I've had this happen to me several times- "the pope grants you 1000 florins for blah blah blah". Playing as the spanish, This has happened fairly often, but with other factions, it only happens in the first few years, if at all. What I want to know is, what are the exact conditions for this to happen?

But as England in the early game, you can also get several donations from the Pope for doing absolutely nothing. Dries up pretty quickly, though. One theory was that he favours the poorest Catholic nation (in terms of bank balance), but I am not sure I buy that.

actually as danes he showered me every turn, guess he actually helps the poor factions tooi wonder why he won't help muslims when they save his ass?i mean in one game he was under HRE threat and so i took the chance to help him(turks),after that he announced a crusade against meand guess what?the HRE were the crusaders

I stated getting money from the pope when i was converting loads of people with my bishops and had 10 inquisitors sat in europe buring everyone. I think he likes you to spread the faith and so increase his influence, without hurting your fellow christians. Also imporving you and your generals piety with 0 star inquisitors will help you get in good terms and improve the faith of your people.

i believe it is somewhat random but i noticed i got tons of money from the pope by playing Poland without attacking someone.

Well, sometimes it`s understandable:
I got excommunicated and soon after the pope died in a terrible accident (well, we`re in Italy, accidents happen http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif ). A few years later the new pope gave me 1000 florins. I thanked him very nicely and put them to my other 1500000 florins. That pope still lives 30 years later. Coincidence?

i think he gives you money after you complete goals that he has. if he calls for a crusade against the egyptians and you go on it, he charges you, but if you complete the goal before he ceases hostilities with them, he throws some bling your way

i'm pretty sure you get money from the pope any time you further the cause of catholism, no matter how you do it.
My hypothesis is that the Pope has you on a "goodCatholicometer". If you are at 0 or (+) then he might give you $. At the beginning of the game, if e.g. you're English, your provinces have a high releative belief in the Pope's religon and you have a good number of bishops per province you own. You have also attacked no one at the beginning, so you have not made him unhappy. To make him unhappy, be in a war with any other Catholic province, capture provinces that lower your overall provinces' catholocism average score, or otherwise move to the (-) side of the goodCatholicometer. Attacking the e.g. HRE when he does not like them moves you to the + and anytime you attack the Polish pretty much that's a (--). This theory explains why you get $ at the beginning but also later when you might be rich, so that it can't simply be explained by charity. Just my best guess, etc.
New Pope, resets goodCatholicometer.

Ichabod,
While that is a well thought out theory, if it were true the Pope would be showering me with florins for the job I've done in Eastern Europe/Northern Asia. I took out the Novgorods and converted all of those northern provinces (from Finland to whatever one has two names with a - in the middle) to 90%+ catholicism and no rewards. And its a new pope...I have seen to that...several times as a matter of fact http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smokin.gif

i know in history, the pope paid the spanish for every english ship spain sunk,(back when the english were becomeing protestants), so it's got to be based on the historical notion that the pope paid various kings to wage war with the enemies of catholicism.

I've started as HRE (early, hard) and got 1000 florins for 2 turns running, just for sitting still. No bishops either.

Nah, I think that must be a coincidence. I'm in my first ever campaign, so pardon my inexperience, but I've built more churches than was strictly necessary, I've built dozens of bishops, have boosted Catholicism in a number of Muslim/Orthodox regions and sent off a few Crusades. As the English, I've had just ONE donation from the Pope and that was probably in the first turn of the game.
Not one of my bishops has gained a valour point for preaching. I think they only get stars for forging alliances ("Thomas Beckett" started off with 3 stars).
I've been excommed three times. Okay, the first time was me initiating an attack but the second time was after the Danes attacked me in Sweden (and failed) and the third time (still active but the Pope is in his 70's) after the Sicilians attacked me first, both times unprovoked! So I guess it'll be a long while before I'm back in the good books and getting donations. It tells me I have the largest armies and, occasionally, the greatest income, so I hardly need it... ;)
