View Full Version : Ex-comm of other factions
Will the Pope inform you if he ex-communicate someone? I am Italy and I am waiting for the Pope to excommunicate someone so I can invade him http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif
But France is at war with England (don't know who starts it, perhaps France did) and never heard the Pope says anything.

Yes he does (if you are playing catholic). Also on the "Alliances" parchment the status of the catholic factions is marked by the cross over the shield, broken = excomm'd. If you move the cursor over the shield it says "catholic faction, currently excomm'd" or something similar.

You could always eliminate the pope; then you're free to do whatever you want. He's really not that tough; just make sure he doesn't survive the battle; if he does, you're going to have to assault the castle quickly to avoid being excommunicated. Burning Rome to the ground also gives you a nice little war chest for your future invasion...

Yeah the Pope is nice enough to let you know when he excommunicates another faction. I always have a crusade ready so I can pounce on whoever the unlucky bastard is right away I enjoy beating up on other catholics especially when for a change the Pope supports you in it.
About eliminating the Pope, it is good to get your excomm. revoked, but if you totally take out his faction he keeps coming back and it just gets annoying... or MORE annoying than usual.
Down with the Pope

Yeah, I've had the pope reappear with 2 stacks of very good units- it was a pain even to contain him, as he was very angry with me and decided to do some invading. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/angry.gif
does anyone want a spoiler about the mechanics of excommunication tracking by the pope?
it will make life easier if you know how to avoid being excomm'd, BUT it IS a cheat - kinda....
(it is exploiting a limitation within the games internal database...) http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/idea.gif

how about this?excommed british crusadng in almohad territoryexcommed peeps can crusade too?never knew that
No that has to be a bug. Just like the bug where you were still a viable target for Crusades if you had been Excommed at some point. Luckily it got killed during the patch.
barocca is it the point of 50%???
But besides this the Pope also gives word when he warns factions I think. The point is that he only keeps track of one warning, so if you see a warning go and beat up all the small catholics. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif You can also use that if you are the warned faction. Attack Aragon and get warned then turn around and attack Poland freely.

Yeah, lets hear it Barroca. We can keep a secret. Really. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif
now you can play this way if you are frustrated,
or can you can "ignore" this spoiler and play the game as the developers intended,
Personally i can get so frustrated losing a territory to another faction, and i can't take it back because they hole up in the castle and pope hands me a warning.

Or even worse, they invade 2 or 3 provinces at once,
I choose to retreat to castle, they withdraw seige #1, my men rush out into my territory, and the pope hands ME a warning,
the next turn the aggressors retreat from another of my provinces, my men again rush out of the castle and I am excommed for reclaiming my own lands???

SO, you want to attack the french? but you just know he's going to hole up in his castles and wait for the pope to bail him out by handing you a yellow card?
http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/mecry.gif
simply, send a single unit of peasants against a catholic faction who is not a threat - say the danes,
The pope hands you a yellow card next turn for attacking the Danes, now your "yellow card" database file is full and you can attack anyone you want for the next nine years
- the pope only remembers one warning per faction and remembers only that warning for ten years...
(thats why the other factions can "go to town" on you without getting ecxcommed - the AI uses this "feature")

Just remember to take note of the date you launched your peasant invasion, and make sure you have finished your assaults by the end of the decade.

i'll have to test for Kraxis variant, i seem to recall it is one warning per faction...
hmm.. that is quite an intersting point there... i guess ill have to use it to my advantage when attacking the papacy http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif
