twice do the Execute All then Release all (or visa versa) and you gain the to stats increase (both good for holding down rebellions) and then do the execute ringleaders if you have anymore trouble http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif
Edit: Forgot to add, this then makes your gen better at stopping future rebellions and we know how useful this is in the later game

when dealing with my heirs and king i tend to do the following. With an heir in battle, in his first battle that he captures 1000+ i will kill them all to get +3 dread from scant mercy and butcher, there is no moral hit with this. For my king, the first time he has the oppertunity to kill a lot of rebels i will take it to get +1 dread with no penalties. After these bonuses that will give natuaral dread advantages to offspring i let battle captured prisoners live and either kill ringleaders or let everyone go. Seems that if you show what a mercyless git you are the once everyone will respect you for it for a lifetime and beyond.
The opposite of course works if you want the happyness bonus from releasing everyone the first time you get the option. I tend to go for the ones that improve dread overall because i think these dread additions can be passed on and so long as you don't go too far you will get no morale or happyness penalties.
Having said all of that the gentle knight +3 t morale is indesensible if you can get it, but i'm not sure it works too well at the moment, i would assume you get it from not killing prisoners in battle but i've picked up butcher and chivilrous in the same battle before so go figure?
I prefer not to execute anyone.
Gives you stuff like mercy and occasional mercy.
Plus every now and then you get loads of money for the captives.
My experience is that not executing rebels seems to help with preventing further rebellions.
I don't think that dread is really that good a thing. It helps keep a province from rebelling but your own men are gonna be scared of him.

In hardly ever execute a captives from another faction unless i'm working to that 1 time butcher bonus. Having said that sometime it is a good idea to reduce the number of men your enemy can field if it will take a while to replace losses.

I would have thought it would be beneficial to release rebels or troops of factions of your religion and slaughter other who are not. Example, I'm playing Spain, and generally allow all christian catives to live.. yet I slaughter without mercy the almohad trrops I capture, seeing as I'm in quite the war with them right now. However, I'm pickin' up the bad vices despite the fact my poputlation should be more than happy I'm ridding them of these dogs..

I've been using a "climb the ladder" approach: 1st rebellion, shame on me for losing track of province loyalty (free them all); 2nd rebellion, same prov, ringleaders go; if there's a 3rd (usually places like Portugal & Livonia) everybody gets the axe.
I've actually said out loud: "Don't MAKE Daddy come up there" http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

ROFL. I was going to suggest that people roleplayed it instead of calculating the math of it all, but then I read Kukri's post and went off the whole idea.

I do almost the exact same thing that Kukri does. I've never said "Dont make Daddy come up there" though. Its usually more along the lines of "If I have to come back here one more time, you will all be in BIG trouble."
As for execution/enslavement, in rebellions, I usually execute the ringleaders, or, if they really pissed me off, I kill'em all. The only time I let them all go is if its a longtime province of my empire, because the people there deserve SOME kind of seniority award. With other factions, if I'm going for only one or two provinces, I let the prisoners live. If its an all out war, or if they attacked me first, every PoW gets the axe.

For battles against factions I only execute the prisoners when u capture a lot of good troops or a good general that I don't want to face again. I do normally try to give all my good generals the vice scant mercy & butcher as it looks nice on the parchment to see maxed out command & dread. for rebellions it depends on what state my empire is in. Btw a lot of the time the enemy factions will refuse to pay the ransom anyway so no point in getting morale penalties when you can make the opposing faction have or start the beginnigs of a civil war instead http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

This really depends on the situation. If I`m fighting a huge empire with hordes of troops, I`m not going to ransom a single peasant to them. They need to lose as many men as inhumanly possible http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/mad.gif
Otherwise I usually go for the money and play nice with people. No need to execute lots of stupid peasants, they usually believe you`re a nice guy if you release them.
Sol,
IIRC, from the original release: "Enslave" option is for Muslim and "Execute" option is for Christian. I don't know about Orthodox, but my guess is its the same as Christian.

i Always slaughter the captives during the battles unless i capture a faction leader and need money. people who throw their weapons and allowed to be captured instead of fighting for their country are cowards and they dont deserve mercy. as the Spartans used to say 'be brought back dead carried on your shield or come back carrying it with you" , 'ripsaspeis' (ancient greek term meaning shield throwers= cowards in battle) are not to be spared.
Ok, from executing prisners you get these V&Vs:
Scant Mercy: +1 Dread
No Mercy: +2 Dread, -1 Morale
Merciless: +2 Dread, -2 Morale
Secret Bloodlover: +3 Dread
Bloodlover: +3 Dread, -3 Morale, -2 Peity
Dependant on number of prisoners execute in one battle.
Butcher: +2 Dread
Vices or Virtues from rebellions:
Occational Mercy: +10 happiness
Frequent Mercy: +20 happiness, -1 Dread (this one is worth it from the loyalty point of view)
Merciful: +20 happiness, -2 Dread
Most Merciful: +20 happiness, -3 Dread
Swift Justice: +1 Dread
Secret Rough Justice: +1 Dread
Rough Justice: +2 Dread, -10 happiness
Tough Justice: +3 Dread, -10 happiness
Secret Random Justice: +3 Dread, -20 happiness
Random Justice: +3 Dread, -50 happiness (ouch!http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif
It seems that if you have merc troops in your forces that you are able to keep them relatively loyal by choosing to release everyone. I have kept merc troops at around level 4 loyalty for a long time by employing this tactic. The steady flow of florins that results from releasing everyone is most likely responsible.

If you keep killing prisoners as in 'all of them' it goes from Scant mercy, to blood lover to butcher. this sky rockets your general's Dread which can be a good and bad thing. If he is governing it means his populace will be extremely loyal. But if he suddenly decides not to be v loyal to your King/Leader he may be chosen as the Ring-leader of a Rebel faction. Also the more murderous he is the less morale boost your troops get as they get annoyed at him not letting them share in the ransom money...
