View Full Version : Mini Mafia Game Gunsmith Mafia (Monty Mafia #1)

Montmorency
10-26-2017, 01:29
GUNSMITH MAFIA

It is 17th-century London and the lucrative gunsmithing industry is booming. A group of prospective apprentices has been acknowledged by the Guild management,
and you now stand among them before a stocky, rough-skinned old woman in her domain.
Running the family business since her widowing, she sells off her product local when she isn't getting a pound-per-musket on her Crown contract.

"Ho there, lads and lasses! If you're here, then you must have been assigned to my tutelage by that Worshipful Company of Gunmakers. Call me Master Montmorency.
I'm here to teach you the craft, meaning I own your skins for the next 7 years! Anyone feeling afflicted by doubt may leave immediately, never to work in this town again."

No one moves.

"Good. Think of the next few weeks as an orientation, where we weed out the weak and talentless. I still own you though, so if you drop out you still gotta pay me that satisfaction."

One boy raises his hand. "Master, will you handle the food and board? I'm already hungry and tired and I've no money."

Master Montmorency drops him with a knee.

"We'll have none of this jejunery! Do I look like your marm or your maid? You have to work for your keep here, and you lot's first order of the day can be to fix our supper.
Once we conclude, I can think about scheduling all your beatings. And don't make me give you too many beatings, lest you tax my fortitude and slow down the smithing work - which calls for more beatings.
It's a vicious cycle. "

The master is already exiting the storefront, but at the threshold to the workshop she abruptly turns,

"By the way, I ought let you kids know that this town's crawling with French and Spanish spies, and there's nothing they'd like so much as to disable English arms production.
All us Masters have Lvl 99 Shooting skills and the special notice of the constables, but you might well be smothered like defenseless babes in the crib.
Next to gunpowder accidents and the plague, we lose more promising gunmakers like that. And pub stabbings, and street stabbings, and the flux. Work-life balance burnout. Absconsion to the New World.
Well, I'm sure it's happened. Must be why the Crown is shifting production to the blasted Midlands, fewer foreigners... If it warranted a guess, my eyes would linger on the swarthy middle-aged fellows in this group -
but officially, the Guild practices non-discrimination on the basis of age (good for me!), so keep that to yourselves."

"Now get to doing the chores or whatever. "

She's gone.

You're alone now...

Game Setup

This is a vanilla "mini" mafia game calling for 7 (1 Mafia) or 9 (2 Mafia) players. I may or may not introduce some mechanical tweaks if it's 9 players.
Phases are 24-24 hours set around 7:00 PM ET , except for D1, which is 48 hours.
Standard lynch (no hammer). Ties at deadline are ended by sudden death (i.e. first tie-breaking vote counts). Alignment reveal on death.
Town wins when all threats to town have been eliminated. Mafia wins when they reach parity with town.

Game authorized by Beskar.

Rules

1. Vote a player each day, e.g. Vote: Visorslash. Vote: No Lynch is allowed. Vote: Abstain is not allowed. Unvoting is noted, but not required. Stick to this format. Nicknames are acceptable as long as they are not obscure.

2. Living players may PM each other if they like. CC the host.

3. You may not post screenshots of or directly quote your role PM or mod communication. You may discuss real or invented conversations between players. This need not apply to our game as there are no roles outside Mafia.

4. You may not delete posts in the game thread for any reason at any time. You may make modest edits within 2 minutes of posting. The primary aim is to avoid votes or EOD posts (-1 hour) being modified, so for any edited post with a vote the vote is considered invalid. Keep that in mind. (Montmorency, keep that in mind.)

5. If you die, you may continue to post for 12 hours.

6. Do not communicate in the thread during the night phase unless you were the lynch (Rule #5 applies).

7. You may ask me privately to be spoiled upon death, after the 12-hour period.

8. Going a day-phase without speaking and voting puts one at risk of replacement. PM me if you cannot continue to participate. Do not discuss the nature of substitutions.

9. You are expected to behave civilly. Follow Gameroom and Org rules.

Regardless of numbers, the game is set to begin on Sunday, November 5, at 7 PM ET. With 5 players I will reduce day length to 24 hours, though even if we fill out I will consider a 48-hour D1 with subsequent 24-hour days. Is that a problem?

Day 1

The day has begun and you share a pot of pottage for breakfast. Wouldn't you like some more.

"I haven't anything to teach you that you lot could hope to understand.
Your task for the day is to pester the clerks at the Board of Ordnance until something useful leaps out of their mouths.
Then hang about the wharves and find out if the Italians have my iron shipment. Don't you dare touch that iron though, moving iron is contract work for the teamsters."

Nine shuffle out onto the muddy street.

The game has now officially begun and you can start posting and voting.

Worth noting that even though today is 48 hours, the later days are not. Given we only have 2 mislynches to work with, we need to talk a bit to give us some chance of getting correct reads so that we can win in must lynch (or preferably before).

So, try to discuss any kind of read you have, even if it is minor, just because that information can help us to read you.

For example, I don't think there is anything alignment indicative about Fenn's entry and El Barto is doing his usual wacky thing but I think the "Soon gonna fix that" part of his post noteworthy in that it feels like a little out of place. Whether it is villagery or wolfy I can't say just yet, but I've noted it for now.

(Now, use this to read me villagery so I die N1, thanks. :P)

Yeah...I've got nothing. Champ's being weirdly recalcitrant, but at least he's posting. Kagemusha has just one the one drive-by Choxorn pressure vote and Double A has nil. I don't think it's a given that lurkers are less likely to be scum when the thread overall is so quiet.

On the one hand, the reasoning is sound: don't reward non-participants. But on the other hand, a no-poster is much more likely to be a vanilla than a wolf, in my experience.

End of Day 1

The destination is located in the imposing and heavily guarded complex of the Tower of London.
The guards vehemently refuse the entry of the inauspicious group, until you mention that Master Montmorency wants you to duck around the place as a field trip...
Why did that succeed?

Having mobbed the Board of Ordnance for a few hours, your gaggle is chased away by angry men with rods.
Conspicuously, a pair of the apprentices, the old ones, seem to be folding up papers with information copied from the office's ledger-books. That can't be right, can it?

With experience from your previous life as a docks urchin, you lead the others to the Wharves, where the longshoreman are plied to entertain your questions about the iron shipment.
Eventually you manage to locate a promising quay, and some bundled sacks.

"I wonder if that's the goods what the Master lady wants a report on", someone pipes up.

One of the mature men saunters up to the most reserved apprentice - Double A - and claps his shoulder.

"Boy, wee naught knowe if even zis be they irown we looking four. Vhy daun't yuo fill up zees baks, see vhat really in is zhem?"*

The man smoothly shuffles backward into the crowd, and Double A shrugs. A few other voices urge him on.

"But wait!" one protests. "Only Champ is equipped to show us the way. He's a champ!"

"Yeah lol I could do it, but that's not a good reason to ask me. I'm not sure about this whole business either way." His nonchalance and good cheer confound you all.

Double A...

...

...

"Oi, you laggards make way out of the docks!"

That's some salty sailor. For some reason, you all decided to take a nap right on the wharf and have been impeding traffic.

"Too right my good man." El Barto demands that Champ get up and take care of things.

,,,

Everyone stares at Barto.

...

"God's bowels, get on with it!" Barto forces Double A onto his feet.
He dizzily reaches out to catch his balance and gets a good handful of the questionable material. It seems quite solid through the fabric. Double A opens his mouth...

"MIO CONTRATTO! NO TOUCH-E!!!"*

Half a dozen burly Italian haulers spring out as though from nowhere and surround the hapless Double A, beating him to a bloody pulp. After the rage of the moment has abated, they pull back.
Double A twitches his hand in your direction, crumpled as he is on the ground.
He's alive!

Unfortunately, one of the Italians grabs him by the legs and swings him out into the filthy Thames. Double A doesn't have the strength left to fight it. Also, he can't swim.

Double A has drowned.

He was

An innocent young apprentice.

It's such a tragedy, you all agree to get back to the Master immediately.

...

"What's that, you lost one? Useless bunch... And you - ", Montmorency points at the man who goaded Double A into insulting the Italians. "Why have you got all that paperwork on you?"
Snatching the copies of Ordnance data, she glances over it and snaps "This I can use. I don't know why or how you have this, but I can use it.
Good work man, uh... if you're a grown man who can read and write, why have you elected to come under my tutelage?"
Sputtering, the foreigner and his associate grab at the documents. The Master slaps them down for their trouble. They sulk away to a corner and whisper darkly...

Everyone is feeling very tired today. Master Montmorency's arthritis is creeping up. You mope here and there throughout the building. Are we all down with the sickness? Kids and their plagues...

Logic hasn't got up yet.

The Master summons her apprentices.
"Seeing as we're all in the doldrums, and city too, today we just do the usual thing one does when homestuck with lethargy: fart around and be miserable until we feel like doing something else.
And yeah, looks like Logic shall not be rising henceforth. Summon the corpse-wagons sometime."

As the neighborhood tries to manage the chaos and suffering, the rest of the City doesn't care. They have their own portion of suffering.

The Plague is in London.

Though the foreign saboteurs did not survive their mission, they more or less accomplished their goal in ironic fashion.
It's not clear if they caused or facilitated the spread of this outbreak. Maybe it was the damn dirty Italians.

Or the Dutch. They employ half the Italians anyway. We should have another war with those dodkins.

Well, that one was one of my least satisfying victories ever. I was barely even doing anything and that was still more than my inactive teammate and half the town.

On my vote for Kagemusha yesterday- I voted him at first because it seemed like everyone else was going to and I figured I might as well get on the train and bus him. Then Fenn and Barto started going after Sooh as well, and my original plan was to last-minute switch, lynch Sooh, and end the game then and there, but I was busy around the deadline and forgot to come online. Not like it mattered- I got totally unintentional bussing cred from that, all that really happened was that the game pointlessly continued another day.

I think the timing of the game was bad, in combination with the setup (mini vanilla). It took a long time to get running because of GH's hiatus and general board inactivity, and by the time it did I suppose some of the potentially most active players (Kage and Sooh) pretty much dropped out.

Because of the inactivity I couldn't enforce rules well. Non-voting and Barto's instance of night-talk incurred no penalty, and Kage and Choxorn were scum, so.... In fact, the N1 Logic kill was randomized because I never received orders; terrible situation even if you have replacements in the wing, which I did not.

I believed, since the Org revival began attracting high-posters, that a core of 'super-poster' players could by the centrifugal force of their activity bring up the average post count in general, and induce participation. I figured that this was how games sustained explosions of activity in the first half. Seeing Visor attempt to jump in swinging fizzle out on D1, I'm not so sure anymore.

Still confirmed that writeups are not my strong suit. Some of them were overly mean to the players or on-the-nose; I apologize. Frequent typos, formatting and other sloppiness as well. I should have just used BB centering, rather than indents that look horrible on mobile. Etc.

I would like to discuss the rules, namely:

1. Sudden death. Worked terribly for this game's size and activity.
2. No night-talk and 12 hour dead-talk. In this game these settings were irrelevant, but the idea going in was to emphasize the roles of the newly-dead in the thread. Clearly time-locking means nothing if the player is not active or has nothing to say, but I wonder if it's a worthless concept in itself.
3. Player PMs, for a little fun on the side. Unless I'm wrong and someone had communications, it seems like the PM system remains something no one feels the need to use; probably superfluous for very small games anyway.

Here's the QT (https://www.quicktopic.com/52/H/DMkPzmPN2JhM). There's no activity of note.

Kage was inactive, and like I said in the QT and in my last post, I was often busy around the deadline, and I just completely forgot to send in an order that night.

Hard to be activity when one of the two scums vanishes immediately after the start of the game.

My kill was Random? That explains it! There was no way I was first priority death with my showing day 1.

Great job Kage and Chox: you weren't on my radar. I was convinced it was Sooh most of the game.

Well, that one was one of my least satisfying victories ever. I was barely even doing anything and that was still more than my inactive teammate and half the town.
I didn't have it in me to try and nag everyone into doing something. I tried, at least, but I'm not the best at it.

It was a comedy of blunders: I intended to switch back to Kagemusha in the last five minutes before EOD (and hopefully fish out who really was Kage's partner) but things happen and I came back to see that Monty had already ended the phase. Fenn had changed his vote and you never got the time to backstab us so we lucked out.

And Kagemusha should upvote this post.

Sudden Death is always sort of weird. You have to have some way to break ties.

The 12 hour dead thing is interesting, but unless the dead have useful information it's just going to be random townie opinion, etc. If they had a role and could talk about that then that would be useful to the town, but then that sort of screws with mafia.

PMs are entirely based on the game, Capo/Pirate Ship where communication privately is key to doing something, otherwise there's no point to PM instead of posting in thread imo. There has to be incentive/reason to use the PM system, which I don't think this game had anything like that, but I could be mistaken.

No, all the good guys died, then the bad guys died too because.

Here's the Role PM:

You are French (Choxorn) and Spanish (Kage) spies, respectively, sent to London to kill English apprentices toward long-term industrial sabotage.

You are not technically working together, but as allies of convenience for this mission you are effectively a team.

Use this Quicktopic (https://www.quicktopic.com/cgi-bin/post.cgi?mode=disp_reply&forum=52&topic=DMkPzmPN2JhM&rand=6unTwi6u6nuWa) to communicate.

Good luck.

See the various discussions here (https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showthread.php?149504-Gameroom-policy-discussion-thread&p=2053763620#post2053763620), but my thought was to balance any potential desire by dead townies to make an impact with the momentum of the Mafia through its kill/lynch scheme.

But this can only have meaning if dead players (to say nothing of the rest of the game) are active.

Think the setup is fine, just really dependent on the players who sign up. Timing might've been bad though, yeah, people seemed to want a bit of a break.

Ouch. Did you consider making it a no kill because no submission?

I think Barto and Fenn and so on could be a part of that, its just when so much of the thread otherwise is so inactive there isn't much to do. You really can't do much with half of the game missing.

Still confirmed that writeups are not my strong suit. Some of them were overly mean to the players or on-the-nose; I apologize. Frequent typos, formatting and other sloppiness as well. I should have just used BB centering, rather than indents that look horrible on mobile. Etc.

Writeups seemed fine to me.

Moreso the activity I think.

Maybe allow them to talk for the whole next day phase?

3. Player PMs, for a little fun on the side. Unless I'm wrong and someone had communications, it seems like the PM system remains something no one feels the need to use; probably superfluous for very small games anyway.

Some thoughts in here.

Really I think this game was just a victim of (as you say) bad timing and then a playerlist of inactivity. You replace kage with zack, double a with gh, etc and suddenly you get a much more active game.

Sorry for dropping the ball on this. The game was so inactive it was demotivating to me, and then I was all of a sudden in a mash, so I forgot this game existed and contributed a lot to the inactivity myself.
