View Full Version : Season 3: Mafia Champions- NOMINATE SOMEONE

Sup gais
So our website is invited to join the third season of the "Champions" series of mafia games (http://www.mafiauniverse.com/forums/forums/36-The-Mafia-Championship-2016), where the "best" players from various forums are encouraged to join to represent their home forum in a series of mafia games.
Granted like 95% of our player base has come and gone, and we had to settle for sending me, so "Champions" is definitely in quotations. :laugh4: But, since I made it to the final round last time, I'm ineligible. I'll also be assisting with the organization, design, and hosting of the games this year, as well as moderating and rule enforcement stuffs. So that means it's a double-triple no, I can't do it this time around. Do not nominate me.
That means we need someone able and willing who gets some nominations to go to a whole different website and play with some peoples you've never played with before, and try to win every game flawlessly, or else there will be shame on your family name for countless generations, and the .Org will literally stop being a website.
It's a super big deal and kittens will die if you don't attend. (It's a fact, albeit an unrelated one)
So #SaveTheKittens and nominate someone who can put on a less pathetic performance than I did!
Personally, I nominate whoever posts next. But GeneralHankerchief would probably get my nod, assuming we can wipe off the cobwebs and get rid of that terrible mothball smell. He's been here doing mafia stuff since 2006 for crying out loud.
I post next and am ineligible you goof.

Ah.
Well, we'll just change your name to Zackbeard and send you anyway.

(I might move those posts here at some point but that requires moderator-fu and I've got other stuff on my plate atm)

Do we have any other nominations?
I'd like to submit seireikhaan's name for discussion, he has way more practice at being mafia than me (seriously, my performance in the last game isn't enough to convince you guys that I'm terribly rusty as scum?), and plus I know I'll enjoy him privately complaining about the game's minutiae to me over Steam. :laugh4:
I'd also like to submit Csargo for general awesomeness and being the perfect lab-designed counter to khaan, but unfortunately it looks like we can only pick one person.

I'd also be open to El Barto representing us on the one condition that he uses his persona from Pirate Ship III/Rock-Paper-Scissors IV for the entirety of the championship.
seriously, my performance in the last game isn't enough to convince you guys that I'm terribly rusty as scum?
Here's the thing though. There's a misconception that being a good mafioso is about avoiding suspicion, but it isn't. It's about survival (of the TEAM). And you survived long enough in that game, managing to direct however many lynches (can't remember off the top of my head) onto townies, before getting "caught". Anyone who calls that a poor performance is flat-out wrong, you lasted until freaking lylo (or close to it at least) for god's sake. You weren't the survivor, but you didn't put your surviving teammate in a hole - on the contrary, edse was still in a statistically favorable position even immediately after your death.
Quick tips for improving your scum game that are kind of vague and easier said than done:
1. Always put your team's survival above your own. This also applies to your teammates' survival. You don't need to survive to win, and your team doesn't need to sweep to win.
2. Balance the short-term and the long-term. A short-term setback can be a long-term boon, but too many short-term setbacks will sink your team. Conversely, a short-term gain can hurt you in the long run, and a lot of short-term gains can snowball into long-term success.
3. Match the tone and "meta" of your town game. Unless you are brand new, people are going to draw on their experience of how you acted as scum/town in the past, and they will notice deviations from the pattern that may implicate you. Immerse yourself in the role of a townie, and think like a townie. WWTMD? (what would townie me do)
4. Have genuine-seeming interactions with your teammates in public. This is critical for team survival and obfuscating spew. This also applies to bussing, ensure you are bussing in a manner that gives the impression of a legitimate accusation.
Hmm, maybe I should write a guide. There are already enough guides for town play (http://www.mafiauniverse.com/forums/threads/1336-Pirates-of-the-Caribbean?p=262422#post262422).
There's a misconception that being a good mafioso is about avoiding suspicion, but it isn't.
Just to re-iterate this point, in pretty much game I've ever won as scum there's always a parade of "I knew it was you" (i.e. hindsight bias (http://forumserver.twoplustwo.com/showpost.php?p=46654098&postcount=1285)), even when I survive to the end of the game and am never under serious lynch pressure.

Hahahaha. I was actually going to post something along the lines of ‘would they allow a PirateBarto account?’ before I read your post, I don't know… if no one else wants to do it I coould step up as a representative for any of here/CFC/TWC, I can do it, but I'd have to sign out of any games for as long as I'm alive there.
But, regarding the rules:
Regarding lynch mechanics: There will be a deadline each day phase, and the person with the most votes at the end of the day is lynched, unless a majority has already been reached before then, in which case the day ends prematurely.
Days will last 36 hours and nights 12 hours, meaning 48 hours (2 days) per game day. With one exception: The weekend (Friday, Saturday and Sunday) will be one game day (so day will be 60 hours and night 12 hours on weekends).
a) there's a hammer
b) the phases are too short, I couldn't guarantee that I'd get any of those. I have to finish with uni once and for all.
So, seriously, I'm only your last resort. You can get better, or should be able to, at least.

While that's kind of you to recommend me, darling, I'm not sure my style would mesh well over there. I'd have to fairly significantly ramp up my usual early activity, which might throw me off into doing something stupid. That said, if there's really nobody else, I'd consider it.
Besides, you're the One True Founder, the Great Prophet who descended from on high and gave us the stone tablets of Mafia here on the .org.
And I guess if not you, I'll toss out Visorslash or Csargo.

I'd second/third/fourth a khaan or Visorslash nomination as well. I do not have the time to seriously commit to any mafia games atm sadly.
I've don't mind playing again but I would prefer to send someone else who can handle it.
That said, it will be an intense game (sometime n april/may/june)
If I do rep one of either cfc/org I need at least one other person to come with me.

I nominate Tak so he'll shut up already.

03-31-2016, 07:09
I've just checked in CFC, apparently Takhisis has been absorbed into the Tolni supraentity. And their Double A is taking over Takhisis-hood. I have no choice but to conclude you're nominating yourself. Double A + Visor seems like a good duo which gets my backing.

GeneralHankerchief, is he even still around? Apparently so. As the founding member of mafia at the .org, he is known affectionately around those parts as being "over the hill", "decrepit", "desiccated", and "dirt's grandpappy". And yet he is so devoted to that backwater site that no one ever visits that he's never even ventured out to play mafia on another site. He's the grizzled old timer who sits in a rocking chair on the porch every day telling 70 year olds to git off his lawn. He's been through at least seven depressions and four world wars, and affectionately refers to Kaiser Wilhelm I as "that spry young Prussian boy". Please be advised that he may show up dressed like a pirate, wearing an onion on his belt, and that for him, this is perfectly normal. During this event, he may mutter things like "where am I?" or "who in the hell are you people?", and this will demonstrate that, even in his twilight years, he's still the sharpest bulb in our particular knife shed. He may talk about the "good old days", before there were any "roles" like cops added to these games, having to hunt using only wits alone, and how people used to play without alignment reveals, and if they were mafia, they had to write their own murder narrations or else it didn't count. And believe it or not, that's completely true, we had a team of archaeologists look into it. Please handle with care, as he is extremely fragile and we would like his raggedy old bones returned to us in some semblance of being intact, and he definitely has the osteoporosis.

In 2013, he won awards for "Best Mafia Performance", "Best All-Around Player", "Best Scumbag", and came in second for "Most Enjoyable Player" and "Best Townie". When he's town, he is usually killed off early, and when he's mafia he tends to survive to the end of the game.

Bio:
Askthepizzaguy is the only player in history convinced that if he stares at a screen long enough, and types enough words, he can force people to confess their roles in the guessing game known as mafia. He's also convinced that he's good at it, despite mountains of evidence otherwise. Selected for the previous season of mafia championships for absolutely no reason that we can see, he joined the website 2+2 and was thoroughly satisfied with himself for voting nothing but scumbags in one game, surviving to the final lynch, and being lynched instead of convincing anyone at all to lynch even a single wolf, because he's under the impression that is a notable accomplishment. Having driven away all the players from TWC, he achieved a similar goal at his native website known as the Org, and once hosted a mafia game so terrible that mafia is no longer even played on the Straight Dope, and every other website he's been to is losing players at an alarming rate. His most recent accomplishments feature a string of unfinished overhyped and overdesigned games, and seems to understand the word "retirement" much like a professional wrestler does, and continually announces his retirement forever from mafia games on multiple sites, only to still hang around as if anyone cares, and voluntarily join more games no one asked him to join. Basically, he's a clingy, self-absorbed, delusional, overly talkative, emo bitch, so he'll fit right in at 2+2.

Your representative's Championship game started just a few hours ago: http://www.mafiauniverse.com/forums/threads/2394-Season-3-Game-8-Gears-of-War-Mafia-Championship
I want to talk about and spectate the game - what do I do?
If you wish to actively spectate and show support for your representative, then there are two ways of doing this.
1) There will be a private spectator thread on the site for each game that you may request access to. Simply register on the site and PM the user "Thingyman", and I will add you. Feel free to spectate games that your representative isn't in as well. These threads are published after the game completes.
2) We have a spectator chat on Skype, with currently more than 200 people in it. It's very active and fun, I highly suggest you join it if you have Skype. It's way more active than the on-site ones. Just add me: thingyman.
None of these two chats/threads will be spoiled!
Finally, we kindly ask that you refrain from commenting too much on the games in public on this forum, as the other representatives will easily be able to find and read through this (as has happened in the past). I can't control what you do here, but out of respect for the integrity of this Championship, it's best if you don't discuss your reads on your representative or the other players or make comments that could potentially indicate your reads. I.e. even something like "oh man, our representative is totally being his usual self right now" is not good. Speaking very generally about what has happened so far in the game (so as to update your fellow community members) without commenting on it is fine though.
I hope this doesn't seem too strict to you guys, but the game can become very uncomfortable (and unfair) if there is discussion about it outside of the game thread. If you want to have your own private spectator chat, that is of course also totally fine and I even encourage it (I'd love to be added if you make one of these) :)
I wish your representative and your community all the best of luck for this season! :)
