Fixing the siege times was, after ctd, one of the most important additions of the new patch.
However, on my comp, it only works half the time, literally.
the first time i was besieged, i could not be conquered whitout frontal assault. This was with 10 crosbowman in a lousy fort agains an 900 men army.
But every time i besiege an enemy, exactly the opposite happens.
Enemy in a castle and 400 men strong against my 500 men = they will fail in 1 round Quite lame since a was sporting the newest fashion in siege-wear.
Is this a bug or are there outside influences ?

400 men can depelete a castles supply after a year or 2,if you want longer sieges they gotta be less then 100 men.

hmm, that makes sence.
But why do the men keep dying at the same speed when the numbers fall ?
Makes the population limit a bit stupid aswell, the last ting you want is to fill the place up 'cause they will be dropping like flies.
Just had an idea What if you could lengthen the siege time by eating the horses Mounted troops would become dismounted, maybe include a fun vice etc.

A brilliant idea about eating the horses. Maybe the French or Germans should be better at this rather than other nations?

keep in mind that castles (to use the general term) have garrisons and not just the 10 men you see when you click the banner.

eating horses would be for an expansion i think http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/tongue.gif since boyars and alot of other cav can't dismount http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/tongue.gif camels can be eaten thoughthey taste good too(will lengthen the seige time since camels are a source of nutrition in the mid east)the problem is the side affects of eating the camel http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/tongue.gif makes you selfish and arrogant and smelly just like a camel http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/joker.gif

Sounds alot like generic fantasy.
"By eating the camel some of its spirit now resides in you. You have taken over some of its attributes."
Followed by "TACO +1 in desert" or something.

The "some units can't dismound problem" can easely be solved by not giving them the eat-horses option and adding in the discription "the UNIT has a deep and disturbing relationship with his horse and will not part with it".

getting back to the seiges...
it doesn't matter if the seige is long or short, you have to assualt the castle, so build those catapults. if the castle falls without an assualt, it falls down to the next lower level of castle.

I took a castle with 25 peasants took 5 years though.

You'd think that one in a while the besieged forces would at least attempt a breakout rather than starve to death.
Options:
(i) starve to death, to every last man, inflicting NO casualties on the enemy.
(ii) try to break out and either win outright, or lose and be destroyed, but at least taking some of the enemy with you. And, hey, most of your men might be captured and ransomed back to you.
You'd think the AI would pick option (ii) once in a while.
Oi CA What i'd like to see in sieges:
1. The AI retreats less often in general, and MUCH less often retreats to the castle without a battle, ESPECIALLY if it knows (and, hey, it should be able to work it out) that the castle will fall within 1 or 2 years and there is no nearby force available to attempt to break the siege.
2. Give us (and the AI) a way of choosing which forces to retreat to the castle and which to withdraw from the province entirely. Thus, we can choose to just withdraw a few good defensive units to the castle, so the siege will last longer.
3. If the AI's castle under siege is about to fall, at least SOME of the time make the forces in the castle attempt to break out to freedom, if only to try to take some of my troops with them.
I have noticed that sometimes the AI selects certain units to defend the castle.
I have only experienced this in situations where the AI retreats.
It is very odd to see an army of 600 retreat from the province and leave 80 Spearmen in a Keep... While this is a very sensible thing to do, I can't do it.
So is it possible for the AI to select certain units to defend?
If this was enabled for the player as well it would make castlebattles much more widespread. Though the AI has shown itself very incapable of taking larger castles.
