Im having a lot of problem with my Byz infantry. I had a battle last night, mostly Byz inf, some archers, couple horse archers, and 2 pavise crossbowmen. I totally owned the French when my horse archers got done with them and they reached my line. Flanked both sides, killed the general(happened to be the king), had them routed with my men chasing them off the edge. Then it happened, his re-enforcements came on and my guys went screaming all the way back to my generals position. No matter how many times I rallyed and got a defensive position set up, first contact they went screaming away. Now i know they have a low morale to start with, but is this normal when they had very few casualties, werent flanked? And are Varangian Guard much higher in the morale department than Byz inf? Havent gotten my buildings up to par yet heh.

Varangians should be...I don't know exactly; but they're elite, while Byz Inf are more conscript like. As far as your troops fleeing for their lives; how exhausted were they? If they were all very tired / exhausted, their morale would have suffered a big penalty.

byz infantry are notorious for tiring quickly, and at exhaustion level they will be scared by a mouse.

If they had a low valor they would certainly run when they got tired. Varangians at valor 0 have 6 morale, plus they are elite. ByzInf at v0 has 0 morale and they are not-elite.

Byz infantry need to have valor 3 or 4 before they can really be relied on. V0 varangians are ready for battle.

(remember, each valor increases (among other things) morale by +2).

Have fun.

The title of this thread really cracks me up

"Byzantine infantry. Low moral questions." http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/eek.gif

I take it you mean morale? http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

Just trying to imagine the Byzantine warriors raping and pillaging their conquered provinces and asking really immoral or lewd questions...i... http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Actually I prefer to let them rally, so they come back and I can kill more of them http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

Discipline: obey command. I believe here that they don't charge into enemy without you ordering them, or if they are engaged, and you order retreat, they will not continue fighting.

Low morale: has tendency to run away when face adversity.

I think the model of the game is this. Every unit has a start morale point. Some unit has 0 (Sarecen, Chiv.Sgt., Biz.Inf., etc.) Some starts at 8 (Lancers, etc.) During the course of the game, the start morale point is affected, augmented or diminished by, many factors: being flanked or rear-ended, seeing friend runs, feel lonely, general is just dead, fatigue, casualty, not in formation, etc. can reduce a unit morale, while being near the general, get flank protected, etc. increase morale.

A unit will run if morale is below a certain point. When morale is high, the unit may charge unexpectedly, etc. That's indiscipline.

Hmm, maybe that's why I can never convince my units to disengage once they're fighting... My morale is always too high. I once had a unit of Gothic Knights with a morale of 25...

Disciplined troops are also not affected by the generals death and they don't fear (too much at least) lesser troops running, only other Disciplined or Elite troops will scare them.

BTW, that`s something I`ve been meaning to ask: Disciplined troops aren`t affected by the death of the general, but how about Elite troops?

I think they are, considering that Jannisary Heavy Infantry have both Elite and Disciplined status. I don't think others have that.
Also your troops get Disciplined status if produced in a province with a Military Academy (needed for Jannisaries).

Elite can be affected by generals death i think?

Elite ignores non-elite routing friends. Ubr.Mil. sees mass of peasants rout, they rout too. Not the elite troops. They only rout of see other elite troops rout too.

Knight 1: "Bah, the foot is routing again."
Knight 2: "Bloody peasants."
Knight 1: "Wait, aren't those Templar Knights running out in front and screaming like women?"
Knight 2: "Hmm, perhaps we should consider retiring..."
