My main problem with MTW is that I'm an obsessive micro-manager and dislike going to war unless i have the best troops available. Just for change I decided to restrict myself to the following rules...

1. ALL auto options on, ie. the only buildings/units available are those the AI builds for you.
2. No mercenaries
3. No retraining

It certainly adds to the challenge and, for me, gives the game a more "medieval" feel. Kings at that time could not centrally manage their economies. The game is also faster.

Has anyone else tried this? It would be a new challenge for those experts who now find the game too easy.

I occasionaly like to do this.

I believe that it gives more of an authentic feel of what parts of governing that a Medieval king would actualy be taking care of. I mean ok so he would be head of sorting out the economy and military, but realy all of the menial tasks like raising units would be given to subordinates and he would concentrate on the more important matters of state, like invading......

I've never used the auto-build option. Does the AI take advantage of local valor bonuses/build a reasonable spread of buildings/concentrate on one set army building type per province etc.?

Well, to put it more simply...how good is the auto-build AI? http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/rolleyes.gif http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

I am currently playing England/Early/Hard. Have taken most of France including Flanders. The AI has built me 3 ships and doesn't seem to want to build anymore. It keeps building siege engine workshops and siege engines at the expense of farming improvements and infantry. It is also very fond of building peasants. In short some of its decisions seem insane. However, its only fair in that the AI is obviously just as bad at making these choices for its own factions.

I am playing no mercs and no retraining as using these would overcome much of the disadvantage of using auto-build units.
