Moving to Dallas, TX

Hello Org,

In the spirit of LEN's Moving to Canada/Belgium thread, I'd like to get the org's take on life in the Dallas/N.Dallas area. I've grown tired of the dark, grey weather of the Finisterre islands, and it just so happens that my employer may have an opportunity for me in much sunnier/drier Texas.

What are people's experiences? I've never lived in Texas before so would appreciate any advice on nice areas, stuff to do, anything you might consider useful for an uncivilised european like myself. I'm a bit past the wild nightclub partying, but i've no family so it would be good to be in a place one can socialise. Pre mid-life crisis hopefully.

Dallas is a world city, it shouldn't be a major culture shock. I am not overly familiar with the metroplex but I do slum it with a lot of folks who are. PM if you want more information.

My sister lives in Texas. Her husband works for the oil industry. That was a good source of income. Their house is bigger than my parents'. During the last financial crisis, Texas was one of the most economically stable states in the US, although it did felt a hit. I don't know how they're doing now that the low oil prices are hurting the oil industry. My sister tends to hide her problems.

I'm more in the telecom area, so would be based closer to Plano, but obviously would prefer to live somewhere i could walk to places and that would have a bit of nightlife. Strike - I will be PMing you in a bit.

So it is all happening. My manager in Dublin signed the release form, so off i go to arm myself with all the necessary cavity checks to get my work permit visa. Should be 6 or so weeks to D-day. Wish me luck.

north dallas is cool. bachman lake is god in the summer. be carefull not to get into a bad area :)...the weather isnt bad, can be real hot (in the 100s) in summer and in winter can get way below freezing but generally not too bad. Places to eat, dont get that way anymore but if Atchafalaya's is still there is great cajun...and Baby Doe's is good too. be really carefull of traffic, rush hour on LBJ freeway...hwy 635 in north dallas, and aroudn I 35 in nw dallas are gridlock. Theres music, museums, baseball and football and soccer. Lots of shopping. And you also have Ft Worth and the midcities to the west. Ft Worth has a nice garden area with really nice Japanese Gardens. Just be carefull of traffic. Lots of construction Ft Worth way. Hope ya like it, take care.

Thanks for the advice guys. I'm already in Texas. Ended up playing it safe, and living very close to work, near Plano. Which isn't very exciting, but is very convenient. Found a place to live, bought a car, all those things, and have even made it as far south as Austin, and as far north as Oklahoma. I'm enjoying it so far. It is a bit featureless - I lived next to the ocean before, but there are some nice spots - Rockwall was a pleasant discovery.

Enjoying myself, in short, and looking forward to exploring more of this state, and country!
