Osprey Men-At-ARms series published a handbook entitled ``Saracen Faris``. It basically described muslim cavalry which I think was armoured.

Yes, my search came up quite empty besides plenty of sites for cavalry in the American Civil War.
But what I understood was that they were some type of heavy cavalry for the Saracens against the Crusaders. It is also mentioned that they used bows now and then, so perhaps it is a Heavy Horse Archer unit with lances??? That would be interesting.

From the pic in that link they would appear to be hvy horse archers with some meelee ability.

From what little I've read Faris Cavalry should be something in between Byzantine Cavalry and Pronoiai Allagion. They should NOT be expected to give the Muslim factions an equivalent to the heavy cavalry of the Catholic factions.

The Saracens begin to withdraw from to withering barrage of insults, while the Frankish army laughs louder and louder, knights falling from their horses, spearmen hanging over their shields.
The last Saracen soldier, lowly Peasant notices the laughing mass, but shakes his head...

'al-faris' means 'horseman' in arabic. Faris cavalry was an elite was, heavy-coated with lances and swords (though as for sword, I'm not sure). It consisted of noblemen and headed by general of royal family.
Faris cavalry is very similar to Sipahi, and may be considered as analogue of western knights.
