View Full Version : Suggestions for TW3
Lion King

My complints/rants/comments are based in MTW
my wish list for TW3:
1-pity we don’t have those cool blood effects you see in Myth: the fallen lords and its sequels, I just LOOOOOVVEE it, painting the ground red with arms, legs and guts flying around, please include this in TW3, who cares about the kids who wont be allowed to buy it? They are either too young to play such a complex game or they will get it anyways from their parents...
All kids below 18 I know that have a PS2 have GTA3 as well.
2- Better sound effects. Who the hell made those battle FX? Those guys screaming like in those movies they take the piss out of samurais/ninjas/martial arts practitioners. The charge sounds are too shy, looks like a band of mute retards sneaking their way into the battlefield. The music is too short (although good in some cases, such as European mobilize), after one minute or so, its over and then that silence.
3-cleverer decisions of where to spend graphics performance. the castle objects have only a few dozen poligons while the debris that comes from a cataplut rock bouncing around has many hundreds, which cause slowdowns.
4- a more customizable AI manager (play Master of Orion 3 when it comes out soon for some hints, the Betas said it was exellent). i simply love that feature when i "cant be arsed" choosing the buildings,b ut it lacks some customization of what are your goals. Its not letting the AI play the game for you, it is actually giving the lazy player more control of his "governors"
5-3d polygons, 5000 units only? why? i rather have 10 times more troops than 10 times more detail (unless you add my first option). People with screwy computers will never get to play this game, so why make us with fast machines suffer with less units? it will take away one of the things that makes TW exceptional, HUGE armies...
6-Dont try to make the game super balanced in terms of "all fortresses can be sieged, all armies can defeated". i've seen so many sequels being crap because of that... an experienced player with a higly trained/equipped army in decent ground should always beat a newbie with a load of peasants attacking uphill if he has at least 1/50 of the newbie's numbers. some games lower this to 1/3-1/5 and are so boring to play
7- Dont remove luck from battles. Always leave some dice rolls, they are the thing thing that gives much of the excitement in a battle.
8-make it mod-friendly, heaven would it be if all models were .3ds, all textures .bmp/jpg/widely accepted format, all possible stats in excel files (such as in MOO3), from thickness of rain to amount of morale lost when fighting uphill to Ai settings in the battles... ahhh heaven
9- Make the User Interface fast and solid. it might seem stupid but the 5 seconds it takes to go from the choose faction screen back to choose period and back again puts me off playing the game quite often. Little details make the difference between a good game and the best game ever.
well, thats it for now.readers, you are welcome to flame, comment and add your own ideas, going off-topic and thread-jacking is out of bounds though. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/joker.gif

Add realism to the units...
This was specially the coincidence in stw and mtw. I guess the roman units will not need thisæ. What I mean by saying add realism to the units... :
Everytime you build a unit, it has exactly the same stats, and unit size. How often do you think spearmen had exactly 100 and vikings exactly 60 with the same fighting capabilities as the whole other army of also 100 spearmen or 60 vikings? Of course some had to better than others and all units cud not be full.
Let us take the vikings as an example. I do not know ANYTHING about stats (only some modifiers). So the example is for the viking unit:
att: 10, def: 4, armour: 3, speed: 8, unit size: 60.
Instead of these very strict sizes they should change them to:
att: 8-10, def: 3-4, armour: 2-3, speed: 7-8, unit size: 48-62
Of course only one or two things will be changed RANDOMLY when the unit is build. So if att drops by one point the unit size should not drop to 48 but maybe to 58. But in this way we will see are more realistic game, specially if you are a little rpg addicted as well. I cannot stand all the generic units.
as for MP I would love this too, but I guess too many will be mad if one do bad or something...
I have some more suggestions regarding diplomacy... will edit this later..
I'd say instead of men orcs dwarves and elven armies clashing of the battlefields of middle earth.
Also ship battles. (cannons and such)

i would like :
as it was said 'naval battles' , especially with those cool greek triremes
the most important : to see that the game developers care more for the game than they do with MTW . this means that i am not buying the game the first day week or month its out, i m gonna wait for a couple of months because by bying MTW i bought a great but unfinished game.
to Lion King , sou say : 5-3d polygons, 5000 units only? why? i rather have 10 times more troops than 10 times more detail (unless you add my first option). People with screwy computers will never get to play this game, so why make us with fast machines suffer with less units? it will take away one of the things that makes TW exceptional, HUGE armies...
...well my friend if a game is made for the 10% of super new computers and not for the 90% of the 'srewy' ones as you call em then it will sell 10% of what it could sell bacause its a product made for a few people only. Moreover with this way of thiking game companies should only make games to run at the peak of technology , this would make your super computer 'screwy' in 2 months and useless in 6...and you would have to spend a fortune 2-3 times a year. well who would lose?
hmm not trying to be misrable but, iv found out as in the comeing up or the games they really dont listen to you on this topics the reason we do them is too wish to see it in the game hopeing they will see it but i dont belive they pay much attenton to our comments on there future relases. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/frown.gif
hope im not sounding a misrable basturd http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/rolleyes.gif

Never crossed my mind http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif
1) Of course, fully 3D battles (naval and ground). Although
I would need a totally new computer.
2) Another one is my favourite one: ability for mounted archer to shoot while in motion at the cost of accuracy (at least Mongols).

I WANT SIEGETOWERS
i totaly agree with you jaret.
but i dont just stop there.
i. i would like the full reportire of defensive devices.
burning pitch, swing pendulms to knock off seige ladders, moats, impaling bodies on the walls to decrease morale of enemy etc etc etc.
2. i also would like the full complement of seige weapons to. eg ladders, rolling seige towers, battering rams, the regular missile throwers. tunnellers.
3. MEN ON WALLS
the ability to customize your castle more with placement of vats of pitch etc, player decide what the castle defences will shoot at.
and please make the victory condition for taking a castle the smashing in of the keep door. at the moment its a pity you can win the castle battle as attacker by just killing all the visible enemy units even if they happen to be in the first ring of walls. you win the battle but what about the 2nd and sometimes 3rd ring wall ?? and all the men of the unseen garrison defending it. they simply gave up the fight ?? http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/mecry.gif
please please please give us a amazing castle siege experience. And make it so castle battles are a frequent event not a rarity as they are now in the sp camp.
thanks for listening

skip[ naval battles, better focus on a structure where an online campaign either by pbm or whatever is possible. give online battles a goal.
if this is not possible for your marketingguys than make sure u create things which allow us to make one.

It would be nice if you could fight a historical campaign online mags or some sort of mini campaign Even a series of battles linked somehow with casualties and so forth maybe with extra florins to retrain units after battles etc

Well heres a prob with the whole siege towers castle things...
the romans didnae have castles nor did any1 else at those times they had camps so say goodbye to siege towers forever.
I want no bugs i want no 3d i want 30000 troops and i want a discount for the bloody bugs in this one.
Making historical battles and saved custom setups available for multiplay would be great..should have done that a long time ago..
CBR
For the greek armies, I want to see hoplites lock shields and charge as one group. Same with the phalanx. It would be very cool to see a block of men in a phalanx thrusting their spears while moving forward slowly in unison.
Roman armies equiped with pilum, and when they throw them, they stick to the enemies shields and such.
Real time physics engine so armies colliding will actually smash into eachother instead of coming to a complete and harmless stop then fighting. And if greek hoplite armies collide, I want to hear the sound of thousands of pounds of metal clashing.
Different battlecries user selected. Not really important but makes it interesting especially if each army had 5 or so to chose from.
Enemies should be able to hear and army marching forward.
Have armies fight the way they did. For example, a macedonian phalanx was excellent as a group if everyone stayed in formation. They were deadly when the soldiers locked shields and used the weight of the formation to push the enemy. On the contrary, roman legionares should need space between one another and not be massed to fight effectively. Just look at cannae, the romans were packed so tight together they had no room to fight at all.
Instead of having to manually tell a unit where to attack, there should be an option to have a number of selected units attack the enemy in front of them, so they could all charge at once.
Formation editor for making own custom formations and using them online via hotkey.
Almost forgot, need some good classical music war soundtracks, like the one for the opening battle in Gladiator. I found that song on the internet and used it in shogun, man I swear I won everybattle with that music http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

Forget all the effects - they're just candy and if the underlying game is rubbish then they don't make it any better.
My only wish is that the game mechanics are good - as historically accurate as possible at all levels.
the rest will follow

What bout hold points? We at the .com have been discussing about this.
For hold points it would be cool if you could have multiple ones on the same map...lets say you have successfully defended one part of an area and itll be a long time till another enemy force hits that hold point that you successfully defended... meanwhile another point is taking a lot of casualties and the commander asks for reinforcements... i mean once you command one group theres another one with a life of its own... a commander thats smart enough to set up defences... you have a list of options to tell this commander, once you click on the option (Make defences), the commander will make good enough defences for the time that you are commading that other group and then you can come check on the defences to see if they need to make improvements or they need to stop and reinforce another unit.
In those large maps you could also have dispatch units (riders that go and check out how everything is doing and giving out orders... Or mabye make specific units in the game that you could buy for scouting missions... like a group of ten horsemen...
O and what about the option where the enemy general might have a rider give you his sword or a white flag to say that he has surrendered or you can just brutaliy go and kill all of his men that have already surrendered.
And the thing about caputered soldiers... instead of them dissappearing complelty off the map how bout you have tom make fortifications on the battlefield like get any avaible trees in the area and cut them down to make a wall of wood so the enemy cant get out... but in the meantime you would have to make sure that you have spearmen or legionares to cut back any surprise attack to release the prisoners.

Ummm... Do you know what the Colossus of Rhodes was made out of???
It was made out of the remains of the biggest siege tower the world has ever seen. The ancients had plenty of fortifications and plenty of knowledge in siege craft and built a lot of siege equipment including stone throwers and siege towers.

No siege works, no forts and castles???
Come on.
Think of of the siege of Alesia, The Siege of Jeruzalem, The Siege of Massada, Rome was walled, so was Carthage, what to think of Hadrians wall? Most border forts in Syria were made of stone (one still existing)...
The Romans were very skilled in siege warfare. Hannibal hardly attacked any Roman cities due to the fortifications.
I wan't bug free game, and better diplomacy.
Play Europa Universalis II, that's got good diplomacy i tell ya

Diplomacy.
Also diplomacy.
don't forget diplomacy.
Ah, and diplomacy.
Also a bigger focus on trade, especially ground-based.
and sure, diplomacy.
GA that WORK
and diplomacy.
Allowing refitting units into better ones (peasants ==> sergents) to give a second life to generals.
improved diplomacy
mini-campaigns, short enough to be playable in MP(even when the full one remains unplayable).
and various diplomatic actions.

I want winter, spring, summer and autumn, like in Shogun.
I want to have a longer playtime: MTW is MUCH too short to play a good stratetic game.
When you play in late period you have absolutly no time.
Strategic units should be putted together like armies, so I don´t have to move every single strategic unit.
Multiplayercampaign (I understand that it is very difficult to make such a campaign, because if you think about it: If you have four players you need much time to play it, because you have to wait that all battles are finish, before switch to another round.
But who says that you play with foreign people and don´t have time?
If you play with friends or with a clan you have all the time in the world).
Siege must be more challanging: Its very easy to attack a castle, much too easy.
Better diplomacy, so you can move through a land of a friendly faction.
Naval battles.
I want to trate also on land.
Greek should be splitted in parts: Attica, Böotien, Euböa Achaia, mazedonia, Thessalia, Laconia and other.
Longer distance to throw spears.
All important factions: Romans, Greeks, Celts, different german factions like Gots, Allemans, Vandals and other, also Persians, Mazedonians, Hellenistic kings, Egypt, Traker, Old italien people, Karthagians, Petra, Partha, also India (because of Alexander the Great).
Very different formations for each faction.
Like the turtle for romans and NOT for celts or other factions.
Different campaigns: Roman campaign, Alexander the Great, Hannibal, Troian war, Persian wars.
Right number of men in legions, cohorts and other.
Possibility to found new cities (like Alexander did: He founds Alexandria in Egypt for example).
Historical men to play: Alexander the Great, Hannibal, Caesar, Vercingetorix.
No realistic strategy map: A strategy map like the people of the past fought the world could look like.
Time period: From the found of rome (753? b.c.) to 1453 (East-rome=Byzantium).
Many tools to mod the game.
An easy mod-using system.
No landbridges.
