I believe over the years some orgahs have posted in the Gameroom to try to get some informal chess tournaments going. It's been a few years since last time, and I've had a renewed interest in Chess lately. Anyone else interested? We could possibly get an Org club going on chess.com to play some informal games... or even a tournament. Who knows?

So, if anyone's interested, post your chess.com user name and I can get a club started and send invites.

Csargo.I think you mean Csargo7... judging by the profile pic that's you anyhow. Invite sent.

I seem to remember I played a game or two of chess against you, years ago. I also seem to remember getting a pretty sound beatdown. Hopefully I can repay you. :stare:

I just tried my first game on the site, failed to notice my bishop adjacent to his checking queen was capable of capturing it, the queen escaped, I lost many pieces, was soon mated.

In terms of computer programs I must be symbolized as the monkey wearing a beanie hat. :hide:

You're right.

I've played pretty rarely recently, so I'm extremely rusty.

I can't count the number of times that I've missed hanging pieces. Nothing like a clock ticking down to make you lose all sense. :wall:
Give me your username there if you'd like an invite. I made Csargo an admin too, so (I think) he can extend invites too.

SwordsMaster, novice- invites sent. :2thumbsup:

I've never made a club on chess.com before, so it's all pretty new to me. But, it looks like there's some interesting features we can try if we get a few members. At the very least, it should be neat to play some informal games with Orgahs.

HAven't played regularly since college! I played a lot back in college, and then pretty much forgot about it until a year or so ago. It's become one of my more favorite hobbies lately- it's fun to see the (slow) improvement that comes with practice and more gameplay.

How does this chess.com site work? Are people supposed to be playing live, or is there a special mode for playing a game as if we were playing by (e-)mail, each in their own time over some days or weeks?

Hmm-hmm.

In the last ten years I must have played as many games, half of them in one sitting. It'll be nice to catch up. I'll let you know when I've made an account. I'll have to think of a name.

I'm still working out how badly I can perform before I have to withdraw from Org life forever.

Swordsmaster, novice- I sent out challenges for 1 move/day unrated games if you're interested. I think I enjoy 10 minute live games most, but it's probably not practical to expect people in different locations to be online at the same time.

Looking at your rating, novice, I expect I'll be crushed... but maybe I'll learn a thing or two. :sweatdrop:

Got a chess.com username? Let me know and I'll invite you to the Org club. Also, if we get enough interested members, I'd like to try vote chess (https://www.chess.com/votechess) sometime. Sounds interesting.

Team chess? Seems like you'd need a lot longer than 10 minutes to play it out, if it's not just one person carrying the team.

Oh yeah, definitely. My understanding (having never played it) is that vote chess would play out with 1+ days per turn. You discuss your ideas via message board and everyone votes on their preferred move- the most votes is the move that gets made.

I declined the challenge by mistake, and then reissued it, as a two-day rated game though. Feel free to decline that and reissue the original challenge.

I haven't played daily games in ages, so my rating is probably inaccurate. Also, we played with opening explorers allowed, but tablebase and engine assistance was obviously banned. Do you want to allow opening explorers?

Xiahou
08-15-2017, 13:19
I was going to say that I'd rather not, but I'm fine with it if you want to. Daily games with opening explorer can be educational.

Let me know whichever you decide- I'm ok with it.

I sent you a club invite.

Anyone can send challenges to anyone else. For Daily/Correspondence games, just click on the club member list (https://www.chess.com/clubs/members/the-org) and click on the Chessboard icon near their username.

Live games seem a little tougher to setup... I think you both have to be in the liveplay section of the site and you have to create a challenge and put in the username. I've only managed to get those going with Csargo so far.

I love games like this. I play the London System/Mason Attack a lot, so when I saw him mechanically making the early moves I decided to mess up his plans for him.

For some reason, the 'iframe' formatting does not work outside the Gameroom.

Well, maybe it does, but I've tested in the Watchtower, Frontroom, and Backroom, and it doesn't create a display, for this Chess.com embed or for Youtube videos.

Either the post preview shows only the text of the formatting, or (in Chrome) the page shows a BLOCKED_BY_XSS_EDITOR error.

So this is another game I really liked (probably because I won convincingly :beam:)

<iframe border="0" frameborder="0" allowtransparency="true" width="603" height="465" src="//www.chess.com/emboard?id=3656524"></iframe>

So 11. Kd1 apparently was a "bad" response to 10 ...Qxe4, based on computer analysis. Luckily, the pawn move he made next pretty well lost it for him. Can anyone see what the "best" response to 11. Kd1 was?<iframe border="0" frameborder="0" allowtransparency="true" width="603" height="465" src="//www.chess.com/emboard?id=3656556"></iframe>

The only other move is Kf1 right?

El Barto

Black moves the knight forward and then… then what did White do?

Xiahou
10-09-2017, 23:25
The only other move is Kf1 right?Yup. Which would've avoided the Ng4 threat, but would have deprived me of opportunity to play the 'oh so tempting' Re1 pin.

Black moves the knight forward and then… then what did White do?With 11... Ng4, Black is threatening a mate in one by playing Nxf2 next turn. My idea was to pin the black Queen using my Rook. Ng4 would put that idea out the window, and instead I would've had to try to deal with a pretty strong mating threat. Luckily he didn't see it, and I won. :sweatdrop:

Not sure if it is entirely on topic but I've been watching agadmator's (https://www.youtube.com/user/AGADMATOR) chess videos lately and they've been thoroughly enjoyable. Can't quite translate what I've learnt yet though. :laugh4:

Would definitely recommend it for quick, easy to listen analysis of games.

Yours isn't the first recommendation for agadmator that I've seen. I'm going go look him up on Youtube and add some of his videos to my watch list..

I've enjoyed watching a bunch of Hutch's chess streams. He also had a pretty good series being coached by GM Tal Baron (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KoBAr08PApk).
Lately, I've been watching John Bartholomew's videos. His Fundamentals (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ao9iOeK_jvU&t=3s) series is a good starting place.

And, of course, I can watch almost anything by Anna Rudolf (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=41Nf3OTwxIw&t=1m39s). ~D

Not sure if anyone else is, but I'm still playing with some regularity. I've improved my blitz rating by close to 200 points since I last posted- currently at 1338, with a peak of 1375. Not a master by any means, but it apparently puts me in the 85th percentile for blitz on chess.com.

I found another good chess resource- chessable.com (https://www.chessable.com/). It's a site that is designed around drilling you on various openings. Some advanced repertoires are pay only, but there's enough free content to keep my busy for a long time. It drills you using spaced repetition to help you memorize moves. But I think the real benefit as you start to learn openings, is getting a sense of what the moves are trying to accomplish. Once you start to see the "why"s, you can start improving.

I haven't noticed any activity in the club, but is anyone still playing otherwise?

That does sound interesting. Worth posting a thread in the Technology forum? I use Linux Mint almost exclusively at work and run it on my laptop at home. I'm slowly learning more and more about the OS as I use it.

Trying to improve at chess can seem like a lot of effort, but I think it's good brain training for other things I do and it's very satisfying when you can see improvement over time....

Hmmm… I haven't ever posted in the Technology forum, but it might be worth it. I don't know that much about Linux -I know enough to know how little I know. But then most people who use Windows know nothing about it either.

My CS teacher in high school (I was never any good) used to say: "Windows and Mac are learner-friendly, but user-unfriendly. Linux is learner-unfriendly, but user-friendly." (Sounds a bit elitist come to think about it)

Hehehehe, I've just updated Blender to the latest available version and fated myself to weeks of pain (they've changed the controls from the last, admittedly outdated, version I did know how to operate).
