Valour's importance

An army of units with very high valour (8 or higher) can win any batttle even if it is heavily outnumbered.

Yesterday I got a 11th - valour general. He does miracles.
I play as Byz. and yesterday I got a king's son with initial 10th valour. I sent him with an army of 1600 men to reconquest Bulgaria from Golden Orde. They had there 2600 men, mainly archers, mongol warriors and steppe cavalry. The fight was very tough. In the key time I attacked with my general (40 kataphractoi) mongol warriors after they smashed my Byz cav. My general made them rout easily and victory was very close. But mongols sent reinforcements - 6 units of steppe cavalry (240 men at all). My general with rest 26 men was surrounded. I thought I lost the battle and such a great general. But he won He got 11th valour and was killing enemies by tens.
I was very suprised. My general lost only 10 men but killed more than 300 enemies and captured 100. Unfortunately he is the king's son and will become king soon, though there is a little chance that he'll lose his royal status and become a general. That would be very nice.

You know, I've never had a general w/ valour that high who didn't wind up being a King. If your empire is small enough you should still use him in battles (w/ appropriate saving of course http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif ) and find out how well he'd fare against other tough units. I mean, steppe cavalry have some positives, but Kataphractoi can usually tear them up, you know? It'd be interesting to see how he'd do against, say, feudal sargeants or nubian spearmen/AUM.

Just a thought.

You know I've already checked this out. Along with steppe cav. my general was attacked by mongol heavy cavalry. That was enemy's general. And 26 kataphaktoi smashed 40 heavy cavalrymen.
After the patch spearmen, feudal sergeants etc become weaker. And kat's charge and attack make them rout.
I am realist and i will never launch a frontal attack of feuds or hihger spear infantry with cavalry. Even if I win my casualities will be rather heavy. But an attack of any other enemy units by such an extraordinary cavalry as 11th valour kataphractoi has devastating effect.

I think valour has a bit too high influence. In my recent campaign the byz have a lot of high valour varangians and they are nearly invincible They eat chiv foot knights and feudal knights in full charge for breakfast and fight till the last men (and this is mostly the last opponent&#33http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif. I`ll be glad when he can`t any longer produce them.

yes, high valour units are a pain is close combat. I had a French king and 200 troops kicking my butt (and I had 600 defending a bridge&#33http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif because he had insane valour bonuses

Only one way to kill them fast : arrows.

I just played a battle last night as Turks fighting Byz in Nicea (I had finally after about 100 years managed to push them out of Trebizond).
The war we had fought had taxed us greatly and there were only about 500 Byz troops and I attacked with 700. I was so sure of victory as there were only two scary units, a Byz Inf and a depleted Kataphraktoi, the rest was Spearmen and Urban Militia.

To my utter disgust, my troops were all defeated by this force. I lost about 500 troops and they lost 150. This was under the command of my best general, but then I noticed the Byz general (I knew he was good) he first off had 9 stars and was a skilled defender. But the scary Byz Inf had no less than 7( ) Valours because it had a commander who had a Secret Pride. DAMN No wonder my Armenians completely failed against them.

i have been playing the turks in early period, and it is now 1130 and i have a gen (he was a prince but his brother got the throne so he is now my best gen) who has valour 10 and his troops all have 5 or 6 i have a mix or muhwahids and ghazi and thats it and i have used this stack from the start of the game and now it is unstoppable i have defeated the byz,egytians,almos and when i get into trouble i just march my shock troops over and as soon as my ghazis and muha charge the enemies leg it http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/joker.gif sometimes if there a high honour they fight a bit but once my extremely fast troops get round the back and charge they soon run.. i cant wait to see how i fair gainst the western europeans as i aint made a move on them yet http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif
