It looks very interesting. Something to get out teeth into.As for the new campaign map - wow
http://www.totalwar.com/community/medieval/images/b3.jpg
The map looks nice. Just as strategic as the Shogun map in terms of choke points because of its length. I don't like the way the Medieval map is set up where conquering a province means one more to defend most of the time. Constantinople is about the only strategic province in terms of location in the entire map.
As I've suggested in another thread, I think they need to put in another 10 or more areas.

at last a true sequel to Shogun, with vikings too http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif i'll be probably playing the vikings, scots, picts then saxons.
Sadly the Vikings have horns on their helmets... They didn't have that
The map is very nice We can again get those battles in a certain province over and over again because it is the only way in or out. Good or bad, deside yourself.
I think I will first play Vikings then Picts, Scots, Saxons. But only the Vikings have sure firstplace, though they seem easy to play with no need for ports and their raiding.

The map may be nice but thats basically the whole campaign map your looking at there...

cool so it's vikings versus dark ages residents of the British Isles then? (that would be the politically correct, non-faction specific term...)
can't wait vikings versus the estuary boys - oh yes
oi - you looking at my longboat?
Taken from CA's website....
Three new playable factions - the Aragonese, the Sicilians and the Hungarians.
New units for many factions, including elite Arabic Faris cavalrymen, Russian Druhzina Cavalry, Hungary Jobbagy Infantry, and the fearsome, amazing Organ Gun - a Medieval “machine gun” of sorts

Quote[/b] (PSYCHO @ Jan. 09 2003,01:17)]As I've suggested in another thread, I think they need to put in another 10 or more areas.
On the MTW:VI page it states that the campaign map is going to consist of the British Isles and Scandinavia. I would assume this means Sweden, Norway and Denmark at a minimum, probably broken down into smaller provinces as with Britain, so that should easily add at least 10 more provinces.
well if you look closely at that map, in the top right hand corner, you can see some land... now that is too high to be denmark, so i assume its norway...
as far as expansion packs go, it is highly possible for there to be 2-3 for M:TW, includeing a Crusader pack focused on the crusader lands, and even a map based neaer where the mongols invaded, covering from hungury to the steppe plains, and the nomadic peoples there... lots and lots of options to mine more ideas from
Theodoret

I hope the Vikings lose their horns before the expansion pack is released. For a game which claims a degree of historical accuracy that really is very bad.
The map of England looks nice, can't wait to lead the Angles of Northhumbria to victory.

I count about 31 provinces on this map, Scandinavia will also be included so I would estimate 45 provinces. I think that`s enough for an expansion. Don`t forget 11 new factions
Call me an ignorant but I really don`t care much if the vikings have horns.

I find myself sumwhat stimped here, since the expansion takes place before the now scottish flag came about wat flag do they have in the expansion from looking at the screen shots i think the little shirtless dudes with spears r the scotts.
hmmm see i told u the scotts r hard as nails we go into battle cammando......

Regarding these shirtless dudes.... Imagine to be those in winter time. I sincerely hope it will be season based and not year based. Mainly because of the small province areas, I'd hate if it took a year to march from southjytland to northjytland (bout a 2 weeks it might take).
And I agree with Kraxis and Theodoret that it is a pitty the vikings indeed have horns on their helmets...
I guess better marketing if the front of the case shows a REAL viking with HORNS http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

I think they are pretty generic as at leas one more faction has them, the bown guys, the Picts I think... hehehe
anybody know what an organ gun is?
Why shouldn´t some of the vikings have had hornet on their helmets? Even on the picture only 2 of 12 have hornets.
And I really liked the look of those Huscarls in Age of Empires 2, even if that wasn´t realistic. Perhaps they will look a little bit like that in viking invasion.
Quote[/b] (Husar @ Jan. 09 2003,13:53)]Why shouldn´t some of the vikings have had hornet on their helmets?
There are two reasons for this.
Firstly, the helmet as the ones the vikings used and most others up until the buckethelmet, did not have padding and was thus designed to let the blow against the head glance off its intended target. The horns would catch the sword/axe/whatever and would not let the blow glance off. In many cases the weapon might even go directly down into the skull.
Secondly, in the cases where the weapon does not go down, it would blow the helmet off because it was caught by the horn.
Oh yeah, Knight_Yellow, the Scottish banner is lightblue with a withe circle and a thick on the ends cross over that. A simple yet quite nice banner. The viking banner is almost in inverted version of the peacedove... BAH
Give me a dragon
I didnt see any horns on the units at the pictures.

As said the little shirtless guys r in two factions the blue (scottish i think) and the brown (picts i think).
but heres my problem the scottish were the damned Picts.
or is that to simulate diff clans or sumthing???
so am i getting the chance to play more than one scottish faction or have CA not done their homework?

In reply to mav3434 -
An organ gun is a sort of cannon consisting of many small barrels and used as an anti-personnel weapon. It is called an Organ Gun because the barrels look like the pipes of an organ. Usually the barrels could be fired separately or as a single salvo. It was a 15th century thing, Leonardo da Vinci drew pictures of huge organ guns but he was probably just trying to compensate for something.

This is a pre-MTW rendering of an organ gun. It is most likely what the one in the game will look like.

Grapeshot? They certainly had it by 1512 because I was reading a paper on an archeological dig around one of Henry VIII of England's naval bases. They used canister shot consisting of pieces of flint (very nasty) as well. I imagine it probably was around in the late 15th century. Not sure whether it was used before 1453 though.

The Picts originally lived in Scotland. Then in about the 8th century the Scotts invaded from Ireland and conquered Scotland.
thanks for the organ gun info and picture. I tried to look it up on google and I got about a thousand hits about Warhammer Dwarf Organ Guns or something like that.

Anyone know if there will be more non-playable factions?
My hopes include: Lithuania, Bohemia, Serbia, Moldavia-Wallachia, the Kipchaqs, the Timurids to invade around 1390 like the Golden Horde event, so we can play the battle of Ankara, I`d also make the Templars, Hospitalers and TEutonic knights independant factions as they were historically.
My hopes for new units: War Wagons, Field fortifications, War elephants (the Timur used them at Ankara), lithuanian light cavalry (lance throwing cavalry), give the Polish another UU like the ``Chivalric Polish Retainer``

I'm wondering why anyone sane would want to play the Aragonese -- or as I like to call them, the pink pansies.
Why the hell can't we play as the Golden Horde?
Other than that, thumbs up CA, I like the looks of it.

ah geese, the Viking unit looks the same from the ones in MTW I hope they change that (even if it has to have horns) But all the rest sounds great. I'm glad they're giving the Russians and the Hungarians new units. I was tired of being the Russians and only having the Boyars and Halberdiers as the only decent units
Just onequesion, what are Saxon Fyrdmen? I'de like to know, since I plan on driving those dirty Laplanders out of me isles http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif
*sigh* Emp...
I have answered this about four times in all now.
But here goes.
The Fyrd were peasants called in for military service in times of crisis such as when William invaded England, they were the guys that stood firmly on the sides of Harold Housecarles. They were peasants but had some training and they were armed to a degree and they were only raised when it was really bad, so they would have a fairly good Morale I guess.
You can draw quite a few parallels to the Spearmen we have now.
You can already download an all faction mod from the MTW section. Ordas Horde is a choice too. Orda Horde offers 3 extra sets of EarlyHighLate campaigns. Those can remain available once installed. 1 set consists the CA EHL campaigns, but all factions in those campaigns are playable; Mongols in Late.
The other set is the same as the previous, but Mongols are also playable in Early and High (you'll need the OH unitstat to play those, since they use 'new' units. Stat supplied with file).
The third set simply enables all 20 factions: Sicily, Aragon, Papist, Swiss, Hungary, Mongol Horde, Burgundy and Novgorod (also online). Some factions will be very hard to play, since I didn't intend that set to be SP. It's not unlikely that you'll find Novgorod in the Sahara :-).
You can also choose to install Mongol music and orders.
http://www.totalwar.org/Downloads/Mtw_Uploads/MTWupload/OrdaHorde2.zip
It includes an undo batfile in case you don't like it at all.

Iceland.... Hmmm, no not yet, it wasn't really a factor until about the turn of the mellenium and there never lived many peope up there (though the massive vulcano eruption in the 1200's really set the country back).
At least Iceland shouldn't be part of the Viking dominion at first, maybe a free for all province that really isn't worth much. But the game start at a time when exploration went east rather than west.

There were Irish monks arlready on Iceland. Monastery raiding anyone?
Yeah, but that was not the reason for the vikings going there... they went on exploration and stumbled onto the monks, they raided them and enslaved them, then they settled their lands. All in a good day as a viking. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/cool.gif
Monk don't count as military forces, so it would still be a province without any troops.
But then again, why bother with Iceland as it is most likely not going to be in the game.

when they a map of the British isles, parts of Scandinavia and Northern Europe, does this include Normandy? They should make the Normans a faction.
A small wish list for VTW http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif
1)Add at least another 5-10 areas to the Strategy map.
Will reduce the bottleneck on British Isle.
Add to the 'local fighting' feel of the period.
Prevent little factions disappearing within a few turns.
Add to the challenge and longevity.
2)Get rid of the bright coloured peasants.
Excusable for the medieval period, totally inappropriate for Dark ages. Would prefer peasants to be duller across the board.
3) Develop authentic sprites for Highlanders, Vikings, and Kerns etc.
Currently too many units look the same as peasants with different weapons. These units are distinct enough to warrant special attention.
4) Have each faction faithfully represented in sound.
Have the Saxons speak Saxon in a Germanic tongue.
Vikings in a Norse tongue.
Britains in a Welsh tongue etc etc.
Would have been good to have French speaking Latin with a French accent etc in MTW.
Cheers

a couple good shows on vikings on the TLC channel tonight. sorry, a bit late, i'm watching the second one now, but it'll prolly be repeated later on.
first show goes into the explorations of the vikings all the way to north america while the second one is concentrating on vikings in england and ireland. quite informative.
