If you aren't Dutch or Flemish you probably never heard of Geenstijl, there is a cordon sanitaire in quality newspapers and the state-tv, they just ignore it.

But this is a tour de force, they managed to get almost half a milion signs for a referendum about the position of the government about the democratic deficit of the EU. That doesn't sound like much but most people didn't even know about it simply because they read quality-newspapers and watch state-tv it's A LOT. The goverment now has to hold the referendum, only 300.000 are required, about half a million is what we (not me) got. Big high-five to the UK in advance.

Wow, that is impressive if they go through with it.

They don't longer have a choice now, they can ignore the outcome though, they did that before, the EU just called the consitution something else and the Dutch government signed anyway despite a very big NO. But it's a clear signal that this referendum can't be ignored.

Dear eurocrates, this is our revenge and you can't ignore us this time we are now bigger than any political party combined in whatever coalition. Despite the total ignoring of 'quality' newspapers and state-journalists thousands of volunteers still got half a million autographs.

Gutmenschen are framing it as an initiave of Geert Wilders, but he has nothing to with it he does not get away with the stupid things he says.

450,000 - out of a population of 17 million?

Given further that the Netherlands doesn't even have any actual process for dealing with referendums, I wouldn't expect this to cause waves anytime soon.

Take in mind that it was mostly ignored by newspapers and tv, they just ignored it. Only because of a thousand volunteers this is possible, It's not a treaty against, you can also vote in favour of everrything. almost everybody signed against but the option remains open. You just get a choice and you can make every choice, np at all

They only needed 300000 and they overshot by 150000. Considering the general lack of interest the average person takes in international politics this great an outcry becomes rather more prevalent than monty would suggest.

Rephrase this so it isn't gibberish.

k, geenstij is just a (very popular blog, they managed to get these (almost) 500.000 autographes thanks to about a thousand volunteers on the street. It was completily ignored, my mother didn't even know about it and she reads newspapers and watches the news. They gave it zero coverage but Geenstijl pulled it of anyway to force a referndum. Only 300.000 autographes were needed. It doesn't sound like many, but most people never heard about it, so it's quite a feat. Geenstijl is a bjt of a nemesis of MSM, but they did it anyway despite MSM totally ignoring this. Now the goverment has to have the referendum on the EU meddling it are their own rules.

It's not about nothing, we don't want Ukraine in the EU because there is a proxy-war with Russia there. EU wants to, or allready decided to, bad idea.

It is such a long shot. It is likely to happen in like 20 years if at all. By this time Putin will have been dead and the war will have stopped.
