Does anybody know a good method for killing horse archers. They are fast and ranged, so how do I do it. They make me so mad.
Any tips?
Use light cavalry. Hobilars and the like, with a ratio of about 1 and 1/2 units of these per unit of enemy horsearchers.

Use your foot archers. In a shooting duel foot archers should win every time.

what i do is make traps , use 3 foot units in very long formation to form a sort of a wide trap , then use horse units to lead the horse archers ( who will just run against the horse units) to the trap . if you do it properly it works really well and once the trap closes there will be quite a lot of dead horse archers lying around

They really are a pain in the ass if you have a largely infantry based army (as I usually do). Even mounted knights have a tough time catching up with them. As mentioned above, light fast cavalry will do the trick nicely, try to keep them on high ground and then when the horse archers get close enough charge like mad (preferably downhill for speed) and slaughter them Otherwise something longer ranged like longbows or foot archers on higher ground will work.
sned in 2 light cav units down either side of them and squish them in the middle, thier skirmish mode has fits sometimes

Arbs are quiet effective against them. Another trick is bringing a unit of fast cav around them in a wide range, then let them charge from the rear and the horse archers will evade right into your inf.

Trebizoid archers from the front, Kataphraktoi from the rear.
That should do it. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

gaius by the time the cataphraktoi make the encircling move to go behind the archers , the archers will be long gone and would claim quite a lot of lives. you gotta use faster cavalry than that http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

rasoforos, you do have a good point there.
I guess Alan Mercenary Cavalry would be better.
Although, if close enough, Kats. have a better charge, and defence bonus. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

I find it best to ignore them in later stages of the game as once you have enough armoured troops with upgrades they do little damage and while I think your ideas are sensible for getting rid of them you don't want to waste too much time chasing them around the map as this is what the enemy wants you to do. Send too many units chasing after them and the rest of his army comes up and smacks you.
I think they are annoying more than dangerous generally and have never lost a battle (only play SP) due to horse archers (lost for plenty other reasons though!http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif.

Horse Archers are like basic Archers, not nearly as effective as some of the availble faction-specific units, i.e., Byzintine Cavalry. I treat horse archers much the same as foor archers- an annoyance. If I can engage them, I will, but I usually won't go out of my way to entrap them with multiple units. As fun as that can be. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif
