Quarterfinals results

Everybody remaining in the tournament has proved their mettle, whether it be through round robin domination en route to a top-four seed, or through a gutty victory in the first round. At this point, the advantage that atheotes, Csargo, Winston Hughes, and Visorslash have gotten has expired. Their observation period is over - now it is time to be tested by fire just like everybody else. Will they be able to match up to their obstacles? Or will the runs of Zack, Myrddraal, BSmith, and seireikhaan continue? Much will be revealed in a few short minutes.

Some have been here before. Visorslash, obviously, won the championship in the previous tournament and he looks unfazed by it all. seireikhaan has made the quarterfinals once before, in the second tournament, before falling to #1 seed Centurion1. Csargo has done the same, losing to eventual champion Thermal Mercury in the same tournament. atheotes has been in the round of eight once before, but it was in the very first tournament where there were only eight total contestants. This is Zack and BSmith's first time in the Quarters after first round losses in the last tournament. Myrddraal and Winston Hughes are putting on fine shows for their first-ever appearances.

None but Visorslash have ever seen the tournament beyond this point, though. That prize, the semis and beyond, motivates them all.

The referee walks out, acknowledges the contestants, and raises his hand in the air.

"Rock... paper... scissors... shoot!"

#1 atheotes vs. #11 seireikhaan
It is recency vs. history for the #1 overall seed and co-favorite (along with Visorslash). On one hand, atheotes has had a very strong tournament, being fazed by very little and only having three total losses, none consecutively. On the other hand, atheotes is 0-2 lifetime in the knockout round, and the #1 seed has never won the entire tournament. Indeed, most recently it lost in a gigantic upset... in the quarterfinals... to the #11 seed. khaan, having thrown off the shackles of his "always rock" strategy, is ready for battle. He throws Rock, but atheotes is not quite ready to succumb to the weight of history and has met it with a Rock of his own. On the rethrow, it is a battle of wills. atheotes, a single bead of sweat rolling down his temple, switches to Paper... but khaan has also switched, to Scissors. As the Cinderella celebrates loudly, atheotes slumps his shoulders in silent despair. The numbers speak for themselves. The Curse of the #1 Seed is alive and well, and it has just claimed its latest victim.
seireikhaan advances

#2 Csargo vs. #10 BSmith
Csargo has the heavy seeding advantage here, but it is of little comfort to him. His defeat to BSmith on Day 9 of the round robin - his most recent loss - is still quite fresh in his mind. BSmith has had a very up-and-down tournament, but in the cutthroat world of Rock/Paper/Scissors, hexes and hoodoos are most certainly real. Lightning can certainly strike twice. Csargo, for his part, calms down. After all, he is the #2 seed. He has recorded a famous victory over Winston Hughes and battled Visorslash to a draw. He is ready for this. At least, he is until the throw. He shows Rock, BSmith shows Paper, and just like that, the hex is back and the hoodoo still reigns supreme. The upsets are out in full force.
BSmith advances

#3 Winston Hughes vs. #8 Myrddraal
After two straight upsets, Winston Hughes is determined to restore order to things (for his own sake), but he will have a tough challenge in Myrddraal. For one thing, Winston is still smarting from his big loss to Csargo on the final day of the round robin, and has had extra time to stew over it. For another, Myrddraal, despite his uneven record, has always risen to the occasion when he's needed to most. For a third, the two of them drew back on Day 4. This match, however, has no extended drama. Winston waits for the referee's cadence, quickly throws Paper, and sees that it has covered Myrddraal's Rock. Myrddraal has had a good run, but he was never able to put a solid string of results together and it ended up costing him in the end. Meanwhile, Winston's "prize" is a date with the suddenly-dangerous khaan in the semifinals.
Winston Hughes advances

#4 Visorslash vs. #5 Zack
Zack's ability has grown by leaps and bounds in this tournament from the previous one, but now he faces his final exam of sorts in his rival and the defending champion Visorslash, whom he has never beaten. Zack has thought about this matchup quite a lot over the past few days, vacillating between hard analysis and going with his gut, with pretty much every step in between. The time to pick, though, is now upon him. After a slightest of pauses, Zack throws Paper... only to see his choice and thus his hopes of winning the tournament cut down by Visor's Scissors. After Visor shakes hands with his defeated foe, he turns to the crowd and raises his arms in triumph. With another win in the knockout round under his belt, and the defeat of atheotes, Visorslash is now the favorite to repeat as champion. Can anybody stop him?
Visorslash advances

Congrats to our defeated quarterfinalists: atheotes, Csargo, Myrddraal, and Zack, on a fine tournament. You guys had solid runs, but it just wasn't meant to be.

Quarterfinals results - betting

583 gold was wagered this round, a record that last all of one round if these big gambles keep going. We'll start with the more responsible smaller wagers first:

Al Sipsclar started off strong, picking up wins with his khaan and BSmith picks, but then fell back to earth as the upsets stopped happening. He's even for the day. Myrddaal put three bets of various wagers on, but unfortunately for him his biggest bet was on himself, and, well, he failed to deliver. His other two bets cancelled out and he finds himself down 35. edse is also down for the day, but only 2, as his 50 on atheotes was almost completely mitigated by picking up 48 for Winston.

BSmith continued his doubling up as his run to the semifinals and corresponding bet gave him 40 more gold to play with. Csargo, while out of the tournament, is set to leave the stadium at least with some more gold in his pocket, as his devotion to khaan puts him up an amazing 100 for the day. And finally, Winston, throwing all caution to the wind, wagered his entire 170 gold on khaan and as a result doubled up to an astounding 340. It is now up to Winston and khaan to work out the finer details on any previously-discussed loan agreement.

With the semifinals upon us, there are only four more matches to gamble on (I do have a third-place match), so it's now or never!

Semifinals results

And then there were four.

seireikhaan, the Cinderella. BSmith, the wild card. Winston Hughes, the underrated power. Visorslash, the favorite and defending champion. They've each triumphed in their own different ways and overcame their own struggles to be here, but the thing in common is that they have risen to the occasion when it has mattered most. Only two more correct throws separate them from eternal glory, but, as is the nature of things, these will be the hardest throws of the tournament.

The pressure is clearly on, but they are still in a very enviable position. Certainly those who have fallen - atheotes, Csargo, Zack, Myrddraal, Jolt, Al Sipsclar, El Barto, Sigurd, and edse - would kill to be able to feel the pressure that the semifinalists are experiencing right now. After all, glory comes with drawbacks, but to a man these are acceptable drawbacks.

The stadium is noticeably shaking from the deafening crowd noise, but it does not stop everyone from taking their marks and being ready. Finally, the noise manages to calm down to a manageable roar, and the referee walks out, acknowledges the contestants, and raises his hand in the air.

"Rock... paper... scissors... shoot!"

#3 Winston Hughes vs. #11 seireikhaan
All eyes are on Winston right now to see his reactions. khaan has risen from the ashes and taken out two straight favorites, including #1 atheotes. Can he continue his reign of terror, or will Winston halt the tide? Winston is somewhat the lost boy in the semis, caught between the Cinderella runs of khaan and BSmith as well as Visorslash's potential historical repeat victory. This is doing him a great disservice, as he was never in danger of dropping out of the top four during the round robin and scored a quick, decisive victory over #8 Myrddraal in the quarterfinals. After this round, though, it will be impossible to continue to overlook Winston, as his Scissors quickly dispatches khaan's Paper. Just like that, the Cinderella story is over and Winston continues his fine tournament all the way to a finals appearance. Meanwhile, a lot of groans can be heard from the betting rooms - quite a bit of money has just been lost.
Winston Hughes advances

#4 Visorslash vs. #10 BSmith
One Cinderella may be down, but BSmith still stands ready for battle. After clawing his way out of the bottom, BSmith has done very well for himself, having not lost since all the way back on Day 8 of the round robin. Of course, he and Visor met before that (Visor triumphed on Day 6), but BSmith is still hoping that he can keep this quiet little hot streak of his going to the finals. It will not be easy, though. Visor was the co-favorite once the positions in the knockout round was determined and became the outright favorite once atheotes fell. He has also never lost in the knockout round, posting a sparkling 4-0 record and counting across two tournaments. In the end, Visor's march to a repeat continues and BSmith is extinguished - his Paper is cut up by Visor's Scissors. Still though, it was a splendid run, and BSmith takes a deep bow and salutes the crowd before walking off. His good play has earned him a spot in the consolation match, but everybody's focus is elsewhere. The main event has been set: Winston Hughes vs. Visorslash, for all the marbles.
Visorslash advances

With the finals set, we are guaranteed to have a winner from a Commonwealth nation for the fourth consecutive time. This will be the second time that a #3 and a #4 seed battle each other for the championship - the last time was in the second tournament, when #4 Thermal Mercury took down #3 Stildawn. In addition to the #4 winning in the previously-mentioned scenario, a #3 seed has also won the tournament once: Visorslash himself, in the previous tournament.

I'd like to congratulate seireikhaan and BSmith for defying the odds and providing us all with some excellent drama, and of course to our two finalists. Gentlemen, we're almost home.

All that gold that was won in the quarterfinals? Gone. :laugh4: The problem with betting on Cinderella is that eventually the clock is going to strike midnight, as Winston, BSmith, and Csargo have learned. All three have busted out - Winston by way of lending his sizeable sum to seireikhaan, who, true to form, has now spectacularly busted out for a third time this tournament. All in all the carnage comes out to 620 gold lost between the three of them: 80 for BSmith, 200 for Csargo, and 340 for the Winston/khaan partnership. The bar is going to do some good business tonight.

In happier news, edse picked up 90 gold from a successful bet on Visorslash. Myrddraal too, recognized that BSmith's run would come to an end and picked up 50 from a bet on Visor, as well as 20 more from El Barto after Barto's pick on khaan to win proved to be a bad investment. Rounding out the betting, Al Sipsclar came out even after he hit on his Winston bet but missed on BSmith.

Consolation result

The third place match is often derided as being useless. Of the 90 matches that take place during the tournament, it is the one that has no impact whatsoever on the champion. It is a warmup for the main event. It is a cheap way of building up dramatic tension for what everyone truly wants to see. Both of the entrants going into it are somewhat downcast. It's anticlimactic. Etc etc etc.

All of that can be tossed aside in this instance. BSmith and seireikhaan have each played 15 matches, many of those going to rethrows. They've defied the odds and upset the #1 and #2 seeds in the quarterfinals before finally falling. They've been through the ringer. They have earned this. If one of them getting justly rewarded for their hard work means everyone is going to have to wait a little longer for the main event, then they're just going to have to deal with it. After all, they still made the semifinals. Nine other contestants can't say that. Nine other contestants would love to be where they are right now.

#10 BSmith started out very slowly, only picking up a half point in his first three matches. One of his losses to khaan during that time came with a lot of gold on the line too, digging him a quite large hole. BSmith righted the ship on Day 4 with a big victory over atheotes, but quickly fell back into trouble with a draw and then three consecutive losses. With the round robin more than halfway over by that point, BSmith was in severe danger of finishing with the dreaded #13 seed, but here he showed his quality. He defeated Csargo - not for the last time - on Day 9, edged out a draw with Zack on Day 10, and made the most of his bye on Day 11 by preparing for his final two matches, which were another win and draw. After a grueling battle with #7 Al Sipsclar in the first knockout round, BSmith toppled #2 Csargo for good in the quarterfinals before finally succumbing to defending champion Visorslash in the semis. With his rough days behind him, BSmith looks to settle accounts and get even with the person who put him in such trouble - financial and otherwise - so early on in the tournament.

#11 seireikhaan surprised everybody including himself by getting off to such a hot start in the tournament. Apparently it had been so long since the previous tournament that everybody forgot about his patented "always Rock" strategy, and he quickly reeled off three straight victories before Csargo stopped the madness and threw Paper. khaan picked up one more victory against Myrddraal on Day 5, and then finally went into his funk. After consecutive losses to Visorslash, Zack, and Winston Hughes, khaan was in danger of missing out and finally switched up his strategy to Scissors against atheotes - only for atheotes to be cautious and throw Rock. After a couple more incorrect guesses, he finally sneaked into the knockout round proper on the final day with a controversial draw against #11 Sigurd. In the knockout round, he quickly resumed his usual role of "person nobody wants to face", except this time he actually backed it up with victories over #6 Jolt and then a shocking upset of #1 atheotes. In the semifinals, #3 Winston Hughes restored peace to the situation, but khaan is hoping to put a final stamp on the tournament today and cause just a little more chaos.

Will khaan get his chance or will BSmith get his revenge? The two glower at each other as the referee walks out, acknowledges the contestants, and raises his hand in the air.

"Rock... paper... scissors... shoot!"

It is over very quickly. khaan loves his chaos, but he loves his beloved Rock more, reverting back to form. BSmith ensures that it's a total reversion to form by obliging with Paper. BSmith smirks as khaan storms off, muttering unheard curses as the audience explodes with cheers. His third-place medal is nice, but seeing khaan's reaction is clearly the better reward here.

Still grinning, BSmith takes his place and waits for the championship match to begin. You haven't forgotten about that, have you?

BSmith takes third place in the tournament! Congratulations to him and thanks to seireikhaan for participating!

Finals result

At last, after 89 matchups, the moment of truth has arrived.

There have been lots of twists and turns to the tale along the way. Al Sipsclar's misadventures with Bertha. El Barto's memory loss, believing that he was an 18th century pirate. Jolt's return after a tournament off and his efforts to crack the top four. Sigurd's ultimately unsuccessful attempt at finally becoming the champion after three consecutive tournaments of being the bridesmaid. edse's heroic rally to get into the knockout round, coming up just short after accusations of collusion. Zack's temporary shaking off of his bad memories of the last tournament before a defeat in the quarterfinals. Myrddraal's desperate, doomed search for consistency. And of course, seireikhaan and BSmith's upsets of heavily-favored atheotes and Csargo, respectively.

But at the end of the day, all of those stories are simply the sideshow. The main event has revealed itself: Challenger vs. Champion, Winston Hughes against Visorslash for all the marbles. Either a legacy will be cemented, or a new one will be constructed.

#3 Winston Hughes started out inauspiciously enough, only picking up a half point from the first two days and quickly falling behind in the leaderboard. From there on out, though, he was always good for a battle, scoring three and a half points over the next four days, including a victory over Visorslash himself on Day 5. A loss to Zack on Day 7 brought him back to earth heading into his bye, but coming out of it he took no prisoners, taking three out of his next four matches and clinching himself a spot in the top four before finally ceding the #2 seed to Csargo on the last day of the round robin. This temporary setback did not hurt him at all, as he easily dispatched #8 Myrddraal in the quarterfinals and #11 seireikhaan in the semis, while Csargo actually fell to #10 BSmith. With one final match to go, Winston at last will be facing someone who did not have an underwhelming round robin. If he wins this matchup, against the defending champion, no one will be able to accuse him of having an easy go of it.

#4 Visorslash's record speaks for itself: He's never finished out of the top four in the round robin. Even if he did, it wouldn't matter, as he's 5-0 all time in the knockout round. Unlike Winston, he started out strong, cruising to a victory and a draw in his first two matches before stumbling against Al Sipsclar on Day 3. He went 3-2 in the stretch before his bye (with a loss to Winston included in that), treading water and remaining on the periphery of the top four. In the home stretch of the round robin, he ran the gamut of results: a victory over Sigurd, a loss to atheotes, and a draw to Csargo before clinching the final bye on Day 13 with a timely victory over Myrddraal. Once in the knockout round, Visor did what Visor usually does, with victories over #5 Zack (again) and #11 seireikhaan (also again). Unlike the last finals over Sigurd, though, Visor is going into this one having lost the round robin matchup. It seems as if there is still uncharted ground for Visor to cover after all.

During that matchup on Day 5, each man's initial throw was the second time they had started off with that choice in the round robin to that point: Winston with Rock, and Visor with Scissors. Winston had scored a victory with it, Visor a defeat - and obviously the pattern held here. Would either of them go back to that same well with everything on the line? Over the past day (and during the consolation match), both of them have thought a lot about that, but now, with the supreme moment bearing down on them, they stop thinking. Now, instinct takes over. Now is the time to act.

The audience in the stadium is cheering wildly, madly. They have seen an amazing tournament. They want it to be capped with a bang. The PA announcer comes on and begs for silence, but nobody can hear him over the sound of their own cheering. Eventually, finally, after fifteen long minutes, they calm down enough for proceedings to begin. And, for one last time, the referee walks out, acknowledges the contestants, and raises his hand in the air.

"Rock... paper... scissors... shoot!"

Time slows down for everybody. Winston can see the single bead of sweat trickle down Visor's temple, millimeter by millimeter. Visor can see each individual hair on Winston's forearm tingle as he makes his movement. In this nether zone, each man digs deep to the heart of his soul to determine his choice. In this moment, legacies are made and fates decided.

And then everything speeds back up and it starts to happen very fast. Now it is a blur, and at the end of things it has been decided: Winston, thinking that Visor would not go back to his well of Scissors and instead base his throw off a reaction to that Day 5 result, opts for Paper. Visor, though, has stuck with his choice.

Scissors.

It is done, then. As the audience loses its mind over its result, Visor raises his arms to the sky and emits a primal scream of victory. After 16 separate matchups, he has done what two others before him had failed to do: he has successfully defended his title. Winston has given it his all, but he has come up just short, and there is absolutely no shame in that.

After some time, the post-tournament celebrations have begun. Visor goes through them almost automatically, as if it is old hat for him - and it is. Winston has a bittersweet expression on his face, sensing what was almost in his grasp but then snatched away at the final moment. #10 BSmith is the only other truly satisfied person there - an unexpected third-place finish will do that to you. Everybody else - seireikhaan, atheotes, Csargo, Zack, Myrddraal, Jolt, Al Sipsclar, El Barto, Sigurd, and edse - applauds politely, but they all have peculiar expressions on their faces. If only they had done a couple of things differently.

But no eyes are focused on them. They are all on Visorslash, who, for the second tournament in a row, is accepting the first-place trophy. Once again, he has proven himself to be the Rock/Paper/Scissors champion of the world.

Visorslash takes first place in the tournament!
Winston Hughes takes second place in the tournament!
BSmith takes third place in the tournament!

Thanks to all for participating and making it a great tournament! :medievalcheers:

Finals result - betting

No bust-outs, unfortunately, though one certainly would have been fitting considering how the gambling part of the tournament has gone. Myrddraal did come close though, wagering 80 of his 110 gold on Winston, leaving him with a mere thirty remaining. In other results, Al Sipsclar called the final correctly but misfired on the consolation, leaving him even once again. Finally, edse picked up a cool 35 for his correct wager on BSmith. This final wager is enough to put him at precisely one more gold than both Zack and BSmith - making him the betting champion of the fourth tournament! A worthy prize indeed, and a nice consolation for someone who missed out on the knockout rounds. Everyone else in the betting room politely applauds at edse's final victory - this was well-deserved indeed.

The collective total of the group comes out to 828 gold. With everybody starting out at 100 and ten total bettors, this means the group as a whole made a loss of 172 gold. Most of this can be laid at the hands of seireikhaan, naturally. :laugh4:

I don't know when/if I'm going to run the next tournament (I started to run out of steam near the end), but if you do, how did you feel about the betting mechanic? The personal impression I got just from the vibe in the thread was that it was a fun addition but could have used some refinement.

Bettors:
edse - 221
Zack - 220
atheotes - 220
Al Sipsclar - 102
El Barto - 35
Myrddraal - 30
Csargo - BUSTED
BSmith - BUSTED
Winston Hughes - BUSTED

I actually was going to make a Yates joke but it ended up being too unwieldy.

Well, I had fun. Trolled and got trolled, bankrupted myself and two others to boot. As always, GH's RPS delivers. Well done. :2thumbsup:

Thanks for hosting. Not sure how I made it all the way to #3... For the record 100% of my picks were random.
