I mostly play the single player game from the early period then work my way through the later periods of the game on expert level without any trouble. But I tried playing the game on expert during the late periods and found it at least 10 times as hard. I played the Germans first, I was amazed at the lack of upgrades my provinces had and the lack of quality general I had. After 20 or so turns my neighbors we sending attacks across my borders and I couldn't afford to counter attack because the computer had citadels and gigantic armies. So I decided to try another faction. The Byzantines were worse. After taking a couple provinces in turkey the Egyptians and Turks marched right in and bullied me out. Then to the west the Mongols suddenly appeared and took Greece and Bulgaria effectively boxing me in at Constantanoble.

My question is, why does it get so much harder in the later periods but not the early period?

Try The Mid East factions in late. Egyptians and Turks have great starting positions. The Almohads are a little tougher with Spain so close, but you should be able to take them out.

late is much tougher because you have less time.. you might also note that you should probably specialise with proviences, like only build swords in one, spears in another and so forth, that way you can get high end troops relativly quick. Pre patch i could play early and have all my late units into the beginning of the "high" era
