One of the least documented selection/command features of TW is the yellow box created when one holds Ctrl and right clicks. By dragging, the yellow box selects all units that are within it. I have not read many messages talking about its use, so I began to wonder if not many people know about it. It really helps when your units are clumped together and selecting every individual one becomes a chore.
So, do you use it?
I never knew you could do that So I guess the answer is - no I don't, but I may give it a go, now I know about it http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif
Thx http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wave.gif

I've gotten to be a fast clicker http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif
When I play I only ever seem to use the Grouping/Assing hot key function and drawing the formation as sub-groups of the army.
I like the idea that the feature is available if want it tho.

I discovered the magic yellow box back in STW, and after then it took me a week to find out what it did. I always thought that everybody knew about this, until recently when I read some of the movement guides in the Jousting Fields and Shogun Academy, and noticed that they did not include a yellow box section.
And to answer rasoforos' question, I found it by accident. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/shock.gif
Unfortunately for Soly, it is only a battlemap feature.
I use the yellow box quite a bit online. It's really helpful for getting units mixed together selected really fast. It has saved me a few times from getting attacked in a bad postion, as well as getting units in mess to stop chasing to turn to flank another unit close by. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

It's in the manual. On one of the later pages on battlefield mechanics.

Yeah what manual? I think in a fit of excitment when opening the box it went out the window
But i prefer to group normally and don't have too much trouble with units getting caught up in each other.

He, never noticed that in the manual I always find it a chore to select a few units when eveyone is fighting close combat. THANKS
The Manual ?? What's that ? LOL j/k
No I missed this feature completely. Thx a million for pointing this out http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/pat.gif
I tried it already and it can be handy when it's Medieval Total Chaos on the field. Thx again

What is a yellow box?
will be my vote http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/tongue.gif. Thanks for the info though, made me read the manual and boy arent there a lot of grouping techniques there.
Yeah, I actually read the manual and have used the Draw-a-Box. Not as much as I could though, as I am one of those SP players who are wimpily addicted to using the Pause key . Thus, I can just carefully click at my leasure.

I use the yellow box, regularly. It is great for picking up lots of units at once. I can then look at the icons on the bottom to see which units I've picked up and if I've picked up more than I wanted I can deselect them with the icons on the bottom.
nope, never knew i existed, i usually group my units before battle and fight thatway... or i use crtl click to select several units at a time
Use it often to select a messy group quickly, group them, and drag-draw them out to re-org.. much faster than click-select the messy individually. Best use when a group of several units are chasing routed enemy in the same direction.. use the yellow box to select the mess, and ctrl click to leave out the cav or a few (to continue to chase off the map), [G] the resultant units and redeploy --> either draw them out to redeploy, or click on each unit to support nearby h2h (its easier now since you have them grouped).
i never even knew about this one, but i do now http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/tongue.gif

I'll have to join the long line of people who did not know about this feature. If I wanted multiple units to move under one command before I usually just grouped them or held down Ctrl while clicking on multiple unit icons - the yellow square might just be quicker

I never knew about this, this'll come in sooo handy, esp. in big battles&forests [img]http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif . I often click one of my own units and then try to click the nect (CTRL-click) but then I accidently click an enemy unit and mine starts to attack it, often getting slain in the proces of disenganging their own enemy and marching towards the other. (if you can't follow it, i'm sorry, send me an email and I'll explain better http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif ).
Two Thousand and Twenty-two posts, Group Moderator where have you been?? http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/eek.gif  Thought all Shogun vets knew this.
Used to use this feature in the early days with Shogun, but found on a crowded battlefield its too easy to catch an unintended unit when you draw the square; and consequently required too much concentration in the heat of battle.
I prefer to "fast" click or ctrl-click the flags at the bottom of the screen.  GROUPING, now makes this soooo much easier
