Hmm, wasn`t it normal that armies fielded their own musicians? It would be cool if you could build faction-typic musician units and bolster the morale of you men with the right tunes. I would love to bring drums and bagpipes to battle.
Edit: Sorry about the "backs", must have been drawn away by the idea while typing...

i would be quite cool if you could sound the charge, or beat a retreat, instead of just that feeble little trumpet noise you get when troops start to rout.

Hey I like that feeble little trumpet noise...but only when it's coming from the enemy, of course. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Yes it was, but after the time of MTW I believe.

the idea about a diferent routing sound is cool though. the trumpet sound is pretty lame
Question: If a bunch of guys turn around and run like hell to their homes, why would they even be taking the time to blow on a trumpet anyway? I think that you should hear a Monty Python "Run Away Run Away"

i would only support a trumpter if i can shove a enemy head or two down his trumpet after the sound gets annoying.
which for me will be about 2 secs.
i hate trumpets http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/angry.gif

Oh c'mon now. Trumpets are fantastic when you use 'em right. Very stirring. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/joker.gif
true shiro, but trombones are better http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif
now in medievial times there were not any "bands" on the feild, just a drum and fife(sp?, simple flute) and sometimes another instrument.this was a very effective way to keep marching pace, give orders, etc. hence "sound the retreat." this is documented by Niccolo Machevelli, having a set of musicians for every batillion(@500 men).
in the napoleanic age, the band corps went fullfledged, bringing entire ensembles to the feild. this was more for morale, but the drums were still used during the march. it was very dishonorable for an armsman to ecven look at the band the wrong way, however the bands of opposing armies would engage in musical fights, and sometimes fistfights if they setup too close to each other. cannot rember the source here, wrote a research paper on it in 9th grade and....well....thats about all i can rember.
the most similar correlation in modern day is in school football(american)...fitting because football itself resembles war in many ways.
I'd love the ability to bring musicians into battle especially if it meant I could control how long the music played.
I like the battle music in M:TW but it always cuts off 3 minutes into a 50 minute battle. The final heroic struggle during the last moments of the battle is the place that needs music the most, not the first couple missile volleys. Usually by the time my melee units are engaged, the music has stopped playing. In my opinion, the music should continue to play as long as a significant percent of your army is engaged.

Yeah, I totally agree. I'd love to hear more metal clanking when swords lock. It would also be nice to hear periodic screams of anguish. Horses that whinny when they charge. The sound of sparks flying as metal pounds metal. The caw of vultures.
I'd also like to hear periodic semi-random cries. Perhaps "For the Empire" or "For the Glory of Allah" or that sort of thing. Or maybe whimpering or someone sobbing for thier mother.
Likewise, I'd like to see a little more musicial variety during yearly events. The Inquisitor affect of whipping and burning is kind of nice, but it gets a little repetitive. I'd like to see new sounds for each event.
Bagpipes, drums, etc is a GREAT idea. Musicians in general.
It'll also be nice if you could substitute any kind of sound easily for it. Some games actually allow you to substitute mp3 for stuff.
I also missed that exaggerated Japanese accent guy saying "the enemy general is running like a whipped dog" from Shogun. It was hilarious. Medieval's isn't hilarious.

The Spartans were big on battlefield music so maybe we will see musicians in TW3.
