not sure if this is bug but its damn annoying
Playing France in early, kicked the english out of mainland europe and thought it was about time establish a kingdon in the holy land... launched a crusade to palestine and packed it close to two thousand troops headed up by a 6 star prince of royal blood with good V and V's (careful grooming)
on they march till they get to the zeal defunct areas of eastern europe and byzantium... troops started to leave every turn. Now have no problem as the game explains why this happens- UNTIL i check the composition of the crusade AND THE BLOODY GENERAL/PRINCE HAS DISSAPPEARED

this can't be right- how earth can the crusade continue when the leader just sneaks off in the middle of the night because he's far from home and doesn't have his mommy to tuck him in???? and how on earth can a PRINCE with high loyalty just decide enough is enough?
This happened twice with different crusades. until i restarted disgusted .......... explain pls http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/confused.gif

Every soldier in a Crusade can desert the Crusade. That is how it is sadly. I would prefer if generals and holy units would not desert the Crusade unless terms have been very unfavourable, such as the Crusade has been sitting still for three years.
But I have experienced something that sent me into a range as well, after I jumped up and down I calmed down and laughed at the prospect.
I had an English Crusade soak up my great and wonderful Otto Karolinger (Royal general) from my great and wonderful HRE. The Crusade succeded and the English retained my Royal general as their own. When I was finished raging on, I began to tumble with the thought of bringing him to power in England (by means unknown to the English hehehe) and thus I would have my family on the throne in both countries. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif
In reality it was a heavy blow to my armies as he was the only great general I had, under him I only had a handful of decent generals and dodgy heirs, but a quite good Emperor.
I think Royal generals should either be immune to Crusades just like kings and heirs or be very disloyal to the new faction, so that it would be dangerous to soak them up (imagine a powerful Crusade going over to the other side lead by a brilliant general with great V&Vs).
The last and greatest prospect would be a possibility of my idea living it out. The possibility of Civil War where the Royal general would join his old faction should he win.

I think that came from the fact that you put princess as the title to the thread http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/dizzy.gif http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/eek.gif http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wacko.gif

humble apologies oh sharp eyed ones :P (busy trying to work and type at the same time)
Thanks for thoughts. kind of gutting to lose top generals without even an arrow loosened or blood spilled, should be some rule against that....
Kraxis- i had the same problem yesterday, my best English general jumped ship on a passing crusade (and i'd even given him my youngest daughter, titles, lands and a giant army http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/frown.gif )... in my rage i didn't let the crusade pass and singled him out for death, before being battered by every other catholic faction and a gazillion rebellions -ouch. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/tongue.gif

you can send preists too?wow did'nt know that
Not directly into hte Crusade faisal... but they can follow the Crusade. Take three or four of them and move them along the lines of the Crusade.
Dr_No it is always a pain to lose ones best general but it hurts plenty more when he is a Royal one. How I wanted him to become the English king after that. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Something which might or might not cheer you all up: I just showed this thread to our designer, and he says that this is deliberate behaviour and if anything isn't happening often enough ;)
Kings and heirs shouldn't join crusades: this would be a bug if it's happened to anyone. But any general, even one who was formerly an heir, can join another faction's crusade, and will stay with the faction after the crusade completes. Apparently this used to happen, although I don't have reference to hand.

It can be quite nice though.
I finally drove the Spanish out of Spain (playing the Turk) but they still owned the rest of Europe. The constant crusades really annoyed me, but the Byzantine had started to kill them before they even reached me.
Spain launched a crusade...big one with King in the front. It met the Byzantines somewhere around Hungary, and suddenly the entire Spanish empire became neutral factions http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif Guess the king was too busy crusading to procreate...talk about warped priorties http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/joker.gif
Gil the problem was not really that my Royal general joined a Crusade... I fumed with rage, but I loved to toy with the thought of bringing him to power, even if that would not make him my friend or ally.
The problem is really that Pachinko suffered a loss of his Prince to Crusade-fatigue. And I have to admit that is something I would hate as well. Where would he go? Why did he go there, he had much better prospects as a prince? So a Prince should not just say: "To hell with it, I have found a nice little peasant girl, I'm staying here in Vladimir (or where he is)" No he would have a good time in Vladimir and then move on as all feudal lords and kings would have.
Something along the same lines was when I suffered 6 losses in my castle out of 90 or so troops. One of them happened to be the commanding general, a mighty good one. Would he not have access to the best/most food and water? It really pained me as that was the first year after a great castledefence against 2000 Almohads.

Ah, gotcha. OK, yes, the loss of the prince is most likely a bug. Someone will take a look at it...

I suppose soldiers and generals could be getting sick and dying, except that isn't modelled in the game at a time when great plagues swept through Europe no less.
Your commanding general could sneak out in the middle of the night... That happens many time in history... Gave a rousing speech the day before, gave everyone wine...
Annie
ps.: I believe that is is more realistic that a commanding general dies as well, being replaced by one of his lieutenants (who could have similar traits such as good command, because the lieutenants may learn from his master).
I have definitely seen a general/prince disappear out of a crusade at least once. My crusade was busily moving through the HRE enroute to the Byzantines. I had dumped a high-star prince (might have been the heir) into the crusade, to both bolster the crusade's combat ability, and to give sonny-boy some combat experience. Two turns later I checked, and the current general has zero stars. That's funny, I thought. Sure enough, no prince I guess he'd had enough of that crusade thing and gone and married a peasant in northern Germany, disappearing from the politics scene http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif
Nowadays I try to ensure that the general comes in from elsewhere to give the Crusade the multi-star punch.
