Hi, I'm new to shogun, just bought the game 3 days ago, and I must say it is a superb piece of work! I just have a few questions which I hope somebody would be nice enough to answer:
1. Can your regiments replenish their numbers? What I mean is, often the units I use to spearhead my attacks are hit down to less than 20 men. Can I rebuild their numbers?
2. How do you get into a castle battle? I've seen screenies and also the intro video in which you see armies surrounding a castle, yet I've never been able to get that to happen! All I do is wait a few months and the castle falls anyways!
Thanks in advance!
You can combine units within an army by left clicking and holding on a unit in the army unit display at the bottom, and dragging and dropping it on another unit of the same type. The combined unit cannot have more than the number of men in a new unit. If so, the units will not combine. You can also move units to another army in the same province by dragging them up to the strategic map, and dropping them on an army icon. When doing this, align the small white dot on the base of the army piece you are moving with part of the army piece you are trying to enter. The destination army cannot be one that has moved into the province on the same turn. You can also start a new army by simply dropping the unit on the province.
Dropping an army on a castle will initiate a castle battle. Once again, align the small white dot on the army piece base with the castle on the map.
I'm going back 10 month from memory here. If any of this is wrong, I'm sure someone will correct me.

I must agree with EuroSan that 120 men unit is like an addiction. Once you got into it you won't want to fight 60 men unit anymore http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/wink.gif
I like fighting with 60 soldiers. Flanking is easier IMHO

Most of my campaigns are 120 man unit and sometimes 60 but I never used the 80 or 100 unit configuration.

things to point out...
by combining units, you can delete a ranked general, so be careful. to avoid this pick up the unit with the good general, and drop it on top of a rank zero general's unit.
about honor of the units that your combining. the computer keeps track of the number of kills every soldier has (this determines that soldier's honor) these honors are averaged for the unit and that is the number displayed in the flag. now as you combine units, the unit honor may change, but since its an average your not losing anything like you would with the generals.
it is pretty important that you defeat those soldiers locked away in the castle. if you let the castle fall on its own, the castle will be downgraded. that means you will have to spend your own koku to restore it along with any buildings the downgrade took with it (ex. you will lose the expensive port, if you let a small castle fall).
LightningSaint, 120 man units is the way to go in a campaign. Bigger IS better. You must think ahead because the units take 2 turns to build and that prolongs the game and demands more careful planning. Turn the timer off too so you're not rushed. A taisho had all day to fight.
Try to capture the castles by assault before winter to receive the year's koku. Helps defer the cost of the campaign!
I don't think ports and rice paddy improvements are effected when captured.

RE combining units: I thought the "lose a general" thing was fixed in the last patch??? My (patched) experience is that a general is now only hidden/obscured until you drop that unit onto the map. At that point the high-honor general reappears. Something else not yet mentioned in this thread is that you can get a "free upgrade" by combining a partial unit with one of the same troop type having better armor and weapons. The guys just added to the unit somehow acquire the better equipment.
