So here's the deal: I'm playing an SP campaign, Glorious Achievement, with the intent of playing "in character" and just trying to mind my own business for the length of the whole game. Yet inevitably, I end up conquering the whole world, or at least owning 5/6 of it by game end. Anyone else have this problem? Is it boredom? Or maybe AI provocation (no matter how much I try to stay small and neutral, stuff always happens.)

I have the same problem, and I blame AI provocation. I push out trade routes and eventually they've got to attack one of my ships and then things escalate from there.

Same deal. You try to stay neutral, but sooner or later someone attacks you and stays at it until you kill him.
I especially hate the Sicilian wankers that always, always I tell you, attack your shipping They don`t quit if you ask for peace. They don`t quit when you`ve finally swept them from the seas. They don`t quit when you take all their lands except for Sicily. So you destroy them, and what happens? They respawn and start it all over again just to spite you

Usually but not always http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif
I found I was usually just picking up properties because they were there. When I switched to a more discplined expansion strategy (if it ain't a mega trade area or needed for GA; leave it alone) I found that it wasn't too hard to remain in relative peace.
For some factions I think that a "gentler" style of play is impossible. Turks gotta squash at least one neighbour to do anything; HRE has quite an agressive GA agenda; Byz have nothing but conquest for GA really...
Note: with both my Italian and Danish campaigns keeping a low profile did not work at all http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/eek.gif
In both of my GA games (Spanish and Polish), I owned about 2/3 of the world (60+%). Both ended when time ran out. It was not TD but I had to eleminate any factions that have more points than me and the ones who were trailing very close. So I agree that it can't be done peacefully.

I hold myself back and only go after what I need for the GA goals and usually I crush my worst enemies. My most recent campaign with the HRE has me owning Germany, France, Italy, Denmark and Poland. I've been in combat with pretty much every faction thus far it's about 1300, but haven't wasted them all. Since my way in the lead for GA points I'm just holding on to what is mine. Defending can be fun especially when every other faction is trying to kill you.

Most of the time I end up fighting other factions because of revenge http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/mad.gif And most of the time the revenge is because some idiotic faction decides to attack one of your peaceful trade routes Scumm So I am thinking to play a GA campaign without any trade routes, guess that's pretty hard?
