Hilarious battle against AI

The Egyptians attacked a rebel province after I just saved. Just for kicks, I decided to save to another slot, reload, join in, have fun, then reload the other game.

At first, I decided to watch them duke it out but the rebels split their forces with horse archers shooting at me. I used my steppe cavalry and one alan mercenary and I would place them in a position so that the horse archer would skirmish away to an Egyptian unit. I didn't even attack most of the time and let them take care of each other.

Eventually, the Egyptian side quit and I dealt with the remaining rebels. It was so funny leading the horse archers shooting at me to their doom.

I enjoy the rare three-sided battles. I usually do the same as you and let the other two sides beat each other up, then I march in trumpets blaring and troops fresh to steal the glory by beating the fatigued, wounded survivor. Great fun except when it's two enemies allied against me. Those are tough, but thankfully also rare. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/frown.gif

Three ways are pretty cool, cept for that one where I was attacked by the Almohads. Was set up nice on a hill, with the Italians coming in to aid me, though very small force really, me as Byzantine. The Almos split up their forces, squashed the Italians then turned on me. I barely made it passed this fight, though it happened to be the bulk of their army so they were doomed afterwards.

As The Byz I invaded Mongol-held Armenia. My Turkish allies joined in, as did a passing English Crusade which threw in it's lot with the Mongols.

Had a four way battle, me (as Danes) vs Italians, Germans & Hungarians. Very well co-ordinated invasion I thought and if they had co-ordinated their attacks as well they would have pasted my outnumbered force to the wall. As it was I won with minimal casualties (although had to sacrifice some cav units) but I remember the feeling of dread I had when I figured out I had three armies marching at me.

Even considered a retreat but I thought that would be cowardly for my best general and decided win or die was more fun.

I'd like to see more of these types of battles in SP.

How do you get 3 way battles?

I can only create them in Custom Battle.

In campaign, my allies have never helped me in a battle, and when i attempt to help them, my dumb games tries to declare war on my allies.

There are a couple of ways.

The first is easiest. If an ally nearby is being besieged, march your army into the province. Your besieged ally will sally forth and help you in the battle. Has to be an ally and won't work if they are neutral.

Another way is if two or more enemies attack the same province. Or perhaps you invade a rebel province and another faction joins in. Whoever has the most units in the province at end of fight gets the province.

Also an ally can come to your aid if you are attacked although I have never had this happen to me.

Mostly you have to wait for other factions to move before it will happen. One thing to try is attack a rebel province with a smaller force and with an allied army nearby. Chances are they will pitch in two. You can even attack your ally mid battled and I am wanting to try a massed charge into the rear of an allied army to see the effect just for fun http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif
