I cant belive it just check the Entrance hall forum, and saw it rome: totalwar http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif im still getting over the fact what it looks like 3d and everything and there is screenshots
Rome Screenies (http://www.gamestar.de/aktuell/ggalerie.php?bildname=../aktuell/galerie/200212/rome/rome&bildanzahl=6&seite=1&neu=0&id=477&name=Rome)
i would liek to hea ryour thoughts on this i expect you be as happy and stunned as me http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

I would like to give a big thanks too Scharukin for telling us he really has made my chritmas http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif
even though some people dont think it is they are most proberly right http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/mecry.gif

If this is it which i dout as i would expect CA to tell us or someone else before a magizine was relased plus realseing a movie with the screenshots, im sorry but i dont think this is CA style of realseing a game but if it is or isnt im most defently gonna start playing that game. It looks like the cpu spec will be going up so some people will have to be saveing for a new cpu http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif. i would talk about the screenshots buti can only looks at one of them the others say i hae to have some premium thing whats that all about (proberly money i guess http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/frown.gif ) but the screenshot i can see looks very nice i really really do hopethis is it but well a lil confirmination form CA would be a great help if you get my drift http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif the 3d part of the game looks excellent and i can see the horses have charged in and mixed in with the men not no all fighting in a line kinda thing just think it will be getting better then this as this is proberly still in beta version http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif even if it is the next toalwar serios ahead of them. but if it isnt then they got some real stiff comepetition now http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/eek.gif

also was looking on ca site and forund something nice not though just says there is a new totalwar in development and its top secret look at bottom of site.

3D models? How are our machines going to run this thing without moving at snails pace? My computer can run Shogun just fine, for Medieval I have to turn the sound off to make it playable, I dread to think of how this game will run.

buy a new freaking computer man or go upgrade the one u have...no point complaining the only way to win is to upgrade or buy a new pc...i plan to get a new pc in the middle of 2003 when the powerful ones come. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/angry.gif

Unfortunately this is the nature of the industry. 3D card technology is clearly outpacing CPUs and since everyone just loves eye candy the developers will keep pushing the envelope. Keep in mind that 2003 will be a VERY important year for gamers as Doom 3 will be making an appearance sometime in Summer or Fall. I have no doubt that millions of gamers will upgrade their 3d cards and even get new PCs just to run Id's new baby. The same phenomenon happened when Quake3 & Unreal Tournament hit the market a few years ago (and within months of each other). If I recall correctly gamers everywhere were scrambling to buy GeForce cards because they just HAD to play those games with all the eye candy turned up.

On the other hand I'm willing to bet that CA's programmers have come up with some nifty 3D algorithms to allow for so many 3d characters to be on the screen at once. I think those screenshots are legitimate.

Rspete, to quote a terrible American president, "I feel your pain". My own system runs Medieval well enough but my 1ghz Athlon & Radeon 64 VIVO combination is almost two years old. If you can only run Medieval smoothly by turning off the sound then Rspete my friend, it's time to give your system a makeover...

umm, i hate to burst your bubbles, guys, but i think those screenshots are from a game called 'Rome', not a total war game. still, it might be worth checking out.

yeah im getting a geforce 4 128mb, and iv already got at 1.8 amd so im hopeing it will run good.

Kraellin i kinda agree with you got a few reasons,

1) CA are uk based how german sites get hold of it first.
2) some sites like ign, gamespy, would of heard of it first.
3) a rolling demo with first screenshots a bit quick to bring out a rolling demo.

more reasons just cant think of them right now http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

Personally, I couldn't care less if Rome is a Total War or not. The screenies are certainly pretty, and if it's a good game and runs on my system, I'll happily ditch Medieval. Damn, I'd ditch Medieval even for Orion 3 if it doesn't flop... http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

people dont seem to understand much about 3D technology these days. What you can see are relativly simple models that are skinned well to make them look al nice like.

anyway, as far as it goes, im actually glad they are going 3D, means its much easier for us modders

Ok im being taken up by the vast tide of belivers i hope it is the next game but i still dont feel quite sure about it.
the graphics r gorgeus and i think that a geforce2 1000mhz will run it ok (ive got a Geforce2 soon to be 4 2ghz) if u look at WWE RAW its character models r superb but it isnt all polygons they use a shader type effect to blend the large polygons together to make the characters look mutch more detailed.

awww. And there I was hoping it would have been Conquest of the Americas:Total War, what with ranged gun battles, close up savage indian melee forest fighting, exporation into the interior of the continent for gold and furs, bitter fighting between old rivals such as england, france and Spain, alliances made with natives to help them in their fight, cavalry rushes on the plains of the buffalo, naval engagements and piracy on the high seas.
Now all we get is the same 'ol sword and spears. Ah well http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

Spino
12-25-2002, 21:27
Alrowan. There are special 'tricks' or programming routines that allow programmers to render thousands of complex 3d objects on the screen at once. These 'level of detail' algorithims take complex 3d objects (i.e. a cavalrymen) and scale them down as the object increases its distance from the viewer's point of view. Basically an object composed of hundreds of polygons will look detailed up close but in the distance will only be comprised of a few polygons. Why bother rendering details that would also be indistinguishable in real life?

Knight_Yellow. I strongly urge you to consider buying a Radeon 9500 pro, 9700 or 9700 pro instead of a GeForce 4 Ti card. I offer a reasonable explanation (as well as links) in this thread over in the Apothecary forum:

http://www.totalwar.org/cgi-bin/forum/ikonboard.cgi?s=5b4466 (http://www.totalwar.org/cgi-bin/forum/ikonboard.cgi?act=ST;f=2;t=3790)

Quote[/b] ]-where will be kind of subquests mentioned are : Spartakus and the slaverebellion, hannibal and the crossing of the alpes

Well at least we know they're including the early stages of Rome's development.

Quote[/b] ]-the map is huge parts of europe, northafrika and in the east to persia

YES Persians PLEASE CA, make Persia a playable faction

Quote[/b] ]-over 10k battle maps who (supposed by the previewers consists of 200 maps who are modified through the structures u build in the strategy map (castles exc.)

Well I was hoping for more maps or perhaps a random map generator for the single player game. I really hate fighting on the same battlefield more than once.

Quote[/b] ]-building of worldwonders such as the pyramids, Colossus, and the colosseum, they will give advantages to ur faction

Pyramids and the Colossus?? What is the bloody time frame for this game anyway? Those wonders were built a loooong time before Rome even became a Republic

Well I sincerely hope CA throws a ton of resources at the AI. A true 3D battlefield is a real treat but I'd give much more to have a more formidable AI opponent.

I for one am drooling in anticipation.

i would get a radeon but ive heard rumours that it has bugs in it and fails to play a lot of games.
well ive got 110 pounds for christmas so far and ive still to visit my grans ie. caching £$£$£$£$ so i want to get a comp game and upgrade my card to at least a fast geforce or if these bug reports are untrue a radeon card might graice my hallowed comp.

Technology like crytek can help render all of those polygons, and it might be a worthy idea to replace the models with sprites when at a certain distance.

I cannot wait to unleash wardogs at the enemy

I can imagine those cohorts marching up.

hastati
principes

Awesome idea but only 5000 units on screen fighting at once, isnt that a step down from mtw or will that be the basis and it be scaleable, so i can have huge units then hey that would give me at the normal setting say 700 ish more troops, so if you made it huge it should go to like 10000 on screen at a time in sp mode that i could live with. fourty thousand on screen at a time would be nicer and all you guys with crusty cpu's go buy another you got like almost a year. what do you expect awsome games to come out and still be able to run on your crappy 1.5 gig machines for ever get real if you cant afford it then step back from pcs all together and get a ps2 or somthing.

Magyar Khan
12-27-2002, 14:29
well teh fact that MTW multiplayer is far from finished we can only expect TW romans to be nice for SP.

Looks amazing to me, its about time they used decent 3D. Frankly speaking anyone that knows enough about PC's and likes the game enough to post here should invest in a decent PC anyway.

I hope they do some serious diplomacy and trade options
not some token effort either that would put it in the same *(&* hole that mtw is in.
I can wait for it to come out if its goign to be a really in depth game , even so far as to have options as to what to do with prisioners, rome had many slaves it would be awsome to have captured prisioners increase prodution in the home front . and a greater break down of income from provinces each one with an adjustable taxable setting.
im guessing though that these guys will be under a dead line to have the product on the shelves though so maybe i wont see too much of what i would like. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/frown.gif dam the bean counters....

I think it's great Hopefully, when there is a siege battle, the defenders will be able to set up archers on the walls, or the attackers could maybe use ladders (it would seem unlikely thought). I would also like to see what new civs. there are and what new units, and also how this would tie into the original M:TW...I can't wait to see how this will play out

And misquotations start immediately after that. The game's multiplayer & network code was complete well before the game's release. The message which you're misquoting was talking about the code for processing game results on the GameSpy servers.

I'm sure this isn't the first time I've had to correct this misapprehension, but I'm bored with it now, so please make it the last.

Well...there is enough evidence to say it's true. It's clear those screenshots don't belong to another game, because someone should have recognised them by now.

The style is very Total War and it's far too much work to create those images just to fool idiots like me.

I never expected Gil to give a serious answer, but it was worth trying.
