View Full Version : New info on The Viking Invasions
The article at bluenews (http://www.bluesnews.com/cgi-bin/articles.pl?show=510)
Interestingly it seems we will be fighting on an entirely new map of the British Isles and perhaps Denmark and Norway. All those new factions from the british isles could not possibly be squished into the current map.
While some might frown on this, I on the other hand I like this. Now the expansion has a very fitting name. If it was the same map we would see complains about the Vikings not having enough of an impact (haven't we already seen this?) on the southern factions, or that it would be historically incorrect to a great extent.
As it is now we might actually play a "what if" campaign with credibility (not that the current is so wrong).
Also, once again CA managed to bring unknown peoples to our attention. The mainstream people don't know the Pics or old Irish all that well, just like most of us didn't know much about the Samurai before STW. Good to know CA haven't forgotten what made them great.

Sounds good. Hopefully it will be possible to play the Angles of Northumbria, would be nice to stear my own ancestors to victory. I'm glad they focused on the Viking invasions of the British Isles its a rich subject and, thanks to the limited geographic area, will allow a more detailed campaign (I always felt the Medieval Total War campaign was too broad brush).
Yes, it will be great with more provincedetail (province in the MTW sense). But I fear it will take one year to walk around again. That will be horrible. Uhhhh http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/redface.gif

I guess a Harold Godwinson campaign would have to have William invading in 1067, and Harald Hadraada in 1065, so that Harold's 'lighting march' actually allows him to fight both armies. Maybe they will fix the turns to represent a month instead.

And people say the Devs don't listen to our suggestions. If the article pans out then it sounds like they are addressing many of our concerns in the add on. I, for one, am looking forward to it

I take it this is what you are talking about?
I have just begun to wonder what changes to MP there will be made...

Flaming arrows and boiling oil during sieges, sounds pretty cool. I wonder if there will be defenders on the walls too.

So the map is gonna be entirely of Engand and Ireland?Kinda like STW with the focus on one particular island I can live with that. Boiling oil sounds cool, just like Stronghold. But didn't they mention something about it being in Scandinavia as well?
although i do think of mysel as a history buff, i haveno idea what a Saxon Fyrdman is...
The Fyrd was the English Saxon raised army. There were the Fyrd and the Lesser Fyrd, the Fyrd were those you would see at Hastings while the Lesser Fyrd was practically every ablebodied man.
Sounding good.
I hope they add greater detail to the unit sprites and don't just have the generic peasants with different weapons like we have currently with 'Vikings', 'Highlanders' etc etc
One of my few beefs with MTW was that dozens of distinct units looked exactly the same as my peasants.
Cheers

the addon Sounds very cool.
Got to laugh how the press release says
"ACTIVISION'S MEDIEVAL: TOTAL WAR™ EXPANDS NORTHWARDS WITH VIKING INVASION™ EXPANSION PACK "
god activision are arrogant.what about CA ? and i know enough about press releases to know that what blue news have done is just copy the release word for word.
i hope all the people who said the addon was going to totally suck can all come and apologise now. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/tongue.gif
it looks like we are getting expanded sieges which will bevery cool and i like the scout idea.
i also am encouraged by Tim ansells words "Players can now sweep west from Scandinavia to raid, pillage and conquer..." hopefully this means that raiding parties have been included. finally i can smash and retreat with out getting a good runner vice
so far it all looks good. will wait for more details before i start jumping for joy but i can defeintly say that IMHO it will not SUCK
edit. just reading the release again and noticed the
"organ gun "
is that where you get to rip the organs out of the bodies of your prisnors (while they are still alive http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif )
then put all the bloody parts on a catapult and chuck them at the remaining enemy ?
http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smokin.gif I am going to like the "organ" gun

Viking Invasion does sound like alot of fun. While I was hoping for something that expanded upon all the current factions in Medieval (while concentrating on the inclusion of the Vikings) this is by no means unwelcome news
Quote[/b] ]Medieval: Total War -- Viking Invasion introduces new features that will be welcomed by fans of the franchise Players can now plan reinforcements and scout enemy formations before taking to the field from a new pre-battle screen. In addition, there will be new playable factions and a new heavy weapon in the shape of the fearsome Organ Gun.
Fantastic stuff. However, my biggest concern is whether these extra features (flaming arrows and boiling oil included) will be incorporated into the original Medieval as well. I'd hate to think the original game won't benefit from the new features.
Now that the proverbial cat is out of the bag I would also like to get an official word or two from the developers on a few things. Will Vikings Invasion feature improved strategic and tactical AI? Have additional army formations been added to the preset list? Will the expansion address some bugs and issues the previous patch left unaddressed?

When I heard that an organ gun would be included, I remembered a curious render at the .com that I saw pre-game. After confirming that it truly was an organ gun, I went and hunted it down.
From the dank depths of the .com I give you the Organ Gun (http://www.totalwar.com/community/medieval/rend4.htm)
This means that we finally get a short-range anti-personnel artillery piece. I expect a large reload time, due to the many barrels.
BTW do any of you expect adjusted Early thru Late stats or additional units for these periods? The Organ gun could be a hint.
bleh to the expansion ...............
i have gone back to total annihilation:) an old game from 97
i keep my an eye here, out of boardem and the fact that i mis spent 90 odd bucks on this game
and when this rome total war comes out ill watch the forums
and if its worth the funds..........
Im a rts freak I adore the idea behind these total war games I realy do, I hope the next one is done right
you have burnt my fingers for ever unfortunately.
I am very weary of any product you sell henceforth.
good luck to you and make the next game a "keeper" please
Hmm Organ gun
Well I do hope they adjust some of the units..I dont know if we really need more units, we already have loads of units that we dont use (in MP that is)

Doesn`t sound bad, but I hope they will also add a few improvements to the game (diplomacy comes to mind).
They must be sorting things for the normal game ...
Vikings and gunpowder were separated by a few centuries...
organ gun might mean that the game somehow goes well into the currnet medieval period.... nice, long .... campagin??
or perhaps it also adds several units to the existing campagin

well it starts in 1800's and mtw says vikings where about in the 1400's so maybe its a gun but i think its a musical moral thingy like the bagpipe but a giant mouth organ???

I doubt you have to fear anything.
Remember MI? Well the improvements and balances were carried over into STW as well. And that Organ Gun does seem to be a Late weapon.
