Russian campaign.
Post-patch, High start period, Hard difficulty.

Here's what happened: Last night, I saw my allies, the Danes, lose a battle on their home turf Denmark to our mutual enemy the French.
Well, while the French were subsequently besieging the Danes there, I decided to help out my allies and invade Denmark.
When I hit End Year, the parchment read that the Danes sally forthed from the castle to assist ME in kicking the French out.
The Danes and I easily decimated the French and when the battle was over, a parchment popped up saying "The Danes appreciate my help and express their gratitude" (or something like that).
HOWEVER (and this is the problem), guess what happened to the Russian army I sent in to that battle (and won?). The next parchment I read says THE DANES are demanding a ransom for my Russian soldiers...even though
1) WE won the battle and
2) the Danes are my allies...why should they "capture" my guys after I bailed them out of a jam?

Well, I paid the ridiculous ransom because I didn't want to lose my damm good 8 star general, but I'm left wondering whether this is a bug or did I miss something here?

This ever happened to anybody else?

Hey Spetz Natz

Guess what? I´m from Denmark and I can tell you the answer - we´re all like that here in this country
That´s why the tourists are fleeing the country http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

No seriously - it looks like a bug that you should forward to the designers...

hmm. thats not supposed to happen http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif are you now at war with the Danes?

Ive assisted allies in lifting sieges several times, but I dont know if my ally ever assualted the seigeing army at the same time my army moved in. Ususally they just cower behind their castle walls and let me do the dirty work http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smokin.gif

could be because the Danes sent in an army at the same time you did. which is a bug of course http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

Yeah, it is the same as you going on a Crusade, then in a foreign country you get the message that another Catholic faction has captured the province... Too bad, but now you need to buy back the troops.

In Denmark I guess your troops had no way out since the Danes had lost the previous battle (the port was pillaged).

That's happened to me a few times. If you don't have an open route back to one of your provinces, your army gets captured. It kinda annoys me though, I'd like some kind of option....should I pay the ransom, or should my cut off troops just womp on this stupid little province that needed my help and now refuses to return them? http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Think of it as helping your ally deal with the expense of food, lodging, and transportation for X-thousand armed and dangerous men whom have no way home http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Dijeeh - the only time I've been able to assist an ally is if 1) I attack an army that is seiging their castle or 2) if we simultaneously attack the same prov (which is nuetral or controlled by someone else at the time of attack). I wish attacks with allies could be coordinated better. Sometimes I like to save an ally to keep a buffer or to return a favor. Escpecially that rare ally that sticks with you when every other faction has declared eternal war on the player.

If you want a battle with more factions in it, well Shadewolf found something that might help.

Pick an enemy that shares a border with you and your ally (rebels are good for this) then attack with a small force, a force that is capable in battle but not very big (if enemy is 1500 you attack with 600) then you get a better chance of your ally sending forces to help.
I was very surprised to find this when I attacked some rebels and both the Polish and Hungarians came to my help.

Also, the besieged castle needs to be in the hand of your ally. The besieger can be neutral to you. Then just attack, just make sure the castle has at least 1 more year of siegetime.
Then you should be able to help them.
But you can't capture a province that was your ally's from the enemy and give it back. Neither can you cross allied lands.

Those two last points would be great. Returning a captured allied province & agreeing a right of passage.

Diplomacy, Diplomacy, Diplomacy, Diplomacy. Hopefully more in RTW. *fingers crossed*
